“When we were making ‘Pretty in Pink,’” McCarthy says during the special, “John Hughes used to come to the set with a cassette recorder. And he’d have these little cassettes that he would just play. ‘Hey, guys, what do you think of this?’ And he did play. And he’d just play snippets of these songs. And we’d either give it a thumbs up or thumbs down. And a lot of those...

Dave Sirulnick spent nearly three decades at MTV, helping launch the signature “Week in Rock” news franchise and overseeing “Total Request Live” — as well as reality series including “Laguna Beach,” “Cribs” and “My Super Sweet 16.” He spearheaded MTV’s Video Music Awards, as well as its ground-breaking “Choose or Lose” presidential campaign coverage and news programming stemming from world events such as Hurricane Katrina, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 2003 war in Iraq. Sirulnick rose to executive vice president for multiplatform production, news and music for MTV before departing in 2015 as part of a major Viacom reorg. With the news that Paramount Global has eliminated the last vestiges of MTV News (which had already been significantly downsized), Variety asked Sirulnick — now president of entertainment at RadicalMedia — to share his thoughts.

Let’s take a trip back in time to the early 1980s at the height of David Bowie’s popularity.
MTV launched in 1981 with the words, “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The first video played was The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Quite appropriate.
MTV stands for music television because that’s what it was. MTV played music videos all day, every day — 24 hours of videos.
The network brought artists into our homes for the first time. We no longer just listened to the music; we watched it. This helped launch some of the biggest names in music of the time. It turned artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Boy George, and Duran Duran into stars.
David Bowie had some of his biggest commercial successes during this time, partially because of MTV.

“Spinning Gold” director Timothy Scott Bogart will tell the story behind MTV through his new production company.
Hot on the heels of the Cannes market launch of “Spinning Gold,” the story of Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart, the director has unveiled Hero Partners, a partnership with producing partner Jessica Martins of Hero Entertainment, and “Spinning Gold” producer and financier Chris Torto.
Dedicated to streamlining independent film financing, the new venture will fully finance four to five films per year, providing a one-stop shop to finance and produce a slate of music-driven projects across film, television and theater (Broadway).
Torto has assembled an initial feature film production fund of 100 million, highlighted by a slate of original pop musicals, including “Marian,” a period film set to modern music that tells the true story behind Robin Hood. Production begins in Italy in November with Bogart at the helm and Martins and Torto producing.

After the stunning news of David Bowie’s death, people all over the world tearfully dug out their old Bowie records and re-lived the countless amazing moments from his five-decade career. One of the most interesting clips to emerge comes from MTV, who posted this interview that Bowie did in 1983 with original VJ Mark Goodman – even though it doesn’t paint the network in a very flattering light. While promoting Let’s Dance, Bowie takes the then two-year-old network to task for playing virtually no videos by black artists. “Having watched...
