Dean Bakopoulos is an American novelist and screenwriter. The son of immigrants from Greece and Ukraine, Bakopoulos grew up in the Detroit area and attended the University of Michigan and later, received an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His novels include the New York Times Notable Book "Please Don't Come Back from the Moon" (2005), the award-winning "My American Unhappiness" (2011), and the indie bookstore besteller Summerlong (2015), which he is adapting into a feature film. He is the screenwriter of the critically acclaimed film "Don't Come Back from the Moon," as well as the co-creator and executive producer of "Made for Love," an HBO MAX original series. He has sold pilots to Lionsgate, Anonymous Content Studios, and WIIP in recent years. He is now an associate professor of cinematic arts at the University of Iowa; in 2024 will become director of the University's newly-established screenwriters' workshop. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction (2009) and NEA fellowships in fiction (2006) and creative nonfiction (2016), Bakopoulos divides his time between Los Angeles and Iowa City.
