Jon Turtletaub’s The Meg was frustratingly dour and straight-faced for a film that pit Jason Statham’s rescue diver Jonas Taylor and a bunch of research scientists against a prehistoric megashark. And for its first hour, Ben Wheatley’s Meg 2: The Trench is also a derivative and listless affair, feebly drawing influence from the likes of Alien, Jaws, and The Abyss but never coming close to approximating their mood of tension and horror.
Meg 2 finds Jonas now working as an eco-warrior alongside engineer buddies Mac (Cliff Curtis) and DJ (Page Kennedy) and a few other scientists. Again venturing into “the trench”—the deepest part of the ocean where megalodons, or megs, in the world of the film still flourish—Jonas and his team encounter an illegal mining operation and eventually find themselves trapped and forced to take extreme measures to escape. This underlit stretch of Wheatley’s film...

The world has changed a lot since “Black Mirror” premiered in 2011; mostly as the lines between fact and fiction blur. The sci-fi show from Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones became shorthand for our bleakest and most dystopic realities, whether that was a caricature rising to the highest office in the nation, technology used to monitor and manipulate human behavior, or alternate realities and artificial intelligence.
With Season 6 now on Netflix — its prescience and potency somewhat in question — IndieWire had to revisit the existing episodes and our previous ranking. Comparing installments of an anthology series like this one is inherently tricky, even if there is a certain “We’re all doomed” throughline present in most..
Arranging the episodes by quality also doesn’t guarantee the ideal viewing order, but IndieWire’s list naturally punctures defeatism with hope. We don’t recommend binge-viewing, but if you want to journey back through “Black Mirror,...

Julie Walters (National Treasure) and Clarke Peters (The Wire) are fronting a dark, irreverent drama based around a death pact for broadcaster Channel 4.
They will star in Clerkenwell Films’ six-part Truelove, which is written by from Iain Weatherby (Humans) and co-created with Charlie Covell. She wrote the tonally similar Channel 4 and Netflix drama The End Of The F***ing World — another Clerkenwell production.
With a core cast in their 60s and 70s, Channel 4 says the series “breaks the rules for older characters on screen and flips ageist tropes on their head in a series which promises thrilling twists and turns, irreverent humour and passionate romance.”
Walter will play Phil, an ex-senior police chief enjoying a comfortable if boring retirement, and Peters plays Ken, a divorcee and ex-special forces vet who feels similarly at sea. The pair are childhood sweetheart who never quite managed to forget each other.

“Penance is very aware of Amalia’s past and her mission as a whole and believes and trusts in Amalia,” HBO star tells TheWrap
(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Sunday’s “The Nevers.”)
At the end of this week’s episode of HBO’s “The Nevers,” the never-emotional Amalia True (Laura Donnelly) breaks down in tears in front of her best friend, Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), Harriet (Kiran Sonia Sawar), Myrtle (Viola Prettejohn) and the other Touched women as they read out the message they deciphered from the late Mary’s (Eleanor Tomlinson) final song.
But Amalia does not become affected by the message, which starts with, “You’re not alone,” until Harriet reveals that it was specifically directed at Amalia.
“‘Amalia, my lonely soldier,’ something about wearing stripes. But she said, ‘I didn’t leave you. I went inside the city. I was damaged, incomplete. I had to heal.

“The Nevers,” Joss Whedon’s steampunk brainchild and HBO’s latest original series, drew over 1.4 million viewers across linear telecasts and digital during its premiere on Sunday night. The show scored the best debut for a new original series on HBO Max and surpassed viewership for other popular shows on the streamer, including Misha Green’s horror drama “Lovecraft Country” and David E. Kelley’s psychological thriller “The Undoing.” This preliminary number will likely increase significantly as viewing across HBO’s platforms and additional telecasts are factored in.

It takes a minute for “The Nevers” to feel like something other than a steampunk “Doctor Who” interlude in Victorian London where, despite stubbornly buttoned-up appearances, things aren’t quite as they seem. The new HBO drama, which follows a group of women who have been “touched” by some mysterious power that grants them extraordinary abilities, unabashedly embraces its cross-section of genres. It’s a historical drama awash in lush costuming and production design. It’s a sci-fi epic unraveling the mysteries of the universe. It’s a screwball comedy and Harlequin romance starring quick-witted heroines, surly detectives and devastatingly handsome heirs. Even when it errs towards the silly, it’s fun and twisty enough to be an engaging page-turner of a show that should grow its own fanbase without much trouble.

Joss Whedon is exiting his HBO series “The Nevers,” Variety has confirmed.
An HBO spokesperson said the show is still scheduled to premiere next summer. Whedon was the creative force behind the show, and was set to serve as writer, director, executive producer, and showrunner.

Throughout “Pure,” Marnie keeps telling herself there’s something wrong with her. Regardless of the situation — a family gathering, a crowded Tube car, or alone in her rented walk-in closet — certain thoughts keep winding their way into her consciousness.
Even though “Pure” chooses an effective way to show how Marnie (played by Charly Clive) is beset by her own imagination — subliminal flashes of face-licking, wayward fingers, and strangers in throes — it’s a compelling series just as much for the rest of her story. In showing one woman’s tumultuous first few weeks in a new city, “Pure” is a solid case study in how to build a show from scratch.
The audience gets dropped in right in from the outset, starting with Marnie (a relatively recent college grad) already midway through an excursion to distance herself from the small Scottish town. After a disastrous anniversary for her parents — her...

The trailer, which can be seen below, ranges from futuristic sets with robots and spaceships to more mundane settings. According to EW, at an early PaleyFest screening of “USS Callister,” creator Charlie Brooker revealed that the episode was conceived as an adult “Toy Story” and it’s about “living under a tyrant.” Its obvious riff on “Star Trek” means that it’s grander in scope and uses a healthy amount of lens flares.

On the heels of one Season 4 trailer for Black Mirror, we get another! That's no big deal, of course, considering each episode is a stand-alone product, but I do have one issue. Netflix is teasing the hell out of Season 4...but offering no release date as to when we can expect to see it! What the hell guys?! Do you just want to torture us? I need my sweet sci-fi stories that make me feel uncomfortable for days following!
Check out the trailer for Crocodile below, and once again be frightened with the future we could one day live in.
Crocodile was directed by John Hillcoat (The Road, Lawless) and stars Andrea Riseborough (Birdman, Bloodline), Andrew Gower (Outlander), and Kiran Sonia Sawar (Murdered By My Father).

With each season of “Black Mirror,” Charlie Brooker‘s anthology show has only grown more ambitious, attracting bigger names and bigger budgets. Now, with a new home on Netflix, the series which takes a skewed look at the future can attempt even greater feats of storytelling.
The streaming service continues with their episode-by-episode trailer for season 4, with a new look landing for “Crocodile.” The episode comes from director John Hillcoat (“The Proposition,” “The Road,” “Triple 9“), stars Andrea Riseborough, Andrew Gower, and Kiran Sonia Sawar, and as for the story, it involves delving into memories to find out the truth behind an accident.

“Black Mirror” continues to whet our appetite for its new batch of episodes with the new trailer for “Crocodile,” starring Andrea Riseborough (“Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”) and directed by John Hillcoat.
The official description involves a dark secret in Mia’s (Riseborough) past that comes back to haunt her. The episode, filmed in Iceland, also features what Netflix calls “a new device that can access your raw impressions of events.”
Because it’s “Black Mirror,” we, of course, know to expect a few more twists than what that premise promises. But all the classic elements of the series created by Charlie Brooker seem to be here: complicated human beings, whose lives get even more complicated by technology— though “Crocodile” does offer the added bonus of Iceland’s dramatically beautiful landscapes.

‘Black Mirror‘ is a show that I absolutely love. In what is the closest thing to a modern day ‘Twilight Zone‘, creator/show runner Charlie Booker‘s hypnotic series has managed to captivate audiences in it’s first three seasons. The show – which was originally aired on BBC – was expanded to a six episode format after Netflix picked up the show for it’s third, and now fourth season, and is highly anticipated to say the least.
Season 3 was backed by some incredible talent, and based on the trailer for season 4, this trend seems to be continuing. In particular, this upcoming season provides a hefty dose of talent in the director’s chair that includes: Jodie Foster, John Hillcoat (The Road, Lawless), David Slade (Hannibal), Colm McCarthy(Peaky Blinders) and Toby Haynes (Dr Who), Tim Van Patten(The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire).

Six new realities await.
Netflix has today unveiled the freaky first teaser for Black Mirror season 4, along with the stellar cast list and official episode titles. In keeping with the show’s knack for puzzles and confounding, reality-altering mystery, the trailer above is a super-sleek and fairly ominous peek at those “six new stories,” all of which come from the mind of series creator and showrunner, Charlie Brooker.
Remaining behind the scenes for the time being, today also brings confirmation that Jodie Foster directed season 4’s pilot episode, “Arkangel,” with Toby Haynes (Sherlock), John Hillcoat (Triple 9) and David Slade (Hannibal) also receiving credits. Casting-wise, Black Mirror has added the likes of Jesse Plemons (Fargo), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) and Rosemarie Dewitt (La La Land) to its ranks, and the first-look teaser shows Netflix’s dark, prescient anthology series venturing into full-blown sci-fi territory.
