John Williams “has made a gigantic contribution to the world of music at large, beginning with making film music legitimate but also his concert work.” For our recent webchat, director and producer Laurent Bouzereau makes that claim about the subject of his new documentary “Music by John Williams,” which now streaming on Disney+. In fact, Bouzereau ranks Williams as the #1 composer of the 20th century, ahead of Gershwin, McCartney/Lennon and Simon, adding, “My argument is that there are very few people” (especially who started in the 1960s and 1970s) who “have survived the test of time.”
He admits that he’s “been preparing for this my entire life” by watching the films of Steven Spielberg with the scores by maestro Williams. He adds that it’s “an honor to be the one who tells this story, because I’m not the first one to approach John. He said ‘no’ many times,...

Danny DeVito is revealing he has plans to reunite with his Matilda co-star Mara Wilson for a concert event that would see them narrating the 1996 film.
“Mara and I were planning to perform Matilda live with the New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra just before the strike hit,” DeVito told The Messenger about the reunion that was postponed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. “We had it all set, but, after the strike hit, we couldn’t proceed because it would be seen as a promotion for a movie.”
He continued, “However, we’re still planning to do that. We’re going to watch the movie with David Newman’s score and try to do it sometime soon, as it seems the strike may be coming to an end — I hope!”

John Williams turns 90 years old on Feb. 8. And the world’s most famous film composer shows no signs of slowing down.
The five-time Oscar winner, creator of many of the most well-known movie themes of all time — everything from “Jaws” and “Star Wars” to “E.T.” and “Harry Potter” — is finishing work on two new film scores and, Covid permitting, plans to conduct concerts with at least five orchestras between April and November.
Commemorating Williams’ nonagenarian status is the release of “John Williams: The Berlin Concert,” a two-disc Deutsche Grammophon set recorded during the composer’s Oct. 14-16 concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic.
The 93-minute collection includes many of Williams’ familiar signature tunes — “Star Wars,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Jurassic Park,” “Superman” — plus a few less familiar pieces, including his theme for “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and his moving, non-film “Elegy for Cello and Orchestra.”

For the acclaimed sound team behind Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” – including frequent Spielberg collaborators and Oscar winners like supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer Gary Rydstrom, re-recording mixer Andy Nelson, and scoring mixer Shawn Murphy, all of whom were recently nominated by the Cinema Audio Society for their work in the film – the challenges of creating the musical were vast. The group, which also included production mixer Tod A. Maitland, had to not only make the transitions between dialogue and song sound uniform but account for numerous musical numbers large and small. But while sequences such as the show-stopping “America” had challenges, it was Rita Moreno’s emotional take on “Somewhere” that proved to be the biggest high-wire act.

It's almost as if destiny brought composer David Newman to Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story." Newman, who composed "Anastasia," "Galaxy Quest," and Danny DeVito's films, first worked on "West Side Story" as a teenager. Since then, the Broadway show and the 1961 film adaptation have been a major part of his career and life. When the time came to work on Spielberg's film as a music producer and score arranger, he was more than ready for the mammoth task.
During a wide-ranging interview about the film, Newman proved himself as a real Bernstein and "West Side Story" historian. Newman's passion for the show, as well...

This article marks Part 1 of the Gold Derby series reflecting on films that contended for the Big Five Oscars – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay (Original or Adapted). With “A Star Is Born” this year on the cusp of joining this exclusive group of Oscar favorites, join us as we look back at the 43 extraordinary pictures that earned Academy Awards nominations in each of the Big Five categories beginning with the eight that were shut out of these top races.
At the 31st Academy Awards ceremony, “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1958) was well-positioned for Oscar glory. Critically acclaimed and commercially successful, the film adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play was up in six categories, including the Big Five, plus Best Cinematography.

There are lots of casting possibilities out there that didn't happen for one reason or another, but there are few more bizarre than these. Try and picture this: Michael Jackson as James Bond! Or how about Muhammad Ali as Superman? Maybe not as quite as bizarre, but certainly odd, was also the idea of Burt Reynolds donning the blue and red outfit of the Man of Steel. Each of them are actually much more than just rumors. The late Michael definitely saw himself as a sort of badass character, which you can see based on his music video for "Bad" and his adventures as Captain Eo. That short film of the same name, written by Star Wars creator George Lucas and directed by The Godfather's Francis Ford Coppola, was shown at Disney theme parks for a decade beginning in 1986. But this was nothing compared to the singer's ambition to be cast as James Bond,...

Theatrically released in the summer of 2017, Andrew Cohn’s heart-rending documentary “Night School” is a compassionately observed account of the onerous ordeal a group of underprivileged adults in Indianapolis weathers to obtain their GEDs. Cohn’s film is a stirring demonstration of the power of second chances.
