Mark Essex was killed in the heat of the shootout on January 7, 1973, after an 11-hour rampage. He was on the roof of the 18th floor in the Howard Johnson hotel when he got circled by a helicopter and some snipers. Trying to put up a final fight, bullets were rained down on Mark and according to reports a total of 200 bullet wounds were discovered on his dead body.
