Exclusive: Iconic Events has taken domestic rights to The Prank, a dark comedy starring Egot winner Rita Moreno (West Side Story), Connor Kalopsis (Outmatched) and Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever), from Xrm Media and Sneak Preview Entertainment.

Directed by Maureen Bharoocha (Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin), the SXSW 2022 crowd pleaser will hit approximately 200 screens on March 15. Myriad Pictures is selling international rights at EFM.

Sung Kang, who is best known for playing the fan favorite role of Han in the Fast and Furious franchise, has made his feature directorial debut with the ’90s-set creature feature Shaky Shivers, which landed a North American distribution deal with Cinedigm. They teamed up with Fathom Events to bring the movie to theatres for one night last month, and now it has been announced (via our friends at Bloody Disgusting) that Shaky Shivers will be receiving a digital release on October 17th. The digital version can be pre-ordered on Amazon. The movie will also be streaming on the Screambox service.

Exclusive: Moviegoers who catch Alex Winter’s new documentary The YouTube Effect can expect a cinematic bonus: We can reveal the film is preceded by a short documentary for the National Courtwatch Network narrated by Fiona Apple, with original music by the singer-songwriter.

The four-and-a-half minute long short, which also features narration from actor Jesse Williams and Dr. Carmen Johnson of Courtwatch PG, examines a growing movement to bring accountability to the judicial system by training court watchers to observe judicial proceedings “and report their findings to the public.”

The movement picked up steam during the pandemic when many court proceedings were made available online, allowing Courtwatch volunteers around the country to monitor arraignments, bond hearings and other judicial matters that might otherwise go unwitnessed by members of the public.

Really exciting news out of the ongoing Cannes market as Cinedigm has acquired all North American rights to the 80s-inspired horror comedy Shaky Shivers, from director Sung Kang, known for reprising his role as Han in this weekend’s Fast X.

“32 Sounds,” an immersive and experiential documentary, has sold North American rights to Abramorama following its premiere at Sundance Film Festival.

The movie, which explores the phenomenon of sound through 32 specific sonic experiences, will begin its nationwide theatrical rollout at New York City’s Film Forum on April 28.

To complete the unique auditory experience, several venues, including Film Forum, will offer audience members individual sets of headphones so they can watch “32 Sounds” the way the filmmaker intended.

“32 Sounds” had its world premiere at Sundance, where it played to positive reviews. Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge wrote that the movie is “bursting with humor, emotion and curiosity” and praised it as a “rare and rewarding sonic journey with the potential to enrich our lives.”

Sundance revealed the lineup for its Shorts and Indie Episodic programs today, featuring new work from filmmakers like Paul Feig and Ken Marino, “Roma” star Yalitza Aparicio Martinez, and Henry Winkler.

Sixty-four films were selected for the Shorts program from a record-high pool of 10,981 submissions. Spanning fiction, non-fiction, and animated works from artists in the U.S. and around the world, the program features both new and returning filmmakers. Aparicio Martinez will headline Mexico’s “Sweatshop Girl,” from writer-director Selma Cervantes, playing a seamstress who must hide her pregnancy to avoid getting fired. The Feig-produced “Help Me Understand” stars “The Office” actress Kate Flannery and Ken Marino among its ensemble cast. Angela Trimbur wrote and co-stars in “Mirror Girl,” while Sarafyan appears in the sci-fi short “Power Signal.”

Exclusive: Egot winner Rita Moreno has been cast in a starring role in the feature film The Prank, to be directed by Maureen Bharoocha (Golden Arm), opposite Connor Kalopsis and Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever). Filming begins this month in and around Los Angeles.

The Prank follows two high school students who play a prank on their physics teacher, Mrs. Wheeler, played by Moreno. When she fails them on a test; they teach the imperious, demanding, insulting instructor a lesson by falsely accusing her of the murder of a missing student.

Other cast in The Prank includes Keith David, Meredith Salenger, Jonathan Kimmel, Nathan Janak and Kate Flannery.

The dark comedy is written by Rebecca Flinn-White & Zak White. Bharoocha was recently named IndieWire’s Rising Female Directors of 2020, was on HBO’s 2018 Director’s List, and was nominated for the SXSW 2020 Adam Yauch Hörnblowér Visionary Directing Award.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired the North American distribution rights to “Paper Tiger,” written and directed by Paul Kowalski. The drama/thriller film will be released on VOD/digital on Aug. 24.

Starring Lydia Look, Alan Trong and Elaine Kao, “Paper Tiger” follows an immigrant mother who fears her mentally-ill teenaged son is turning into a school shooter. The movie first debuted at Austin Film Festival in 2020 and won the audience award and a jury mention.

Seth Numrich, John Harlan Kim, Carrie Wampler and Lynn Chen round out the cast. “Paper Tiger” is produced by Pin-Chun Liu and Kowalski, alongside Bonnie Buckner and executive producer Michael Y. Chow for Xrm Media.

“In a time of growing isolation, polarization and mental health concerns around the world, I hope the film reaches audiences that can connect with and explore the type of tragedy that can result when communication shuts down,” Kowalski said.

The International Documentary Association (IDA) and Xrm Media have launched a new international fund to support short verité documentaries with an emphasis on emerging filmmakers.

The IDA+Xrm Media Incubator will provide three filmmakers with $25,000 each. In addition, Academy Award-nominated directors Skye Fitzgerald (“Hunger Ward”) and Smriti Mundhra (“St. Louis Superman”), and Emmy-nominated director Nadia Hallgren (“Becoming”) will be paired with the grantees as mentors.

Applications will open July 5 and close Aug. 2.

The Sundance Institute will establish an Asia outpost of the Sundance Film Festival whose first iteration is set to take place in-person in Jakarta, Indonesia this summer, it announced Thursday.

Sundance Film Festival: Asia will seek to “support, connect, promote and celebrate” Asia’s independent film community, as well as showcase a number of 2021 Sundance festival films in the Indonesian capital. It will be set up by the Institute in collaboration with Burbank-headquartered American media technology firm Xrm Media, and with support from Idn Media, an Indonesian media platform with more than 60 million monthly active users.

“We have long wanted to deepen our connection to the bold and vibrant energy of Asian independent filmmaking,” said Sundance Film Festival director Tabitha Jackson.

2021’s edition will take place in Jakarta with support from Idn Media, Indonesia’s leading media platform company. Other Asian cities will be explored for future editions.

Sundance Film Festival is coming to Asia in 2021. The Park City event will launch a new offshoot in Indonesian capital Jakarta in late summer, showcasing a selection of titles from this year’s fest in Utah.

Sundance is teaming with local outfit Xrm Media on the launch. A delegation of filmmakers will travel to the Indonesian city – travel and public health allowing – while there will also be Sundance Lab initiatives held for Asian talent in collaboration with Xrm.

The TV Academy unveiled the winners of its juried awards on Friday, with “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj” and “Love, Death & Robots” among the winners.

The awards — which cover categories from animation, choreography, interactive programming and motion design — will be presented across the two nights of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies next month.

The Emmys’ juried categories are evaluated separately from the rest of the awards, and require all entrants to be screened by a panel of professionals in the appropriate peer group. There are no nominees, and any given juried category may result in one, zero or multiple winners.
