The movement picked up steam during the pandemic when many court proceedings were made available online, allowing Courtwatch volunteers around the country to monitor arraignments, bond hearings and other judicial matters that might otherwise go unwitnessed by members of the public.

Rebecca Hall’s directorial debut already made a big splash with its Sundance Film Festival premiere — and the film is set to make even bigger noise, as Netflix is nearing a $16 million deal for worldwide distribution rights on the film, an individual with knowledge of the deal tells Variety.
Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga star in the project, based on the 1929 novella by Nella Larsen and adapted by Hall, about racial passing in 1920s New York.
“Passing” was one of the buzziest titles heading into the festival, with Endeavor Content handling sales for the picture. The film boasts a starry cast and, after its well-reviewed premiere, a sizable acquisition deal was to be expected.
Set amid the Harlem Renaissance, Irene (Thompson) and Clare (Negga) are two mixed race women, and childhood friends, who reunite in their adulthood, discovering that they now live on two different sides of the color line,...

When Nina Yang Bongiovi founded Significant Prods. with Forest Whitaker in 2009, her optimism about the opportunities that would come from starting a production company with an Oscar-winner was quickly challenged. “I was so overly positive because I didn’t realize how color takes such a precedent in the business,” she said.
But things turned rosier when they produced Ryan Coogler’s 2013 “Fruitvale Station,” which grossed $17.4 million on a $900,000 budget. “It was a shock to us,” Bongiovi said. “Getting that film made was practically impossible because of all the biases against it. Once it proved it could be successful, we realized there’s something deeply sustainable here.”
This week, she announced the launch of a multicultural film fund rooted in that ethos. Aum Group is a joint venture between Bongiovi, Gold House chairman Bing Chen, Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, Xrm Media’s Michael Y. Chow, Mnm Creative’s Michael K. Shen,...

Netflix is taking the early lead at this year’s Emmys race, with six wins, thanks to the Television Academy’s juried award winners for animation, choreography, interactive programming and motion design, which were announced on Friday.
The outstanding individual achievement in animation category, a “juried” prize that means several, one or no winners could be named, wound up with eight honorees this year: Five from Netflix and three from YouTube.
Also landing its first-ever Emmy was Twitch, the live streaming platform popular in the gaming community and owned by Amazon. Twitch landed an Emmy for outstanding innovation in interactive media, for “Artificial.”

Choreographer Kathryn Burns won the award, making it her second Emmy.
