Vera Cherny was born Vera Chernysheva in the former Soviet Union. Because of her father's profession, the family moved a lot. The first time they relocated, Vera was 2 months old and her parents carried her onto a military truck in an open suitcase instead of a bassinet.
Vera began performing at 3 years old at a local ballet school in Altengrabow, in the former East Germany. At 16, she immigrated to the United States on her own. She continued her undergraduate and graduate studies in the U.S., while acting in regional theatre productions. She graduated with an M.F.A. in Acting from the Actors Studio Drama School in New York City.
Vera has recurring guest star credits on "The Americans" (FX, Seasons 3-6); "StartUp" (Sony / Crackle, Seasons 1-2); "Counterpart" (Starz, Season 2), "Queen of the South" (USA, Seasons 4-5) and "For All Mankind" (Sony / Apple TV+, Seasons 3-4). Her other credits include "Grey's Anatomy" (ABC) and "Magnum P.I." (CBS).
In 2020, Vera wrote and produced an LGBTQ short film "Once Was". Over 95% of the production's behind-the-camera team identified as Women and Non-Binary. The film premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival in 2023.
