Following up Sasquatch Sunset, it was announced the Zellner Brothers would embark on the alien invasion comedy Alpha Gang led by Cate Blanchett. They’ve now amassed quite an ensemble, with Dave Bautista, Steven Yeun, Zoë Kravitz, Léa Seydoux, Riley Keough, and Channing Tatum all coming aboard the project, Deadline reports. Birds Of Prey director Cathy Yan casts Jenna Ortega and Natalie Portman in her dark comedy, The Gallerist. More on the movie here.
Jenna Ortega continues her ascent through the Hollywood ranks. This year’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice saw Ortega reunite with Tim Burton following their success with the Netflix series Wednesday. It proved to be an adroit step, with the film quickly becoming a hit for Warner Bros – which the studio sorely needed given that several of its other blockbusters this year (with the exception of Dune: Part Two) didn’t really work out as hoped at the box office.
Whether it’s the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, or exiting the Scream series just as its momentum began to fade, Ortega seems to have developed a knack for attaching herself to projects that increase her movie stardom.
The next couple of years will be particularly interesting, though. Ortega is said...

After coming face-to-face with the Ghost With the Most in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jenna Ortega will deal with another dead guy alongside Natalie Portman in Cathy Yan‘s upcoming film The Gallerist. Ortega and Portman are circling the project, which finds the Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn helmer back in the director’s chair. In addition to directing the picture, Yan co-wrote the screenplay with James Pedersen. In addition to her starring role, Portman produces the film alongside Jonathan King, Ash Sarohia, Tom McCarthy, Rae Baron, Sophie Mas, and Zola Elgart Glassman.
Details about The Gallerist are scarce. Still, Deadline says the film focuses on a desperate gallerist who conspires to sell a dead guy at Art Basel Miami. If Portman and Ortega join the movie, Yan’s next project could become one of the hottest tickets in Tinsel Town.

Playing a comic book character like Harley Quinn has its ups and downs, like dealing with intense fandoms and getting to pretend to do some seriously wild things. For actor Margot Robbie, one of the hardest parts of playing the Joker's gal wasn't trying to perform any stunts or memorize unusual dialogue, but instead was just a matter of wearing one of her costumes.
In the 2016 film "Suicide Squad," Robbie played her first live-action incarnation of the character before reprising the role in the 2020 film "Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)" and the 2021 film "The Suicide Squad." She had plenty of outrageous outfits in each film, but her main costume from the first film was a major pain. Not only did she have to wear ridiculous short shorts that would have caused a constant wedgie, but she also had some janky jewelry that caused her some painful problems.

The character of Harley Quinn — a harlequin-clad moll for the Joker — first appeared on "Batman: The Animated Series" in the 1992 episode "Joker's Favor." She was played by voice actress Arleen Sorkin, who gave the character a Brooklyn-adjacent "bubblehead" voice that immediately struck viewers and quickly earned the character fans. Harley Quinn was very similar in look and presentation to a character named Prank (Zoey Clark), the kooky moll of the Trickster on the 1990 series "The Flash." Her origin story was simple: Dr. Harleen Quinzel served as the Joker's psychiatrist, and he had such a powerful personality, that she abandoned ordinary life to become his supervillainess girlfriend.
Harley would appear in only nine episodes of "Batman: Tas," but she eventually began appearing in DC Comics. In recent years, Harley has become arguably a more popular character than the Joker and has formed a life of her own, breaking up with the...

The DC Extended Universe is dead.
Starting in 2008, several feature films based on Marvel Comics proved to be big hits, and Marvel Studios (in conjunction with Disney) would go on to rewrite the blockbuster landscape. For 15 straight years, Marvel dominated the box office by taking a serialized TV structure and applying it to movies, hence birthing the "Cinematic Universe." Each film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was directly connected to all the others. In the "season finale episodes," characters would team up. The MCU never told very sophisticated stories — they all boiled down to "good guys" and "bad guys" engaging in pugilism — but they captured the public's attention like no film series had before.
Naturally, Warner Bros. tried to imitate the McU's success by launching the Dceu in 2013. After all, Warner Bros. still owned the film rights to an enormous back catalogue of superhero characters, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman,...

Exclusive: John Boyega is set to headline and executive produce The Book of Eli, a TV series prequel to the 2010 post-apocalyptic action film that starred Denzel Washington in the title role, Deadline has learned. Boyega will play younger version of Washington’s Eli in the project, which hails from the movie’s writer, Gary Whitta, creator/writer/executive producer of the potential series, and its directors, the Hughes brothers, who executive produce. The film’s producer Alcon Entertainment is the studio on the TV project, which is about to be taken out to select premium buyers, I hear.
The neo-Western Book of Eli movie takes place 30 years after a nuclear catastrophe caused an ecocide. It revolves around Eli (Washington), a nomad who fights his way across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while protecting a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation.

The DC Extended Universe is dead; long live the DC Universe. What has felt like a months-long inevitability has finally turned into reality with the release of "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," which technically functions as the last chapter of the superhero saga that began a little over 10 years ago with Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel." What comes next will be the beginning of a much different approach, shepherded by DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. But compared to the slate of high-profile projects that Warner Bros. confidently announced back in 2014, it's obvious that things didn't quite go according to plan -- and if ever there were a fitting eulogy for a franchise with plenty of unexpected highs and lows, well, that would be it.
To state the obvious, it was never the studio's intention to bring things to a conclusion with an "Aquaman" sequel, of all things.

Beginning with Dead Pigs, Cathy Yan’s feature directorial debut premiered at 2018’s Sundance Film Festival garnering Rysdahl and the rest of the cast a special jury prize for ensemble acting. But despite the recognition and rave reviews, the foreign-language film failed to receive distribution until a year after Yan’s second feature, Birds of Prey, had been released by Warners in 2020. Contrary to what you might think based on the plethora of Christmas films and TV series that flooded the streaming landscape recently, we're only now heading into the final month of 2023 and the winter holiday bonanza that comes with them. For Netflix, in particular, December is a time when it pulls out the big guns, tempting its subscribers with an eclectic blend of prestige television, awards season contenders, and crowd-pleasers. This year, that includes the end of the royal drama with "The Crown" season 6, part 2, Bradley Cooper going for the gold (again) with his Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro," and whatever the hell Zack Snyder has cooked up for us with the first half of his two-part "Star Wars"-inspired cosmic epic, "Rebel Moon -- Part One: A Child of Fire."

David Ayer has long been vocal about his frustrating experience directing the 2016 DC Comics movie “Suicide Squad,” and deep dislike for the version that was ultimately released in theaters.
But in a recent appearance on Jon Bernthal’s podcast “Real Ones” (via The Playlist), Ayer made it clear that 7 years later the emotional wounds are still fresh.
Said Ayer: “Hollywood—I tell people—is like watching someone you love get f—ed by someone you hate. The big one is ‘Suicide Squad.’ That shit broke me. That handed me my ass.”

For as much as the controversial DC Extended Universe or Snyderverse is known for its desaturated visuals and hard-edged tone, there are several entries in the franchise that have managed to buck this trend. For example, David F. Sandberg's "Shazam!" is a decidedly comedic superhero affair with dashes of horror and drama, whereas Cathy Yan's "Birds of Prey" is a Day-Glo-colored riot grrrl rumpus.
Then there's James Wan's "Aquaman," a film full of pleasingly bright colors and enough genre shifts to make your head spin. One minute, it's a dramatic fantasy parable about environmentalism; the next, it's an aquatic horror B-movie. Then, before you know it, the film suddenly turns into a fish-out-of-water rom-com (no pun intended) in the vein of Disney's "The Little Mermaid," only to abruptly transform again, this time into the DC equivalent of a pulpy Jules Verne sci-fi adventure.
Does it always work?...

High school is a battlefield, no one gets out unscathed. So why decide to enmesh yourself in that world for the sake of entertainment? Director Cecilia Aldarondo is no stranger to mining the past for new revelations. Her 2016 documentary “Memories of a Penitent Heart” focused on Aldarondo’s quest to learn more about her uncle Miguel, who struggled with identity and his sexuality within a strict Catholic upbringing. Now, the director turns the camera on herself for her HBO documentary, “You Were My First Boyfriend,” premiering Saturday at the SXSW Film Festival.
The documentary was a tough sell with its focus on Aldarondo’s own high school experiences and how, as a fortysomething adult, she still finds herself haunted by the emotional trauma she experienced during that time. The documentary is as funny as it is heartbreaking and for the filmmaker it’s stories like these that often hit audiences.

John Boyega is headed back to sci-fi territory for a new film that sounds like it could have come from the archives of the Black Mirror team. He's starring in new romantic thriller The Freshening, which has Cathy Yan attached to write and direct.
Inspired by Rachel Khong’s short story, published in the Paris Review, the film will be set in a near future where tensions over race and gender have reached a violent extreme and the US government institutes a public health initiative known as ‘The Freshening’: every American receives an injection, after which everyone only sees others as the same race and gender as themselves.
The story charts what happens when a street drug hits the scene, promising a chance to see the world as it really is, and newly met Sam and Reese (Boyega) must decide whether to disrupt the ‘freshened’ world?

It’s been a few years since we’ve seen Cathy Yan debut a film project. Back at the beginning of 2020, shortly before Covid took over and shut everything down, Yan’s “Birds of Prey” was released in theaters. Obviously, that film didn’t do as well as many had hoped, but the filmmaker proved she’s one of the best up-and-coming directors working today. Since then, she’s worked on “Succession,” directing an episode of that series.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a movie directed by , Cathy Yan. An action film with super héroes that is entertaining enough to be watched
Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey. She also has several friends to “shell out” justice and lots of kicks.
Storyline
The relationship between Harley Quinn and The Joker has ended, so the girl needs to find something to while away the tedium. Things look easy for this when half of Gotham is after you and you have unlimited chances for doing somersaults.
The Movie Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
Somersaults, blows, shots, and every once in a while a joke. Not bad at all: this is like Girl Power in which the girls do the kicking and the foot always lands in the same place in the anatomy of the guy.

When looking back at the most influential action movies of the 21st century, it's impossible to not mention the "Kill Bill" films. Quentin Tarantino delivered a mesmerizing spectacle that paid tribute to classics within the genre. There aren't many characters in the past few decades as iconic as The Bride (Uma Thurman). It's unlikely that we would be seeing as many great female-centric action films today if it wasn't for Thurman's performance.
Although it was released in two chapters, a synthesized version of the story titled "Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair" has been seen by some lucky Tarantino fans. While the film's story was seemingly completed, Tarantino has teased the possibility of developing a third installment. Tarantino has often hinted at potential projects that he never ended up developing, but the possibility of "Kill Bill: Vol. 3" is pretty exciting. Here are 15 movies like "Kill Bill" that you need to see.

Harley Quinn, the multi-faceted supervillain sidekick-turned-hero, just turned 30. And like any self-respecting 30-year-old, she should probably take inventory of her growth over the years, because she has a lot to be proud of. The character was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for "Batman: The Animated Series," and debuted on September 11, 1992, but she's come a long way from being Joker's horny, homicidal sidekick and romantic interest. In the past decade or so, she's become a fascinating feminist figure, a bisexual powerhouse who's a surprising face of representation for survivors of abusive relationships. It's been a bumpy road full of weird missteps and unfortunate costume choices, but even if Harley Quinn hasn't become a full-fledged hero in the canon, she's become one of my heroes.
As an abuse survivor and former manic pixie dream girl myself, Harley Quinn used to frustrate me, but her growth has made her into one of my favorite fictional characters.

While Margot Robbie and her costars in David Ayers' 2016 "Suicide Squad" film got off to a rough start with their DC Comics characters, Robbie has since come into her own more as the Joker's ex-girlfriend, Harley Quinn, in Cathy Yan's "Birds of Prey" and James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad." So how does Robbie feel about another actress — and not just any actress, but the Oscar-nominated Lady Gaga — moving in on her territory as Harley?
It seems she's fully supportive of Gaga and doesn't feel threatened by her casting in "Joker: Folie a Deux," the upcoming musical "Joker" sequel with the title that is sure to inspire some pronunciation contretemps.
While on the promotional trail for her new film "Amsterdam," which also stars onetime Batman actor Christian Bale, Robbie inevitably ended up fielding a question about an unrelated comic book movie. Robbie took the question in good stride, explaining...

The Emmys often award the same shows over and over again, and, well, they did that again tonight by giving Best Comedy Series to last year’s winner “Ted Lasso” and Best Drama Series to the winner two years ago, “Succession.” But it wasn’t a sweep of the Comedy and Drama categories at the 74th Prime Emmy Awards by those two shows by any means.
In fact, the Emmys spread the wealth quite a bit: in the Comedy categories, “Ted Lasso” indeed won four Emmys: for Lead Actor Jason Sudeikis, Supporting Actor Brett Goldstein, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, as well as the top prize. But “Abbott Elementary” also won two major prizes: Sheryl Lee Ralph for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and for Best Writing for a Comedy Series.

Some stories seem impossible to translate from the written page to the moving image, but a few brave creatives have taken on the task and created masterpieces. Japanese author Yasutaka Tsutsui's acclaimed 1993 novel "Paprika" is one such story, about a brilliant young psychologist named Chiba who begins experimenting with dream therapy. Chiba and her research partner, Tokita, develop a machine that allows them to not only view the dreams of others but experience them firsthand. When their dream-walking machine is stolen, the two have to figure out how to track him down in the real world while dealing with the repercussions in their dreams. It's mind-bending science fiction that works in part because of the limitless potential of the imagination.

What if there was a device that allowed the user to enter other people's dreams? What if one of the devices was stolen by someone who could implant ideas in people's minds to control them? What kind of story could come out of this concept?
If your first thought is Christopher Nolan's "Inception," then congratulations, you played yourself. That film became the rare example of a movie that becomes a shorthand term for its premise — entering people's dreams. Still, it pales in comparison to the film it so blatantly rips off, Satoshi Kon's "Paprika," an anime movie adapted from Yasutaka Tsutsui's 1993 novel of the same name.
That novel was almost adapted to live-action over a decade ago by the late, great Wolfgang Petersen, but now Deadline reports that Tsutsui's "Paprika" is getting a second chance at becoming a live-action project, on the small screen. Cathy Yan has...

Last year, Jessica Hobbs became just the fourth woman to win the Best Drama Directing Emmy when she prevailed for helming “War,” the Season 4 finale of “The Crown.” This year, three women have a chance to grow that number to five and make it back-to-back female champs for the first time ever.
Karyn Kusama (the “Yellowjackets” pilot), Lorene Scafaria (“Too Much Birthday” from “Succession”) and Cathy Yan (“The Disruption” from “Succession”) are vying for the prize alongside former champ Jason Bateman (“A Hard Way to Go” from “Ozark”), Hwang Dong-hyuk, Mark Mylod (“All the Bells Say” from “Succession”) and Ben Stiller (“The We We Are” from “Severance”). Kusama, Scafaria and Yan are looking to join Hobbs, Karen Arthur (“Cagney & Lacey,” 1985) and Mimi Leder and Reed Morano as the handful of women to win the category.
That number is embarrassingly small, but voters have been nominating more women in recent years.

Kusama, Scafaria and Yan are looking to join Hobbs, Karen Arthur (“Cagney & Lacey,” 1985) and Mimi Leder and Reed Morano as the handful of women to win the category.

If this is a dream, please, don’t wake me up. Deadline reports that Cathy Yan is developing a live-action series inspired by Yasutaka Tsutsui’s mind-bending novel Paprika. The project is happening at Amazon Studios and Hivemind, with Yan directing and executive producing.
According to the novel’s official description, Paprika presents an imaginative narrative about a psychiatric institute that develops technology to invade people’s dreams.
“When prototype models of a dream-invading device go missing at the Institute for Psychiatric Research, it transpires that someone is using them to drive people insane. Threatened personally and professionally, brilliant psychotherapist Atsuko Chiba has to journey into the world of fantasy to fight her mysterious opponents. As she delves deeper into the imagination, the borderline between dream and reality becomes increasingly blurred, and nightmares begin to leak into the everyday realm. The scene is set for a final showdown between the dream detective and her enemies,...

Both Cathy Yan and Lorene Scafaria have had robust careers directing features, so getting the opportunity to helm an episode of Succession presented a new opportunity for each. Scafaria, known best for her 2019 crime drama Hustlers, had already worked in television, having directed three episodes of the Fox comedy New Girl, but she saw Succession as a dream job largely because it’s one of her favorite shows of all time. Yan, who helmed the 2020 superhero film Birds of Prey, had never directed TV, but she also considers herself a huge fan of Jesse Armstrong’s HBO drama.
Yan directed “The Disruption,” the third episode of the Emmy-nominated third season that reintroduces the cast to the larger world after a mostly isolated first two hours spent scrambling in the aftermath of season two’s finale. Scafaria is responsible for episode seven, “Too Much Birthday,...
