Zachary Levi returns for a sequel to DC’s 2019 superhero hit, alongside returning director David F. Sandberg. As such, the follow-up doesn’t quite hit the heights of the first film, but there’s a decent amount of fun to be had along the way.
The plot picks up two years after the events of the previous film, with Billy Batson (Asher Angel / Levi) and his Shazam Family of teens-who-turn-into-adult-superheroes established as a team of costumed crimefighters in their city, even if they occasionally screw up, earning them the label “the Philadelphia Fiascos”. However, when the vengeful Daughters of Atlas (Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu) show up,...

Helen Mirren recently made her DC Extended Universe debut in Shazam! Fury of The Gods. The actor said she did a few of her stunts in the movie, resulting in a painful injury. However, Mirren refused to tell anyone on the set of Shazam! 2 that she had gotten hurt.
Helen Mirren causes trouble as the villain Hespera in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’
In the first Shazam! movie, a young Billy Batson is chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam to succeed him as his champion. Billy gains superpowers allowing him to transform into an adult superhero. He and his foster brother, Freddy, work to discover Billy’s new powers, and along the way, Billy shares his powers with his foster siblings, defeating the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
The long-awaited sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods recently premiered, and this time, Billy and his siblings have two extremely powerful celestials to defeat.

"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" has the unenviable task of opening during an unprecedented creative limbo. Is it the last shakes of the Dceu death rattle, or will these characters stick around for the soft-rebooted Dcu? Whatever cinematic universe it officially belongs to, it's an action-packed, fun adventure flick. The first one delighted fans and critics with its mix of "Big" meets "Superman." There's still plenty of that residual charm here, even when the big CGI battles take over.
Two years after the first movie's events, the Shazamily's day-to-day crime-fighting antics are about to escalate when three ticked-off deities, aka the Daughters of Atlas, appear — Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and Anthea (Rachel Zegler). Miffed that the Wizard (Djimon Hounsou) bestowed the power of the gods to children, they vow to reclaim that power and rebuild the Gods' Realm, even if...

Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan clearly like working together. The day before Shazam! Fury of the Gods hit theaters, the co-writers couldn’t say enough good things about each other, tossing questions and praise back and forth on a mid-morning Zoom call with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m a huge fan of Henry’s writing,” said Morgan, who’s known for his work as a screenwriter on The Fast and the Furious franchise, about hopping onto the Shazam! sequel with Gayden. “He has this kind of a superpower of being able to tap into a teen voice that I just have no access to…I just kind of am in awe of that.”
Gayden felt just as strongly about Morgan, and even wrote a Fast and Furious joke into into the script as a tribute.

Most sequels have a tough enough job just living up to their first movie, and this one would have had a big enough job just being a sequel to the original Shazam! What director David F. Sandberg’s first movie had was the novelty of the story of a boy having the power to just speak a magic word and finding himself in his now adult “ultimate form”, plus the power of being nearly Superman’s equal (some would argue even more), a fun novelty super hero movie. The story also had the subplot of young Billy Batson’s quest to find his mother after having been in foster homes his whole life, only to realize that the foster home he is in has provided him with the family he really needed by the end of the movie. In the end, he creates the Shazam family,...

Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is back with the rest of his super-powered foster family for another adventure. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now playing in theaters, but it hasn’t gotten off to the strongest start. The sequel earned just $3.4 million in Thursday night previews, much less than its predecessor’s $5.9 million. The film is projected to gross anywhere between $35-40 million domestically in its opening weekend

The boy who would be a superhero is back with his foster family to take on their biggest threat yet in the sequel to the 2019 superhero film Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
It’s been a few years since teenager Billy Baston (Asher Angel) was given magical powers by the wizard (Djimon Hounsou) and became an adult superhero (Zachary Levi) whenever he says the word “Shazam.” Since sharing the powers with his foster family, Billy and his siblings have become a team, always working together to save the day.
A perfect example of this is when they work together to save people trapped on a collapsing bridge. Unfortunately, they fail to stop the bridge from collapsing. It’s these types of mistakes and miscalculations that have caused...

DC and New Line Cinema’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods has started off its domestic box office run with $3.4 million in Thursday evening previews.
Prerelease tracking suggests the superhero sequel will open to $35 million this weekend, one of the lower starts for a Hollywood superhero pic. Others believe it has a shot at $40 million, although that would still be behind the $53.5 million domestic opening of the first Shazam! in 2019, including $5.9 million in previews. not adjusted for inflation.
Shazam 2‘s Rotten Tomatoes critics score is a ho-hum 55 percent. That compares to 90 percent for the 2019 movie.
Families — which played a key role in the first movie’s surprise success — remain a challenged moviegoing demo in the pandemic era.
One advantage: the pic is playing in Imax and other premium-format theaters, which carry an upcharge.

DC and New Line Cinema’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods is hoping for some heavenly help when opening this weekend in thousands of theaters across the U.S. and world.
According to prerelease tracking, the superhero pic is expected to start off with $35 million-plus in North America, compared to the $53.5 million domestic debut of Shazam! in 2019, not adjusted for inflation. No major Hollywood studios sets out to make a sequel that doesn’t match the first, leaving many to wonder whether tracking is being too conservative in this instance.
Yet families — which played a key role in the first movie’s performance — remain a challenged moviegoing demo in the pandemic era.

Poor Shazam. Its production and release hampered by Covid and now seemingly lame-ducked by the arrival of a new regime to run DC Studios, the big red-suited lug’s second movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, finally makes its lonely stand in an effort to tap into the good will generated by his 2019 big-screen debut and, perhaps, plead its case to keep this off-brand DC franchise going.
We say off-brand because when the first Shazam! came out, it was a fun, funny, family-oriented, brightly-colored antidote to the ponderous, dark, heavy-handed edgelord theatrics of the Snyderverse that dominated DC for nearly a decade. It had heart, its stakes were relatively small, and its hero was much more relatably human than the brooding bro-dudes and psychotics we had gotten used to from the Dceu.

Plot: After the events in the previous film, it appears Shazam has made a bit of a blunder. It’s a big enough of one to bring the Daughters of Atlas to unleash a little Hell on Earth.
Review: One of the joys of David F. Sandberg’s Shazam was the filmmaker’s mix of humor with a touch of horror. The comedic superhero excelled with the laughs. As well as a few moments fitting of the director’s previous films, Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation. And now, he is back with Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Zachary Levi is once again leading the charge. As is the rest of this charming cast. About halfway through David F. Sandberg’s “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” our hero’s hometown of Philadelphia gets sealed into a giant, magical bubble. What better metaphor for this series’ place in the DC Universe, a sprawling franchise that never quite cohered and is now getting a major retooling at the hands of new brass, do you need?
When Sandberg’s first “Shazam!” film arrived in theaters in March 2019, it was on the heels of massive box office successes like “Aquaman,” “Justice League,” and “Wonder Woman” — the salad days of what was then known as the DC Extended Universe — and a seemingly clever time to release the closest the Dceu had gotten to a standalone film for the younger set. It was cute, funny, sweet, and very much its own thing. It existed in its own bubble, yes, but that wasn’t a bug, it was a feature.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods comes four years after its predecessor, introducing new forces that threaten Billy Batson and his superpowered family. The DC Extended Universe is once again changing direction under new leadership, but the fandom still has the opportunity to explore this continuation. The sequel doesn’t improve on the original, although it finds the beats that comic fans are looking for.

The Shazamily is back, and on a much larger scale, but at its heart this superhero saga is still about family, and that’s the good thing here.
In 2019’s origin story (which goes way back to 1940 comics when the then-named Captain Marvel was introduced), a group of teens in a foster home, often bullied in school and going through life alone, bonded as a family and as their older superhero alter egos. That movie, from Swedish director David F. Sandberg, was a nice hit for the DC brand at Warners and even won over critics. So naturally we could expect a sequel, even as this comic book brand is undergoing major changes. Employing the same mix of humor and heart, but really amping up the super-heroics as it were, this second edition bodes well for its future in the uncertain DC Universe, at least in terms of delivering on what finicky fans expect.

2019’s Shazam! delivered a charming origin story of the DC Comics character Billy Batson, a teenage boy who meets a wizard who bestows on him the ability to become a grown-up superhero upon uttering the magic word. Now, Billy is back, along with his foster siblings, who have similar superhuman alter-egos, in the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods. But like some children who aren’t so cute anymore after they’ve grown up a little, this follow-up lacks much of the appeal of its predecessor. While the film provides the elaborate action set pieces, colorful villains and save-the-world plot mechanics expected of the comic book movie genre, some of the magic is missing.
The story’s villains are the Daughters of Atlas, a trio of ancient goddesses who have come to Earth to reclaim the magical powers that the wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) took from them. (Why they need them,...

The Shazamily is back and ready to fight evil. It's been several years since the last film, and we're just weeks away from the premiere of "Shazam! Fury of the Gods." The kids are growing up, but they're not adults quite yet -- well, not in their house, anyway. One word turns them into their adult counterparts, and they're off to keep crime down in Philadelphia. It's not going well, though, with reports from papers and TV news anchors being really unappreciative of their powers. Not fair! Especially after they save a whole lot of people (and kittens).
Now the Shazamily is facing a new threat in the form of goddesses, aka the Daughters of Atlas, who are looking for a dangerous artifact.
I recently spoke to adult cast members Ross Butler, Grace Caroline Currey (who plays both versions of Mary), Adam Brody, Meagan Good, and D.J. Cotrona about working with their kid counterparts,...

DC will need to crank the PR machine into overdrive if they want Shazam! Fury of the Gods to perform heroically at the box office. According to the first round of projections, New Line Cinema‘s superhero sequel is tracking for a low-end domestic debut of $35 million to $40 million. Meanwhile, optimistic analysts think the film will bank as much as the first film, which pulled around $53.5 million in North America.
It’s worth noting the $35 million prediction comes from Nrg, Hollywood’s leading research firm. They know a thing or two about reading tea leaves for blockbuster debuts. Still, they need to be corrected from time to time. There’s a chance Shazam! Fury of the Gods will overperform, but I’m not holding my breath.
There are a few factors when looking for reasons Shazam 2 could come in at a low number. Despite most of the world moving on from Covid,...

When "Shazam!" hit theaters back in 2019, it was a breath of fresh air not only for the DC Extended Universe but for superhero media as well. While it obviously did have a big world-defining conflict that Billy Batson (Asher Angel and Zachary Levi) had to deal with, it was ultimately a coming-of-age tale all about becoming comfortable with yourself. You are able to create the best possible version of yourself, and that is perhaps best evidenced by the fact that Billy and his foster siblings can now fight crime as the Shazam Family.
So, where does that leave our heroes to go next? According to the latest trailer for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," this puts them right in the path of the Daughters of Atlas, a sisterly duo consisting of Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu), who seek nothing but total power. Sure, that sounds pretty generic for a superhero movie,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains story details about Shazam!
It wasn’t that much of a surprise to pick David F. Sandberg as the director of the Warner Bros. adaptation of Shazam! The director is known mostly for his horror fare like Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation but his credits also include short comedy films. His experience in the two genres make for a cross-section of filmmaking sensibilities that match the style and tone of the DC Comics superhero movie that is not only fun like an action-packed amusement park attraction, but also heartfelt and inclusive.
“I’ve always liked all kinds of movies, so many different genres,” Sandberg tells Deadline. “To me, this was a love letter to movies I grew up with and loved that made me fall in love with film.”

Superheroes in the Springtime? Oh yes, they’re not the mainstay of Summer cinema any longer. Hey, a few even pop up in the Winter. Just about four weeks ago Marvel Studios released their super-powered, high-flying hero Captain Marvel to much praise and big box office bucks. So this new flick has a fairly familiar fella’ in red tights and white cape, guess he’s from the same producers. right? Nope, this powerhouse actually predates all the McU stars (even WWII’s Captain America). Oh, and he hails from Marvel’s long-standing rival, DC Comics. Technically though he’s an acquisition from a defunct comic book kingdom (a bit more on that later). And what’s the source of his astounding abilities? Born on a distant planet? Exposure to weird rays or energy blasts? A bite from an irradiated animal? None of the above, for his myriad of gifts come...

Smallville star John Glover recently did an interview with Fandom Spotlite at Wizard World Cleveland in which he explains why Lionel Luthor was the real hero of Smallville. It basically boils down to how he was the guy who was making other people stronger. He also confirmed that he will be in DC’s upcoming film Shazam! and teased the person he’s playing in the film.
While he did not reveal who exactly he’s playing, he did say that he is playing a “father’s role” in Shazam! He didn’t offer any more details, but now fans can speculate about whose father he is playing.
Some fans have theorized that he could be playing the father of young Billy Baston, who is an orphan in the film after he lost his mother. But I think he’s way too old to be his dad. If he is related to Baston,...

"His name is...! Captain Sparkle Fingers." Warner Bros has finally debuted the full-length second trailer for the Shazam! movie, based on the DC Comics character. The first teaser trailer debuted last summer during Comic-Con, and we haven't seen much since then except for a promo spot on TV. With only one month to go until release, they're dropping a last minute look and it's a good one. Worth the wait, I'd say. Zachary Levi stars as Shazam, and the full cast includes Asher Angel playing Billy Batson, plus Mark Strong as the Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou. Looks like the VFX still need some polishing, but overall seems like it's going to be a super fun movie. I dig the little Batman reference, and music choice. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for David F. Sandberg's Shazam!

"I'd like to purchase some of your finest beer please." Warner Bros has debuted a new extended TV spot for the Shazam! movie, based on the DC Comics character. This aired during the big football game last night, and is now online for everyone to enjoy. We're still waiting for a full trailer, but between the teaser trailer and this new spot I'm already pretty much completely sold on this. Zachary Levi stars as Shazam, and the cast includes Asher Angel as Billy Batson, plus Mark Strong as the Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, as well as Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou. This is looking like it's going to be a very fun movie to watch, I am excited to see this. The comedic tone and amusing kid-as-a-superhero vibe is just what we need from DC right now. Here's the...

Shazam! is on course to serve as the biggest contradiction yet to the old stereotype that Dceu movies are dark and moody, with the film’s first trailer suggesting a light and playful tone, along with a very child-heavy cast.
Like Bruce Wayne, the young Billy Batson is an orphan, but he’s hardly the brooding billionaire loner type, with the character seen posing with his foster family in a photo recently shared to Reddit. While 16-year-old Asher Angel shares the lead role with Zachary Levi, Grace Fulton of Annabelle: Creation fame plays the part of Mary Bromfield, seen here as the tallest of the group.
Meanwhile, Jack Dylan Grazer, seen on the far right, assumes the role of Billy’s best friend Freddy Freeman, the only person who knows of Batson’s secret identity. The cast of foster siblings is rounded out by Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley,...
