Jun Gu graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in 1991 and has since established herself as a prominent documentary director, specializing in sports and cultural documentaries. She holds the distinction of being the first Asian female director to create an official film for the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
For the 29th Beijing Olympic Games, Gu directed two award-winning documentaries: "Dream Weavers - Beijing 2008" and the IOC's official film, "The Everlasting Flame." These films, which took seven years to complete, garnered numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Achievement for Filmmaker Award at the 10th U.S. Newport Beach International Film Festival and the Special Grand Award at the 33rd Montreal International Film Festival. Following this success, in 2010, she directed "Together in Guangzhou," the official film for the Asian Games commissioned by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). She continued her impact in sports documentary filmmaking by producing a film for the 2011 Summer Universiade.
Her work has consistently earned Excellence Awards at the Milano International FICTS Festival, making Jun Gu one of China's most acclaimed sports documentary filmmakers.
In 2022, she directed 2022 Winter Olympics "The Winter Flame," which is awaiting release. Currently, she is in post-production on a new documentary, "Don't Worry, Dad," which follows a blind viola player and his father, a project that has spanned five years.
Beyond sports documentaries, Gu has directed over 90 episodes of documentary television. Between 2012 and 2016, she produced a 10-episode documentary series titled "Between China and the US." From 2014 to 2016, she directed "Headway on the Maritime Silk Road," an 8-episode documentary that received the prestigious Golden Kapok Award at the Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival.
