Syfy fantasy series “The Magicians,” about a group of college students who travel through time and worlds to battle wildly imaginative creatures, draws to a close April 1 after five seasons, having taken viewers on a Harry Potter-meets-video-game thrill ride. Knowing that this is the end of the run gives MastersFX founder and president Todd Masters and his team one last chance to showcase the program’s most popular characters — using their own magic to deliver the makeup effects.
Series creators Sera Gamble and John McNamara had specific ideas about what they wanted in the show’s seven so-called questing creatures, which, when discovered, must grant the magician a wish that helps fulfill a quest. For instance, Sir Effingham (played by Sean Maguire) is half man, half pig, and he looks a bit like Benjamin Franklin.

Whether Darren Criss was shooting people in the face, puking in public bathrooms or casually rubbing his crotch while standing over a sleeping couple, he sure made Wednesday’s season premiere of American Crime Story feel like the darkest episode of Glee yet.

I’m half-joking, but considering this is Criss’ first series-regular TV role since Blaine Anderson warbled his final warble in 2015 (not to mention Criss’ professional reunion with Glee boss Ryan Murphy), I trust you’ll overlook my inability to disassociate — at least in this first week.

4.16 Heartbreaker
Grimm took on two storylines that dealt with heartbreak this week – one figurative, and one literal.
A beautiful girl struggles with loneliness due to the fact that any man who finds her attractive will suffer a painful death through heart failure. This is caused by a poison emitted through the skin of the girl, who is a frog-like Wesen called a Folterseele. As Monroe succinctly puts it: “If you kiss this frog, your face blows up and you die.”
Meanwhile, Nick valiantly continues to implore Juliette to come back home and work out their problems, even though the sight of her physically repels him.

Exclusive: Christine Evangelista (The Joneses), Xosha Roquemore, Josh Kelly (One Live To Live) and Nico Evers Swindell (Prince William in William & Kate) have been cast as the leads of MTV’s comedy pilot Dumb Girls, from Awkward creator/executive producer Lauren Iungerich. The ensemble project, which will be produced in-house, revolves around a group of twentysomethings. It centers on Michelle (Evangelista), who is uber-competent at her job but foolish when it comes to guys. Supported by her stalwart friends — Alex (Xosha), Danny (Josh Kelly), who admits her likes her more than a friend, and Ian (Swindell) — she mounts a plan to get the guy she likes. Iungerich is executive producing the pilot, which starts production next month, with Robyn Meisinger and Kim Fleary. Kelly, repped by Talenworks and Thruline, is a regular on One Life to Live and has not been approached yet about continuing on the show when it moves online,...

Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...

Meet Camilla Luddington and Nico Evers-Swindell, co-stars of the already-completed DVD William and Kate: The Movie: Awesome! It’s never too soon to come out with a movie about a current event, especially before that event has even occurred (their story’s pretty much over though, right?) It’ll be just like The Queen, but with negative 70 years of history and inspiring fewer inner-monologues about “how old would I skew?” sexual turmoil! The film has already been ripped apart by viewers on Twitter, which is all I need to hear, cause those dudes are reserved and forgiving about all of culture. Everyone seemed pretty on board with The Oscars this year, just to name one random true example. I just hope the William & Kate movie can hearken back to the glory years of movies shamelessly capitalizing on completely unresolved current events at the height of their popularity: (pic via Getty...

Lifetime's "William & Kate" is not getting some love from the British too. The TV movie which was rushed to meet the Royal Wedding event later this month, was panned by critics upon its Sunday, April 24 premiere on the U.K.'s Channel 5 and was attacked by viewers on Twitter.
Critics called it "toe-curlingly, teeth-furringly, pillow-bitingly ghastly". The viewers are not so kind either, writing such things as "Have just seen 1 second of Will and Kate the movie & can confirm it is the most excruciating & awful thing that mankind has ever created" and "Why am I watching William and Kate - The Movie? It's the funniest doggiest sh*ttiest thing ever."
The cast, the directing and editing were all blamed for the poor reviews but some still take what's left of the movie. One tweeter said, "Just watched William and Kate: The Movie. Omg. There are no words. So bad it's brilliant.

Love is in the air, but there's a definite whiff of opportunism in there too
The big story
A nation holds its breath. Unshakeable from the collective imagination is the image of a tall, blond, regal-looking young man and his shapely dark-haired companion. In feverish newsrooms they check the wires for stories of surges in sales of booze, bunting and widescreen TVs among a recession-hit populace thirsty for a shot of euphoria. Yes, Lifetime TV's William & Kate: the movie, is coming to your screens this Sunday.
Not everyone was swept away in the excitement of the royal romance-themed Us movie. Indeed Lifetime's William, whose name sounds like one Beano writers might have concocted for a used car salesman, Nico Evers-Swindell, felt compelled to defend the film. Why? Well, the Daily Mail had shown it some tough love, calling it "truly terrible: a shoddily cast, poorly executed, badly edited and surprisingly...

Nico Evers-Swindell dismisses verdicts ranging from 'terrible' to 'ghastly' with praise of 'fun, whimsical' film William & Kate
The actor playing Prince William in a Us television film of the royal romance has defended the project after critics slated it.
The Daily Mail review of Lifetime TV's William & Kate: Let Love Rule labelled the film "truly terrible: a shoddily cast, poorly executed, badly edited and surprisingly boring account", while the Guardian's own Stephen Bates found it "toe-curlingly, teeth-furringly, pillow-bitingly ghastly".
But Nico Evers-Swindell brushed off the attacks on what he considers a "fun, whimsical and romantic" script. "It was always intended to be a fun ride, a light romance, a love story at the heart, and just a jolly good time," he told the Hollywood Reporter.
He suggested he had expected some adverse reaction, saying: "You're dealing with the golden boy and golden girl of Britain right now … This wasn't a British production,...

The actor who portrayed Prince William in Lifetime's critically-panned William & Kate: The Movie has defended the film. Nico Evers-Swindell hit back at critics who rubbished the production, which one described as being "toe-curlingly, teeth-furringly, pillow-bitingly ghastly". "There's a good reason I'm not reading the reviews," the actor told The Hollywood Reporter. "You're dealing with the golden boy and golden girl of Britain right now. "This wasn't a British production, Tom Hooper didn't direct this, this isn't The King's Speech. This isn't an in-depth look at the royal family." He continued: "I don't know [what] anyone could have expected in 30 days of development, from a network that's known for romance. It was always intended to be a fun ride, a light (more)...

While ABC's "20/20" was busy airing a behind-the-scenes look at the real-life Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding plans, Lifetime was airing "William & Kate," the made-for-tv movie starring Nico Evers Swindell and Camilla Luddington as the royal couple.
The first hour was a charming, typical Lifetime movie about two friends at university falling for each other. It was full of cute looks and silly moments working on school projects, culminating with a kiss in (what else?) a rainstorm. How romantic.
The second hour saw William and Kate become a couple, but have to deal with him wanting to keep her private and away from the press, much to Kate's consternation because it left the paparazzi free to speculate about William's love life.
Once they were out of the closet, so to speak, the movie showed how much Kate's life changed once they went public, including an etiquette scene that would've made...

As the Royal Wedding draws ever closer, Lifetime's made-for-tv movie "William & Kate," which chronicles the couple's eight-year relationship, is the next event building up to the big day. Louise Linton stars as Vanessa Rose Bellows, a good friend of Kate's who is not at all impressed by the future King of England.
"Vanessa is definitely the most down-to-earth of the group. She's sort of a tomboy. She's not at all impressed by the royals. She's certainly not impressed by the way William treats Kate," Linton tells Zap2it. "She's not the type of girl to be overwhelmed because of somebody's wealth, prestige or standing in life. She's much more involved in the more grounded and more authentic things. So while she's very happy that Kate's happy, she also becomes very upset when Kate's upset and encourages Kate to walk away."
While Linton does play a character quite firmly based on a real person,...

Playing a future princess in the upcoming Lifetime movie William and Kate was a real wake-up call for actress Camilla Luddington. "Clearly, I need to talk to her about what to wear," the British actress, 26, joked to reporters on Friday. "I got to exchange my biker boots for her really nice shoes and gorgeous dresses. It had me come home and feel depressed about my own wardrobe!" Playing Kate Middleton meant 72 costume changes for Luddington - sometimes up to 12 per day. "I would see the outfits on the rack and think, 'Oh, that's not going to go together,'" she adds.

The TV movie William & Kate missed a trick with its low-budget casting. Who would you have appointed to the royal roles?
This special edition of Casting the News is slightly unusual in that, well, it's already been cast. Thanks to the Lifetime TV movie William & Kate, we already know who'd play the principal cast in a cinematic adaptation of the upcoming royal wedding. Quite obviously, Nico Evers-Swindell (State Trooper #2 in Edge of Darkness) would play Prince William, while only Camilla Luddington (from one episode of Days of Our Lives) has the chops to pull off a convincing Kate Middleton. Meanwhile, Ben Cross from Chariots of Fire would play Prince Charles and Serena Scott Thomas would play Carole Middleton and that's that. Bye! Thanks for reading!
Oh, fine. Let's do this properly. After all, our resources are far greater than Lifetime's – we can tell the difference between a good film and a bad film,...

Mountains in Gloucestershire, London buses driving on the right – and that's before you get to the dialogue
There are movies so bad that they transcend awfulness. Ed Wood's Plan 9 from Outer Space and Glen or Glenda? perhaps, or Troll 2. And then there is William and Kate: The Movie.
Coming to a DVD outlet near you shortly. So bad it's awful, toe-curlingly, teeth-furringly, pillow-bitingly ghastly. You begin to wonder what the happy young couple have done to deserve this. It will probably be a smash.
Perhaps the PR handout gives it away: "Shot entirely in Los Angeles and inspired by true events." That might account for the mountains in the backdrop to a pheasant shoot in Gloucestershire, buses driving on the right in London, the Middletons' modern house transformed into a Californian Tudor mansion and the famous dragon boat race training that Kate Middleton once undertook on the...
