Netflix is set to break new ground in supernatural drama with “The Boroughs,” a unique series from the creators of “Stranger Things” that shifts the genre’s focus to older protagonists. Announced during the streaming platform’s 2025 content presentation, the show promises to blend horror and humor in a retirement community setting.
The series follows a group of senior residents who must band together to fight an otherworldly threat targeting their most valuable resource: time. Creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, with oversight from Matt and Ross Duffer, have crafted a premise that moves beyond traditional supernatural storytelling.
“This time our misfits are a little on the older side. They ride golf carts, not bikes,” Matt Duffer said, highlighting the show’s distinctive approach. The series will be set in a retirement community located in the New Mexico desert, offering a fresh perspective on supernatural drama.

When word of The Boroughs, a new series produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers, first got out more than two years ago, the supernatural/horror drama was referred to as “Stranger Things at a retirement home.”
Netflix pushed back at that description and the link between the two shows. At the streamer’s Next on Netflix 2025 slate presentation Wednesday, the Duffers made the connection themselves, revealing for the first time that, like their Stranger Things counterparts, the characters in The Burroughs also will be battling “otherworldly evil.”
The Duffers made the comments while speaking about two upcoming series from their Upside Down Pictures, The Boroughs and Something Very Bad is Going to Happen.
“Of the two projects, The Boroughs probably shares the most DNA with Stranger Things because it’s about a group of misfits who fight an otherworldly evil,” Matt Duffer said. “Only unlike Stranger Things, it...

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim got a mixed reception on its December 13 launch, and Warner Bros.' Lord of the Rings romance problem could have something to do with it. The movie was perfectly inoffensive in many ways, and it was refreshing to get a theatrical release for a new anime movie, especially for the first-ever Lord of the Rings anime movie. Kenji Kamiyama's animated picture follows Peter Jackson's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies, which are undeniably tough acts to follow, but the romance difficulties loomed large.
As the only company that currently has the rights to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit novels into movies, Warner Bros. has a monopoly on Lord of the Rings films. Jackson launched a titan of a movie franchise with the first Lord of the Rings trilogy, debuting characters...

It has been over 20 years since Peter Jackson’s adaptations of The Lord of the Rings were all released onto the big-screen. With box office takings that reach almost $3 billion worldwide, 17 Academy Award wins, and extended edition marathons which repeatedly show at cinemas, it is an understatement to call this adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s novels a success.
Ever since, there have been repeated attempts to recapture the success of that massively influential trilogy. Peter Jackson returned to direct a trilogy adaptation of The Hobbit, which may have replicated the financial success but fell short everywhere else. What may be most impressive about the new film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is that they can make a standalone Middle Earth story feel like a part of that world, but still fresh and original. The bold choice of animation is so vintage that it gives the film the quality of a timeless throwback — dynamic and fluid, adding to the immersive quality.

Despite several attempts to recapture it across multiple media, it’s clear that Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy was lightning in a bottle. Not that it’s stopping the people who greenlight big-budget projects from trying, and Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim is the best-case scenario for that effort: A visually striking, self-contained adventure bringing a new perspective to one of the linchpin tales contained in the Appendices to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novels, combining cutting-edge Japanese animation with the audiovisual language established by Jackson’s original trilogy of films.

The familiar presence, or at least voice, of Miranda Otto provides a reassuring connective tissue between the Lord of the Rings films and a new animated prequel: Her Éowyn, previously seen in Peter Jackson’s juggernaut live-action trilogy, narrates The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, set in her homeland of Rohan some 183 years earlier. Serving both as insurance against New Line losing the screen rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels and as an appetizer to the upcoming live-action Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (scheduled for 2026), the distinctly anime-style feature should prove equally appealing to both diehard fans and newcomers.

Of all the blockbusters to receive the never-ending franchise revival treatment, "The Lord of the Rings" was always going to be the toughest nut to crack. Prime Video found this out the hard way with their "The Rings of Power" streaming series, seemingly unprepared for the feedback from a (let's call it passionate) fanbase that might as well have multiple PhDs in J.R.R. Tolkien apologia and never take kindly to deviations from established canon. And as anyone who sat through the mind-numbing "The Hobbit" trilogy can attest, we've already seen what happens when the fine line between art and commerce isn't merely crossed, but obliterated. In that sense, Middle-earth is the furthest thing from the mystical realm of Shambhala, blissfully isolated from Hollywood getting its grubby little hands on it. It's over a decade too late for that, I'm afraid.

Amazon’s Prime Video since 2022 has been doing its own attempt to capture the magic of J.R.R. Tolkien’s wildly popular Lord of the Rings universe with The Rings of Power, setting it apart from Peter Jackson’s Lotr and Hobbit trilogies, but still suggesting it is a distant cousin of those films. Now, however, Jackson himself is behind another incarnation, the animated The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, joined by his key Lotr contributors Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens — all won a boatload of Oscars and film immortality in the early part of this century with the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films, each nominated for Best Picture, and finally sweeping it all in 2003 with 11 Academy Awards for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. This was followed by the Hobbit trilogy.

In this dark age of assembly line sequels, remakes, and spin-offs, a feature-length anime film set within Middle-earth — specifically in the version of it that Peter Jackson immortalized with his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy — qualifies as an appreciably novel method for Warner Bros. to milk a few more dollars from J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy universe. Regrettable as it is that “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” is a paper-thin prequel that stretches a single page of Tolkien’s appendices into a 134-minute story of how the fortress of Helm’s Deep got its name (spoiler alert: it was named after a guy named Helm), I suppose we should be grateful that this limp and cheap-looking epic is bad in a few different ways than we’ve come to expect? At least it aspires to mine a fresh experience from the all too familiar tedium of...

The latest collaboration between Netflix and Executive Producers The Duffer Brothers (“Stranger Things”) is the supernatural mystery series “The Boroughs.” Per Variety, six new cast members have been added, including actors Dee Wallace and Ed Begley Jr. (Strange Darling).
Rafael Casal, Jane Kaczmarek (“The Changeling”), Eric Edelstein, and Mousa Hussein Kraish have also joined the cast.
The logline for the upcoming series sounds like a blend of “Stranger Things“ and Cocoon that sees Senior citizens saving the world from an otherworldly threat. The official logline:
“In a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time.”
The six new cast additions join previously announced cast members Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. In other words, “The Boroughs“ is shaping up to have an impressive cast.

In its entertainment and services section, which includes comic book publisher Dark Horse Media, Embracer reported a 14% drop in organic growth. This decline was due to “lower activity and tough comparisons to last year” within its Middle-earth Enterprises branch, which holds the “Lord of the Rings” rights.
Middle-earth Enterprises had a “slow quarter” compared to last year, mainly due to a lack of new game releases. However, it did generate “higher film revenue than expected,” according to the company.
The PC/Console game “The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria” launched on Steam and Xbox earlier this summer and “performed slightly above management expectations.” Another release, “Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed,” saw “slower than expected” early digital sales, Embracer said.
Looking ahead, the company is optimistic about the upcoming anime “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” set to release in the U.S. and internationally next month.

As a massive fan of the Duffer Brothers and their hit series Stranger Things, I couldn’t be more excited for their next big Netflix project: The Boroughs. After the wild ride we experienced in Hawkins, Indiana, the idea of diving into another supernatural adventure from the Duffers is enough to have me counting down the days until its release.

New Line Cinema is marching into New York City Comic-Con with a special presentation for the upcoming original anime feature The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The panel places Lotr fans at the heart of the world, which J. R. R. Tolkien created, giving them a front-row seat for an animated event film arranged by the award-winning filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex TV series). Today’s BTS video for The War of the Rohirrim brings us behind the magic of Kamiyama’s film, highlighting the painstaking process of creating a high-concept fantasy adventure from scribbles and scratches.

Exclusive: The Duffer Brothers‘ upcoming Netflix supernatural mystery The Boroughs, created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, has added Jena Malone (Love Lies Bleeding), Carlos Miranda (Station 19), Seth Numrich (Under the Banner of Heaven) and Alice Kremelberg (The Sinner).
Malone plays “Claire”; Miranda plays “Paz”; Numrich plays “Blaine”; and Kremelberg plays “Anneliese.” They join the previously announced cast of Alfred Molina as “Sam, ”Geena Davis as “Renee,” Alfre Woodard as “Judy,” Denis O’Hare as “Wally,” Clarke Peters as “Art,” and Bill Pullman as “Jack.”
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who also serve as showrunners, The Boroughs is set in a seemingly picturesque retirement community where a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time.
Some have speculated the eight-episode drama will be a Stranger Things with an older cast or Stranger Things set in a retirement community.

The Duffer brothers have a strange thing for rural supernatural towns, from 1980s Hawkins, Indiana, to now, the New Mexico desert.
The Stranger Things creators are executive producing a new supernatural series for Netflix called The Boroughs. Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) are the creators and showrunners of the eight-episode drama.
“While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching,” said the Duffer brothers in a statement.

About a year and a half ago, Netflix announced they had given a series order to The Boroughs, a supernatural mystery show that’s executive produced by Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers. Now they’ve revealed the impressive cast that has been assembled for the series: Alfred Molina (Spider-Man: No Way Home) plays Sam, Geena Davis (Blink Twice) plays Renee, Alfre Woodard (Salem’s Lot) plays Judy, Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story) plays Wally, Clarke Peters plays Art, and Bill Pullman (Independence Day) plays Jack.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), who also serve as showrunners, The Boroughs has the following logline: In a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time.

Matt and Ross Duffer struck gold when they created the supernatural drama Stranger Things for Netflix. That series is set in the 1980s, a period the Duffers are clearly enamored with. The show is coming to an end with a final season to air hopefully next year, but the brothers have other irons in the fire, including a new Netflix show called The Boroughs.
The Duffers will only be involved in a producing capacity; showrunning duties will fall to Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the guys behind the canceled-too-soon series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Ben Taylor will direct several episodes including the pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
But I still see the Duffers' fingerprints all over this show, which is about "a group of unlikely heroes" living in a retirement community who must "band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don't have — time.

This Christmas, The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson presents a groundbreaking journey back to Middle-earth through the eyes of award-winning filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama.
In The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, an original anime feature being released in theaters by New Line Cinema, we'll return to Middle-earth, the iconic world previously brought to life in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, based on the revered books by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Under the direction of Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus), it's been confirmed today that the impressive voice cast is led by Brian Cox (Succession) as Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan; Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods) as his daughter Héra; and Luke Pasqualino (Snowpiercer) as Wulf.
Miranda Otto, who delivered an unforgettable, award-winning performance in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, reprises her role as Éowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan, who serves as the tale’s narrator.

Succession star Brian Cox is the voice of Helm Hammerhand, the sword-wielding King of Rohan, and Gaia Wise voices his daughter Héra, leading the resistance against a deadly enemy in the trailer for New Line Cinema’s anime prequel The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which dropped on Thursday.
Set in an epic world 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the King of Rohan is forced into a last stand in ancient Hornburg after a sudden attack by the vengeful Wulf, voiced by Luke Pasqualino.
That forces Héra to lead a brave fightback against an enemy intent on their total destruction as the Tolkien world, inspired by books by J.R.R. Tolkien, gets its first big screen heroine. “You know nothing of war,” the King of Rohan tells his daughter dismissively at one point in the teaser trailer.

More Middle-earth action awaits: Warner Bros. has released the trailer for the anime feature film “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” set to be released on Dec. 13.
Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, “The War of the Rohirrim” takes place 261 years before the epic events of “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Featuring Helm Hammerhand as the protagonist, the film is based on a story by J.R.R. Tolkien included in the appendices of “The Lord of the Rings.”
Brian Cox voices the iconic King of Rohan, while Miranda Otto, who starred in Peter Jackson’s film trilogy, returns to lend her voice to her original character Eowyn. In the new animated film, the king must defend his land against an army of Dunlendings, in an origin story revealing how the stronghold Helm’s Deep got its name.
Additional cast members include Gaia Wise, Luke Pasqualino, Laurence Ubong Williams and Shaune Dooley.

Forth Eorlingas! With The Rings Of Power's return to our screens mere days away, and Andy Serkis' intriguing The Hunt For Gollum movie looming on the horizon, Middle-earth is well and truly back on the menu. But among the projects based on J. R. R. Tolkien's legendary fantasy series heading our way, perhaps most exciting — and certainly most unique — is Lord Of The Rings: War Of The Rohirrim, Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex director Kenji Kamiyama's upcoming anime movie set two centuries before Peter Jackson's iconic trilogy. Produced by Rings veteran Phillipa Boyens alongside Jackson and Fran Walsh, Kamiyama's film stars Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand, the club-fisted King of Rohan who gave Helm's Deep its name. And if its jaw-slackening, just-dropped first trailer is anything to go by, War Of The Rohirrim will definitely live up to its name. Check it out below...

Nearly 20 years after "The Return of the King" brought the original "Lord of the Rings" trilogy to a close, fans are about to go on yet another adventure in Peter Jackson's distinctive version of Middle-earth -- and it's utterly unlike anything we've seen from this franchise before. Prime Video's "The Rings of Power" has provided a welcome return to author J.R.R. Tolkien's groundbreaking fantasy world, but the series remains otherwise unconnected to the films that most audiences consider the definitive adaptations of the source material. That all changes with "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim."

Set 183 years before the events of the original trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim transports audiences back to the epic world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary saga. The film chronicles the tale of Helm Hammerhand, the storied King of Rohan. When Wulf, a cunning and vengeful Dunlending lord, launches a surprise attack to avenge his father’s death, Helm and his people must mount a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg—later known as Helm’s Deep. Amidst these dire circumstances, Héra, Helm’s daughter, must summon the courage to lead the resistance against an enemy intent on their annihilation.

New Line’s new animated movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is moving from its April 12, 2024 release date to Dec. 13 next year.
The move stems from a chain-reaction of Warner Bros re-dating today, spurred by Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two going from Nov. 3 this year to March 15, 2024, which then pushed that financier and producer’s other title, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire from that date to April 12, 2024. Dune: Part Two had to move had to shift on account of the unavailability of its cast to promote during the actors strike.
War of the Rohirrim will now face off on its new December date against Sony’s reboot of The Karate Kid.
The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original New Line Lord of the Rings trilogy. Those Peter Jackson movies, in addition to his Hobbit trilogy,...

Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed they are executive producers of a new Netflix series, The Boroughs. The brothers are currently working on Stranger Things season 5, which will see the popular supernatural series come to a close. In addition, they are working to create more shows in the same universe, including an animated series and a live-action spinoff.

The Duffer Brothers are staying strong at Netflix with a new supernatural series. But instead of teenagers leading the narrative, a group of senior citizens will make up The Boroughs. Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), the mystery series is set in a seemingly idyllic retirement community, where an unlikely group of residents team up to thwart an otherworldly force threatening their livelihood. The premise sounds like a more sinister Cocoon, and we all know how much the Duffers and even Addiss and Matthews love '80s references. As we wait for more updates on the show’s production, here’s everything we know about The Boroughs so far.

After the huge success of "Stranger Things," it's no surprise Netflix would want to stay in business with the Duffer Brothers. And as that show heads toward its highly anticipated conclusion, the duo is revving up future projects for the streamer.
When Netflix signed Matt and Ross Duffer to a nine-figure deal last year, one of the projects they were attached to was a mysterious science fiction series from creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the guys behind Netflix's beloved, canceled-too-soon fantasy epic "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance." Today, we finally have more information about that project.
The eight-episode series is called "The Boroughs," and it sounds like it could be tonally similar to "Stranger Things" despite having a completely different setting and group of characters. Here's the official logline:
