Tom Cruise, undoubtedly, continues to be one of the biggest enigmas in Hollywood. Arguably the biggest action star and one of the leading lights in Hollywood, the actor has given us some truly wonderful projects.
Yet, he remains without an Academy Award. The same has been brought to light by Léa Seydoux, star of James Bond’s Spectre and No Time to Die. Seydoux, while appearing on Konbini, expressed her admiration for Cruise’s diverse talent and lamented his lack of recognition from the Oscars.

Update: Not having read Josh Brolin’s recently published memoir, I am unsure how much of a poker player the No Country for Old Men actor is. However, after raising the Academy with the threat that he would retire from acting if Denis Villeneuve was not nominated for Best Director for Dune: Part Two, the actor may have had his bluff called, as the filmmaker was not called during this morning’s nomination announcement for the 97th Academy Awards.
With it time to show his hand, Josh Brolin has not yet revealed if he was being hyperbolic or if his time as Gurney Halleck has ended. Brolin has had a storied career on the big screen and may not be quite ready to throw in the towel yet, but we will have to see if he makes any comments on his social media accounts in the coming days.

Denis Villeneuve has pulled off a rare feat with Dune: Part Two, making a sequel that surpasses the first film. The director continues his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, bringing back Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Josh Brolin. This time, they’re joined by Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, and Léa Seydoux.
The movie feels larger and more personal, blending thrilling action with deep emotion. Villeneuve has created a film that’s both visually stunning and emotionally gripping.
Talking to TheWrap, Villeneuve revealed that he wanted to ramp up the action in this installment. He explained that Part One focused on a young boy discovering a new world, but Part Two follows his transformation into a leader, with more intense and fast-paced scenes.
The first Dune movie in 2021 was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won six, including Best Cinematography, Production Design, Score, and Visual Effects. It’s...

With “Dune: Part Two,” director Denis Villeneuve did the unthinkable. He made a Hollywood sequel — really, the second part of his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s influential 1965 novel — that was more satisfying than the first. Everyone returned to the desert planet Arrakis, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Josh Brolin, this time joined by new characters played by Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux.
The movie feels both bigger and more intimate than before, full of action and just as much emotion. It’s a more complicated, nuanced piece of machinery from one of our most talented filmmakers and one of the more riveting big-screen spectacles of the year.

Dune and Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has stated that he has no intention of helming any more movies in the franchise after his planned Dune: Messiah adaptation, but that doesn't mean Warner Bros. will stop making them!
According to scooper Daniel Richtman (and backed up by a report from World of Reel), the studio is planning to move forward with at least one more Dune movie and a second TV series.
HBO's Dune: Prophecy was not as acclaimed as the films, but it reportedly did pretty well from a viewership standpoint.
The first two movies were big successes, but a fourth chapter would still be somewhat surprising given the direction Frank Herbert's saga goes in after the second book. Villeneuve has shown little interest in adapting the later novels, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune, as he feels the story starts to become too "esoteric.

If 2024 were a movie, it would likely be a slow burn. Between studio strikes, diminishing theater releases, and a yearlong debate about whether AI is a creative savior or the devil’s intern, it seemed like the film industries of the world had traded their mojo for mediocrity.

James Bond romanced dozens of Bond Girls in the 25 James Bond movies, but some Bond Girls were villainous henchwomen out to kill 007. Evil Bond Girls are as much a staple of the 007 franchise as vodka martinis, Bond's Aston Martin DB5, and the many women who were James Bond's lovers in his various films. In some cases, evil Bond Girls tried to execute James after they slept with him.
Interestingly, two versions of James Bond didn't face outright homicidal Bond Girls. Timothy Dalton's two Bond movies, The Living Daylights (1987) and License to Kill (1989), lacked Bond Girls who were dedicated to murdering 007. Daniel Craig's James Bond movies introduced several Bond Girls, including the iconic Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) in Casino Royale (2006) and the underrated Dr. Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux) in Spectre (2015) and No Time To Die (2021), but Craig's 007 also didn't battle malevolent Bond Girls out to end his life.

When Amazon acquired MGM, it gained not only a legendary Hollywood studio but also its most prized asset: the James Bond franchise. MGM has held the distribution rights to the Bond films since purchasing United Artists, the original distributor of Dr. No, back in 1981. With this acquisition, Amazon also inherited MGM’s longstanding partnership with Eon Productions, the studio behind nearly every Bond film since 1962.
At the helm of Eon and the Bond franchise is Barbara Broccoli, who has consistently asserted her authority over the franchise. Now, according to recent reports, tensions are brewing between Broccoli and Amazon, potentially jeopardizing the future of 007 after Daniel Craig’s departure from the lead role.
A Wall Street Journal article sheds light on the friction. Broccoli — who, love or hate her creative decisions, is undeniably the foremost expert in crafting Bond films — is reportedly less than thrilled with Amazon’s involvement. Her...

One of the most stunning sequences in Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi spectacle “Dune: Part Two” wasn’t achieved through visual effects, but by a mere camera trick. Albeit one that Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser had been toying with for years.
While the majority of the franchise takes place on the desert planet Arrakis, “Dune: Part Two” makes a detour to the home planet of House Harkonnen to introduce Austin Butler’s twisted villain Feyd-Rautha in a violent, striking arena fight. Right off the bat, everything looks alien – the color is washed out, and the black-and-white visuals are deep and disturbing. Daniel Craig may have been a controversial choice when he was first cast as 007, but several of his James Bond movies received immense critical acclaim. Craig appeared as a young and reckless James Bond in 2006's Casino Royale. Craig's first movie as 007 is often regarded as one of the best James Bond movies, and proved that he would be exceptional in the role. After Casino Royale, Craig ended up starring in four more James Bond movies.
2008's Quantum of Solace was negatively impacted by the Writers Guild of America strike, and was therefore not as well-received. However, the James Bond franchise made a comeback with 2012's Skyfall, which was heavily praised for its deeply personal story about the titular spy. After Skyfall, Craig also starred as 007 in 2015's Spectre before concluding his run as James Bond in 2021's No Time to Die.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Each year offers some important movie-going lessons, and 2024 was no exception. Buy tickets early when taking kids to see Wicked. Never count out Mike Leigh, George Miller, or Clint Eastwood. Bow to Francis Ford Coppola, whether you enjoy Megalopolis or not. Start reappreciating Demi Moore and Nicole Kidman. Stop watching Alien: Romulus before the ending.
And, of course, choose your Uber driver carefully; on my way to my first screening at September’s Toronto International Film Festival, mine raced through a stop sign, got pulled over, and made me miss the one press screening of The Brutalist. (I’m still stewing over that.)
Now, to my list of 2024 favorites; read on to see if I eventually caught up with Brady Corbet’s film.

Every year, movie fans around the world engage in a familiar ritual -- the ranking of our favorite films of the year. The comedy genre underwent a lot of change in the 2010s, and the roles of villains started to shift too. As opposed to the optimistic, broad comedies that dominated the 2000s, many of the best comedy movies of the 2010s are rather dark and cynical. This change meant that a lot of comedies went without villains in the 2010s, choosing to explore anti-heroes, villain protagonists, or stories without clear man vs. man conflict.
Despite the changes in the comedy genre, there are still some great villains from the 2010s who stand out. In some cases, these villains aren't supposed to be funny, but they create tension and conflict which brings the best out of the hero. The days of Dr. Evil, White Goodman and Jacobim Mugatu faded before the 2010s, but the decade still produced a few hilarious movie villains.

We recently learned that acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is set to helm a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' controversial 1991 novel American Psycho for Lionsgate, and the project has now found its lead.
According to Variety, Austin Butler has been cast as yuppie serial killer Patrick Bateman.
The script, which was penned by Scott Z. Burns, is said to be a brand-new interpretation of the book and not a remake of the 2000 film starring Christian Bale.
The story focuses on “A wealthy New York City investment banking executive who hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.”
The book was deemed so disturbing and graphic in its depictions of violence that it ended up being censored and even banned outright (temporarily) in multiple countries.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures’ Dune: Part Two, the anticipated follow-up to 2021’s six-time Oscar-winning Dune. Denis Villeneuve directed from a screenplay he and Jon Spaihts wrote based on Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel.
The first film’s writing team of Spaihts, Villeneuve and Eric Roth were nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, making expectations high for sequel, which has delivered, grossing $714 million worldwide since its global release in March.
Set thousands of years in the future and picking up where Dune left off, Dune: Part Two again follows the mythic journey of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a young man propelled by fate into an intergalactic power struggle. Austin Butler is looking to get a little crazy in Luca Guadagnino’s “American Psycho” remake.
Butler, who has made his career working with auteurs such as Baz Luhrmann, Denis Villeneuve, Ari Aster, Darren Aronofsky, and Jeff Nichols, might have his Guadagnino debut with the upcoming feature. Variety reported that Butler is in talks to star as the iconic Patrick Bateman in Guadagnino’s reimagining of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel.
IndieWire has learned that there are no casting deals are in place, however.
The Lionsgate film was announced earlier this year, with Scott Z. Burns adapting the novel for the screen.
Christian Bale led the original 2000 film alongside Guadagnino’s frequent collaborator Chloë Sevigny; Mary Harron co-wrote and directed the classic feature. Guadagnino’s version will not be a remake of Harron’s but rather a new adaptation of Ellis’ book.

Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve recently shared a positive update on Warner Bros.' plans for a third movie, confirming that the script for an adaptation of Dune: Messiah is officially in the works.
Villeneuve also confirmed (though it really didn't come as much of a surprise) that Anya Taylor-Joy will return as Alia Atreides following her brief cameo in the last movie.
In Part One, we learn that Paul Atreides' mother, the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica, is pregnant with the late Duke Leto's child. When the Fremen take in the survivors of the Harkonnen massacre, Jessica agrees to become the tribe's new Reverend Mother (she isn't really given a choice) and is "persuaded" to drink the Water of Life (a blue substance that's been extracted from a juvenile sandworm).

Now that we at IndieWire have landed on the best movies and TV shows of the year, it’s time to break down those cumulative artistic endeavors into their magnificent individual parts — starting, as is customary, with the best performances on either screen in 2024.
Awards season has a way of winnowing a year’s worth of meaningful work down to a handful of popular picks, and within those ongoing races rests a number of fascinating turns. The “Sing Sing” cast is driving conversations and getting their due, cumulatively and individually. Nicholas Hoult has no less than three performances worth discussing — after its truncated theatrical run, will “Juror No. 2” qualify for Emmys? I’m kidding, I hope — and it’s literally never a bad time to talk about Denzel Washington. Speaking of TV, Ted Danson and Cristin Milioti can’t be denied, while the “Baby Reindeer” troupe may continue collecting trophies well into the new year.

“A cinematographer is a visual psychiatrist–moving an audience through a movie […] making them think the way you want them to think, painting pictures in the dark,” said the late, great Gordon Willis. As our year-end coverage continues, we must pay dues. From talented newcomers to seasoned professionals, we’ve rounded up the examples that have most impressed us this year.

Dune and Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has often mentioned that he is (or was) a huge Star Wars fan, and has even suggested that George Lucas' original trilogy was an early influence on his decision to pursue a career as a filmmaker.
Despite his love for the franchise, Villeneuve has now explained why he has no interest in directing a movie set in the galaxy far, far away.
While chatting to The Town Podcast, Villeneuve said directing a Star Wars movie simply isn't "a dream of his" because "Star Wars became crystallized in its own mythology, very dogmatic, it seemed like a recipe, no more surprises."
He also feels that Return of the Jedi derailed the franchise back in 1983.
“I was the target audience. I was 10 years old. It went to my brain like a silver bullet. I became obsessed with Star Wars. I mean, The Empire Strikes Back...

Despite the first Dune movie picking up a nomination for Best Picture at the 2022 Academy Awards, Denis Villeneuve was not nominated for Best Director. Understandably, this didn't sit very well with a lot of people - including star Josh Brolin.
Brolin, who played loyal Atreides War Master Gurney Halleck in both movies, was very vocal about Villeneuve being overlooked the first time, and is even more adamant that the filmmaker should be recognized by the Academy for his work on recent sequel, Dune: Part Two.
“If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting,” Brolin tells Variety. “It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.”

Omar Apollo may have made his acting debut with “Queer,” but he’s not limiting his collaborations with Luca Guadagnino at just feature films: The duo have reunited for music video “Te Maldigo,” which Apollo announced as a partnership with A24.
The song also brings Grammy-nominated Apollo back with “Queer” composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who also collaborated with Guadagnino on the “Challengers” score.
The video brings audiences into the underground bar scene that “Queer” encapsulates. The video, like the feature, is set in Mexico City post-wwii. Apollo sings onstage in the short film, which debuted at midnight on November 21.
Produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who composed the score for the film, “Te Maldigo” is Apollo’s first song entirely in Spanish since 2022’s “En El Olvido.” The track is the first single from Apollo’s sophomore album “God Said No,” which was released in May 2024.

Luca Guadagnino and Daniel Craig might have another novel adaptation in the works after collaborating together on “Queer.” But this rumored adaptation isn’t Burroughs; it’s actually a comic book.
According to a Deadline report, auteur Guadagnino and lead star Craig are in talks to bring DC Studios’ “Sgt. Rock” to the screen. Deadline noted that no deals have been confirmed between DC Studios, Craig, or Guadagnino. DC Studios did not respond to a request for comment.
The character of Sgt. Franklin John Rock, assumed to be played by Craig given the report, was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert for the 1959 DC issue, “Our Army at War.” Like Craig’s “Queer” character, Rock is a WWII veteran. Rock landed his own comic book series, which ran from 1977 to 1988.

What's your favorite romantic movie, the one that moves you to tears, be they of happiness or sorrow? Perhaps it's Leo McCarey's four-hankie 1939 weeper "Love Affair" starring Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne, or maybe it's McCarey's own remake "An Affair to Remember" lead by the insanely photogenic likes of Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. And then there's Nora Ephron's rom-com riff on those films, "Sleepless in Seattle" toplined by Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Prefer a good ugly cry? Arthur Hiller's "Love Story" and that Francis Lai score will mug it out of you as Ryan O'Neal loses the love of his life in Ali MacGraw. In the mood for a good emotional scalding? Bernardo Bertolucci's "Last Tango in Paris" will leave you stunned and in the mood for anything but love.

When it comes to adapting video games into movies, fans are often ready to get disappointed. But with the upcoming Death Stranding adaptation with A24 and Hideo Kojima partnering together, maybe there is reason to hope. And as you’d expect, fans have started thinking of which actors will be a part of it.

One Reddit fan made a good joke about it by humorously re-casting the upcoming movie with its original game cast. What started as a tongue-in-cheek meme quickly became a celebration of the original cast. It’s no surprise, considering the characters’ profound connections to their respective actors.

Josh O’Connor has been recruited for Steven Spielberg’s new film, The Dish, as the ensemble continues to grow.
The cast for Steven Spielberg’s next film continues to expand, with the ensemble sounding more impressive with each new name. Although his involvement was rumoured a while back, it has now been confirmed (via Deadline) that Josh O’Connor has joined the cast of the project, which is believed to be titled The Dish.
Ever since news of the project first broke back in April of this year, the buzz surrounding Spielberg’s next film has it pegged as a UFO movie, returning the filmmaker to the backdrop which he reshaped several times with films like E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and then years later, War of The Worlds.
O’Connor joins an impressive ensemble that already includes Colman Domingo, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Eve Hewson.

It’s hard to imagine Tom Cruise saying goodbye to Ethan Hunt, the character he’s dutifully portrayed since 1996’s Mission: Impossible. But the teaser for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which dropped today, sure makes it seem like the end of the road for a character that’s outlasted countless crises, two James Bonds, and five presidential administrations.

Over the years, former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dave Bautista has made an even bigger name for himself as an action movie star. Although he had a slow start in Hollywood, "appearing in a couple of pride-swallowing direct-to-dvd movies" (Via British GQ), he is currently one of the best wrestlers-turned-actors in Hollywood. While other WWE wrestlers have made the jump to acting, Bautista is arguably the most naturally talented and nuanced as a true actor.
Dave Bautista's action movies bring a charming balance of fight sequences choreographed to highlight his physical prowess and character work that highlights his acting skills, giving him a compelling screen presence. Dave Bautista's roster of movies now boasts works with critically acclaimed directors like Denis Villeneuve and James Gunn, with his most popular character, the McU's Drax, coming to life during work with the latter.

There’s always the high-wire act, an exchange-and-trade, attending festivals in enviable parts of the world. Some locations only offer too much joy at the opportunity to kill time with a directorial debut that will never be seen outside these confines. Others are enough to chafe against entire concepts of cinephilia, to engender soul-searching questions such as, “Am I really neglecting this city and culture to watch an ethnographic ‘docufiction’ of 16mm shots of flora and fauna scored by creaky sounds?”
Such questions shaped my trip to Tokyo, likely a dream destination for nearly any cinephile. It’s not only through the Tokyo International Film Festival’s invite that I could see films, attend events, and have enlightening conversations but––after a lifetime of “visiting” the city through mediated images––actually walk its streets, try its cuisines, experience its infamous subways. If not all selections seen over the course of...

Well, at least Hideo Kojima agrees with Quentin Tarantino: “Joker: Folie à Deux” just might be considered the film of the year…in a decade or two.
The “Death Stranding” video game creator Kojima praised Todd Phillips’ critically panned box-office disaster sequel on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying that in the next 10 to 20 years, “Joker: Folie à Deux” could be considered a classic film.
“Over the next 10 or 20 years, this film’s reputation will likely change along with the permeation of hero movies to come. It may take some time for it to become a true ‘folie à deux,’” Kojima wrote. “But there is no doubt that everyone in the audience loved Joaquin and Gaga in this film.”
Kojima’s full statement is as follows:
“I watched ‘Joker: Folie à Deux.’ The beginning of the film is an animation sequence, reminiscent of the nostalgic ‘Looney Tunes,’ depicting a...

Sci-fi movies make up one of Hollywood's biggest markets, and there are many exciting releases to look forward to in 2024. The best sci-fi movies allow viewers to explore vast and imaginative worlds, providing a sense of escapism. 2023 saw several successful sci-fi movies debut, from franchise installments like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to the original film The Creator. 2024 has already had an upward trend for the genre, with far more releases slated.
2024 will or has already seen book adaptations, video game adaptations, original sci-fi films, and the return of major franchises like Alien, Planet of the Apes, Godzilla, and Mad Max. These movies are set to be directed by some of the best talent in the film industry, including Denis Villeneuve. However, many 2024 movies have been delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. While many of 2024's films ended up set, several were pushed back again. Nevertheless, 2024's sci-fi lineup...

The French director Bertrand Bonello, whose science-fiction drama “The Beast” played in competition at Venice last year, is sitting in the sunshine in medieval Lucca, dressed in white and thinking of the future. He’s speaking to Variety about what he’s learned from the film, which screened this week at Lucca Comics and Games, how cinema is changing and artificial intelligence.
“The Beast” is set in Paris in 2044 when AI reigns supreme. In such a technologically regulated society, human emotions have become a threat, and to get rid of them, Gabrielle must purify her DNA by going back into her past lives. There, she reunites with Louis, her great love. But she’s overcome by fear, a premonition that catastrophe is on the way.
Lea Seydoux plays Gabrielle, while George MacKay is Louis. The film is based on the novella “The Beast in the Jungle” by Henry James.

Producers and distributors heading to Las Vegas for this year’s American Film Market, which runs Nov. 5-10, are betting big that indie action is primed for a comeback.
The AFM was built on action movies — the leading independent film bazaar launched in 1981 at the start of a decade defined by the cinematic stylings of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steven Segal, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. But in recent markets, with the headline-grabbing success of breakouts like Neon’s Longlegs and Cineverse’s Terrifier 3, action has taken a backseat to horror.
There will be scares-a-plenty at AFM 2024, but many of the market’s buzziest projects sit squarely in the action space. Even a few that don’t star Liam Neeson, Gerard Butler, Jason Statham or Nic Cage. How buyers respond to this new generation of would-be action stars — Daisy Ridley, Amber Midthunder, Alan Ritchson — will determine who...

Favorite long-term celebrity couples like Ryan Gosling-Eva Mendes, David and Victorian Beckham, Ryan Reynolds-Blake Lively, and Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn make us believe in love for their enduring commitment and the rose-tinted view they allow us to have into their personal lives. But such relationships have always been a double-edged sword for the parties involved.
For high-profile couples like Channing Tatum and Zoë Kravitz, the drama exceeds far beyond the actors themselves, breaking the hearts of fans mourning the end of a so-called “perfect” relationship.

Following up Sasquatch Sunset, it was announced the Zellner Brothers would embark on the alien invasion comedy Alpha Gang led by Cate Blanchett. They’ve now amassed quite an ensemble, with Dave Bautista, Steven Yeun, Zoë Kravitz, Léa Seydoux, Riley Keough, and Channing Tatum all coming aboard the project, Deadline reports. Here’s the synopsis: Alpha Gang centers on a group of alien invaders sent to conquer Earth. Disguised in human form as a 1950s leather-clad biker gang, dubbed the Alpha Gang. They are ruthless in their mission, until they succumb to the most toxic and contagious human condition of all: emotions.”

David and Nathan Zellner’s upcoming alien invasion comedy Alpha Gang adds Channing Tatum, Lea Seydoux, Dave Bautista, Channing Tatum and more.
Channing Tatum, Dave Bautista, Zoë Kravitz, Léa Seydoux, and Riley Keough have joined the already announced Cate Blanchett and Steven Yeun for Alpha Gang, forming one of most fun ensembles we’ve seen in a while. The alien invasion comedy hails from Sasquatch Sunset directors David and Nathan Zellner and will go up for sale at next month’s American Film Market.
With so many brilliant names attached to it, we can’t see the film having too many problems being snapped up and following that, production is set to get underway in the spring. The story sounds really fun: ‘taking place in the 1950s, it follows a group of alien invaders as they pretend to be a leather-clad biker gang. Blanchett, who also produces, will play the gang’s leader.
