Ahead of season 7 part 2’s premiere, it was revealed that several major characters from the past seasons were set to return in Outlander, including Jenny Murray, who was last seen in season 3. Part of the reason behind the Lallybroch matriarch’s prolonged absence was Laura Donnelly’s commitment to other projects, including HBO’s The Nevers and multiple Broadway shows.

As for her replacement, Kristin Atherton, who was originally in the run for the character prior to Donnelly’s casting, hasn’t quite cut it as Jenny for some fans.

The theater pieces that resonated most this year were stories of communal, collective healing—not quite feel-good but feel-connected. Curiously, several of the shows on this list staged emotional scenes of family reunifications. Seeking patterns as a critic, it’s tricky to separate the personal emotional response from trends in theatermaking, but it seems like audiences wanted catharsis in the theater in 2024. That was especially true for something like City Center’s Ragtime, which offered both an emotional indictment and hopeful vision of the nation that audiences sought out in the days following the election.

Laura Donnelly did not return as Jenny in Outlander Season 7 and was confusingly recast heading into the latest batch of episodes.
After appearing in the first three seasons of the hits Starz romance, Jenny Murray is back in Season 7, coming into the picture again as the show's central couple returns to Scotland after several seasons overseas.
Jenny is a Scottish Highlander and the matriarch of the Murray clan. Since fans last saw her, her husband, Ian Murray, tragically died, leaving the longtime Outlander character to fend for herself.

Fellow Outlander fans, we are back, Finally! It has been a literal eternity (or since August 2023) since we have been in the world of the Frasers, but I am so happy to be back!
The premiere episode of Season 7B had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish, and certainly threw me for a loop at many points. There is simply so much to discuss and unravel, and I can't wait to dive right into it.
However, before doing that, here is a very quick recap of where we left things when Outlander Season 7A ended: in the midst of the American Revolutionary War, Jamie (Sam Heughan), Claire (Caitriona Balfe), and Ian (John Hunter Bell) returned to Scotland after Jamie was tasked with bringing the body of Simon Fraser to his Scottish homeland. It doesn't feel like that this trip to Scotland is meant to be permanent,...

The poet Robert Frost wrote: “Home is the place where, when you have to go there/ they have to take you in.” Unfortunately for Outlander‘s Jamie Fraser, Frost didn’t say anything about getting back into Jenny Fraser Murray’s good graces once you get there.

Outlander returns in just a couple days for the second half of its seventh season, over a year after part 1 wrapped up. You might look at that long wait and conclude that this is effectively season 8, but they're calling it season 7, part 2, so let's just run with it.
When last we left them, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) were returning to Jamie's native Scotland, with Young Ian (John Bell) in tow. That means they'll be reuniting with characters fans haven't seen in a while, including Young Ian's father, appropriately named Old Ian Murray. Actor Steven Cree, who hasn't played Old Ian since season 4, talked to the Daily Record about what it was like to be back on the show.

It's time to chat with two of our personal fan-favorite actors and characters, John Bell and Charles Vandervaart! Of course we know Bell as the lovable Young Ian, who is finally coming back home to Scotland when Outlander season 7 part 2 picks up, and sees his parents for the first time in almost 10 years!
Then there's William, who Vandervaart teases will be on a difficult path in season 7B as there's discoveries made, making him lose his sense of identity. Ooh! The two actors provide even more teases in Show Snob's exclusive interview with the two, which you can watch or read below. Plus, make sure to scroll down to the end of the post for more Outlander interviews with the actors and executive producers.

Hulu’s FX-produced limited series Say Nothing, like its source book by Patrick Radden Keefe, takes its name from the striking 1975 poem “Whatever You Say, Say Nothing,” by Seamus Heaney.
It’s a sad and angry piece that looks at the unfolding tragedy of the Troubles, critiquing simultaneously the culture of enforced silence that repressed free speech within Northern Ireland and the voyeuristic instincts of the outside media covering “the Irish thing.” The poem is dazzlingly focused on speech and storytelling, the power and limitations of words in contrast to what Heaney refers to as “Northern reticence, the tight gag of place / And times.”
Keefe’s mission, and the mission of Say Nothing creator Joshua Zetumer (RoboCop, the 2014 one), is to break through the silence. To use a different metaphor, it’s about the disinfecting power of sunlight. It’s also a chronicle of Northern Ireland reported on by...

He’s joined by co-star Sophie Skelton to promote the highly anticipated return of the fantasy romance saga next month. For our recent webchat he adds, “The fans out there might have an idea of what’s going to happen, but I think we’re going to throw a hell of a lot more on top of that. It’s a very unexpected journey for all of our heroes. I really think people are going to love it.” Watch our video interview above.

Last month playwright Jez Butterworth brought his latest work, “The Hills of California,” to Broadway. The haunting family drama explores the relationships between four sisters and their dying mother in their creaky seaside home, seamlessly moving back and forth in time between 1976 and 1955. The play previously bowed in London earlier this year, and before coming stateside it earned two Olivier Award nominations for Best New Play and Best Actress for Laura Donnelly, who reprises her performance in New York.
Since his Broadway debut only 13 years ago, Butterworth has quickly established himself as one of the theater’s most accomplished contemporary playwrights. He has two Tony nominations to his name, for New York debut “Jerusalem” in 2011 and for his Tony-winning epic “The Ferryman” in 2019. Those nominations alone already tie him with theater royalty including Ayad Akhtar, Tony Kushner, Tracy Letts, David Mamet, Lynn Nottage, Eugene O’Neill, and Wendy Wasserstein — all...

Werewolf By Night, Marvel Studios' first ever Special presentation, debuted on Disney+ in 2022, and opened the door to a whole new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that's yet to be further explored.
The black-and-white Halloween Special really was a first for the franchise, paying homage to the classic Universal monster movies with its noirish style, creepy atmosphere and heightened levels of violence.
Werewolf By Night introduced several new characters such as Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) Ted, aka Man-Thing (Carey Jones), and the titular lycanthrope himself, Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), and fans have been eager for an update on their potential return.
Director Michael Giacchino previously confirmed that discussions about doing more with the characters have taken place, but it sounds like any plans for a follow-up episode have been put on the back-burner.

In an era dominated by larger-than-life superhero flicks, sometimes a change of pace works like a charm. Marvel Studios learnt that with its first ever special, Werewolf by Night, a 53-minute long movie (some believe that it borders between the idea of a movie and a show).
Starring the likes of Gael Garcia Bernal, Laura Donnelly, Kirk Thatcher, and Harriet Sansom Harris, the special was held in high regard by both fans and critics. Given its reception, it did not come as a surprise that people want more of it. And director Michael Giacchino might have the positive update all of us were waiting for.

“I can’t bear it,” Emily Webb mourns in the final minutes of Our Town, spectrally revisiting childhood scenes of her family after she’s been laid to rest. “They’re so young and beautiful. Why did they ever have to get old?” The unendurable passage of time haunts not only Kenny Leon’s wispy but lovely production of Thornton Wilder’s American epic (the fifth Broadway revival since its original 1938 run), but also a new spellbinding play recently arrived from London, Jez Butterworth’s The Hills of California.
If Wilder, in eschewing the use of scenery and most props in Our Town, was an early minimalist, Butterworth imagines his worlds on a maximalist scale. His last Broadway play, the thunderously searing The Ferryman, featured a live goose, rabbit, and baby on stage. And though The Hills of California has no animals to speak of, it has a beast of a set from Rob Howell,...

Outlander just marked a major milestone. On August 9, the steamy period drama celebrated the 10th anniversary of its series premiere.
The Starz show follows the epic romance between Claire (Caitriona Balfe), a time-traveling doctor from the mid-20th century, and Jamie (Sam Heughan) a dashing Highlander from the 18th century. Over the past decades, fans have followed Jamie, Claire, and their family and friends as they crisscrossed the globe and hopped through time, from Scotland to France to the American Colonies and beyond. Over time, plenty has changed for the couple. But their love hasn’t diminished. Instead, it’s grown stronger.
‘Outlander’ star Sam Heughan says Jamie and Claire’s relationship has grown ‘deeper’ since season 1 Jamie and Claire in ‘Outlander’ Season 1 | Starz

Werewolf by Night was a fun departure from typical Marvel fare, with a black-and-white presentation that felt inspired by Universal Monsters and Hammer Horror, but will we ever see these characters again? Nothing has been announced regarding a sequel or follow-up to Werewolf by Night, but director Michael Giacchino told Collider that he has plenty of ideas for more if and when Marvel comes calling.
“There’s always talk,” Michael Giacchino said. “But, you know, until somebody decides to spend a penny, nothing happens yet. So, hopefully. My wish is that, yes, there will be more with these characters. I would love to, and I have ideas of what I would love to do with them, and it’s all crazy and nuts, but I think that’s the only way to go about it. So, hopefully, one day. Hopefully, one day.“

"More terrifying, more gruesome, all in color." Marvel Studios has unveiled a brand new 2023 trailer for their spin-off Halloween "Special Presentation" event called Werewolf by Night. It initially debuted last year during October as a one-off, one-hour-long B&w horror film from Marvel, directed by famed composer Michael Giacchino. It's now being re-released fully in color in 2023 (as "Werewolf by Night in Color"). The special stars the wonderfully talented actor Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, a lycanthrope superhero who fights crime using the abilities given to him by a curse brought on by his bloodline. The great cast also includes Laura Donnelly, Harriet Sansom Harris, Eugenie Bondurant, & Kirk R. Thatcher. The film introduces a whole bunch of new monsters from the Marvel universe, most notably the big lovable tree monster "Man-Thing" aka "Ted". I thought it played just fine in B&w last year, but I guess I'll watch it again in color this year.

Last year, Marvel and Disney+ released the very cool creature feature Halloween special Werewolf by Night (you can read our 8/10 review Here), which was presented in black & white as a throwback to the Universal Monsters classics. They don’t have a new Halloween special for us this year, but they will be celebrating the holiday by releasing a colorized presentation of Werewolf by Night – appropriately called Werewolf by Night: In Color. This version of the special is set to begin streaming on Disney+ on October 20th, and one week out from that premiere date a trailer has arrived online to give a preview of what Werewolf by Night looks like in color. According to the promo, color makes it all more terrifying and more gruesome.
Composer Michael Giacchino directed Werewolf by Night, working from a script by Heather Quinn and Peter Cameron. The special has the following synopsis: On a dark and somber night,...

Jamie and Claire are headed back to Scotland in the second half of Outlander Season 7. But their return to the country where they fell in love won’t go as they expect, executive producer Maril Davis has said.
Jamie and Claire return to Scotland in ‘Outlander’ Season 7
The past several seasons of Outlander have followed Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) as they build their life in colonial America. But in the Season 7 Part 1 finale, the couple found themselves on a ship bound for Scotland. They’ve been tasked with returning the body of Jamie’s cousin, General Simon Fraser (Angus Macfadyen), who died at the Second Battle of Saratoga in 1777, to his native land.
In America, the Frasers had been pulled into the Revolutionary War, and the conflict disrupted their earlier plans to sail for Scotland when Jamie was conscripted into the Continental Army. There’s a sense...

One of Marvel‘s best offerings in years is returning to Disney+ this October, just in time for Halloween! The howlingly good Werewolf By Night barks at the moon again on October 20 with a colorized version of Jack Russell’s pulpy monster-filled adventure.
In addition to introducing MCU fans to Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), Werewolf By Night features Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly), a deadly monster hunter ripped from the pages of Marvel Comics. In September of 2022, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said Jack Russell “will ultimately become quite important to the future of the MCU.” Still, with Marvel’s steaming slate under scrutiny after the studio said it’s pulling back on the reigns of streaming content, the werewolf’s future remains a mystery.
Many fans would jump at the chance for more full-moon shenanigans with Jack Russell, and Donnelly is game to return as Elsa Bloodstone, too. Speaking...

Never a dull moment for the Frasers. Thankfully, the wait is almost over. Season 7 premieres on Starz on June 16. If you at all care about Outlander‘s Jamie and/or Claire Fraser, we strongly recommend watching until the very end of the show’s new Season 7 trailer.

“Outlander” is giving fans a little more time before they have to say goodbye — and giving subscribers more of a reason to sign up for a full year instead of just a few months. Season 7 of the time-travel romance will air in two parts, Starz said on Wednesday, with the first half airing this year and the second half waiting for 2024.
Season 7, as previously announced, consists of 16 episodes, the show’s highest order count since Season 1. Like Season 1, which aired in 2014 and 2015, Season 7 will be split into two eight-episode bunches — the “Droughtlander” is officially over on June 16. “Outlander” has already been renewed for a final Season 8, which will consist of 10 episodes and presumably air in 2025 or later.
It is currently unclear if the show, based on Diana Gabaldon’s series of historical-fantasy romance novels, will completely adapt the entire saga. Each season of “Outlander” thus far has adapted (roughly) one...

"Werewolf by Night" really stood out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a single hour based on the comic book character of the same name and was (sort of) a first shot across the bow for the idea of a special rather than a series or a full-length feature film. It was followed by a presentation connected to the main MCU, "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special."
Of course, Marvel has done something akin to this before in the form of 3- to 15-minute short films called One Shots that align with their features like "All Hail the King" and "Agent Carter" which went with "Iron Man 3" and "The Consultant" that was spawned by "Thor." "Werewolf by Night," however, was more in the style of holiday specials like the animated "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" from 1966 that used to air on television around Halloween.

Set in Victorian London, The Nevers follows a group of people, mostly women, known as the Touched, who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities. Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), a mysterious and quick-fisted widow, and her best friend Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), a brilliant inventor. The series was created by Joss Whedon, who departed halfway through its production and was replaced by Philippa Goslett.

The Nevers is coming to Tubi today. Viewers will see all 12 episodes of the first season air in rotation on the streaming service after their initial airing. Unfortunately, they aren't available on-demand so one has to watch them "live". Production on The Nevers was shut down several times due to the pandemic. The historical sci-fi series debuted on HBO in April 2021 and aired for six episodes. The Nevers is set against the backdrop of Victorian London in August of 1896. During that time, a supernatural event rocks the city and leaves specific individuals bestowed with special abilities ranging from “wondrous to disturbing.” Their abilities are referred to as “turns,” and these gifted humans are pushed into a new underclass filled with danger. When it becomes clear this new class needs protection, widow Amalia True (Outlander‘s Laura Donnelly) and young inventor Penance Adair (Vikings‘ Ann Skelly) take it upon themselves. Put on your kilts and break out the bagpipes in mourning: “Outlander” is coming to an end. The hit Starz TV series has been renewed for an eighth and final season, the premium cable channel announced Thursday. The news comes ahead of Season 7 of the series, which will premiere in Summer 2023.
The news makes it unclear if the show, which is based Diana Gabaldon’s series of historical fantasy romance novels, will adapt the most recent installment, 2021’s “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.” Each season of “Outlander” has thus far roughly adapted one book in the series, with the upcoming seventh season set to cover 2009’s “An Echo in the Bone” and Season 8 presumably covering 2014’s “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.” That said, Season 7 is set to have an extended 16-episode run, while Season 8 will consist of 10 episodes, so its possible that longer length can help cover all three books.
