We know that geeks work at Nasa. This isn't new. I suspect many of them started working there due to some lasting impression Star Trek gave them as a child. Did you know that many of them are browncoats, too? When naming their new International Space Station node, they're taking their cues from Joss Whedon's Firefly.
Fans can vote online on what the name of the 3rd node is going to be, but that just sounds like a formality. Knowing the number of rabid Whedonites lurking around the interwebs, they had to know that "Serenity" would decimate the poll. They got a movie made. You think they can't get a space node named? Psch.
This, of course, continues the tradition of naming real-life scientific accomplishments after sci-fi names. Remember, the first ever Space Shuttle built for Nasa in 1974 was renamed Enterprise to honor Star Trek. This is our modern equivalent.
