Foster is a medical doctor and writer who graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1995. He went to school with pediatrician Neal Baer, who had become executive producer of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Foster was on staff at at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Harvard School of Public Health. Many ideas for the TV series House, M.D., came from Foster's work there diagnosing strange illnesses.
