Filmmakers had called for a boycott over the rule change.
The organisers behind Thailand’s Suphannahong National Film Awards have dropped a rule that would effectively disqualify independent features from nomination following a major backlash.
A recent rule change by the National Federation of Motion Pictures and Contents Associations (Mpc) stated that theatrical releases in five regions of Thailand and a minimum of 50,000 cinema admissions were required for a film to be considered for nomination. These regions include Bangkok, Chiangmai (the north), Chonburi (the east), Nakhon Ratchasima (the northeast) and Nakhon Si Thammarat (the south).

In the age of the inflation of the “content” of any kind, we tend to be anesthetized and desensitized by the sheer amount of it that is available to us. We rarely ask ourselves how it is “produced” for our entertainment or whatever. The same goes for the coverage of the big events like wars, pandemics and natural disasters and for the banal ones like quiz, game and reality shows. That is how the society of the spectacle operates. So brace yourselves for “13: Game of Death” (2006) by Chookiat Sakveerakul that thematizes it.

While the legend had been around for centuries before, most Westerns were first introduced to the concept of the Krasue in the beloved cult Indonesian effort Mystics in Bali where it was associated with the legend of the penanggalan in the country. As the stories are still very much a part of Thai culture and folklore, a small resurgence of films featuring the creature have begun to make their way out to the world at large, including Sitisiri Mongkolsiri’s latest effort screening at the Five Flavours Asian film Festival.

At FilMart in Hong Kong, Cj unveiled a slate of 13 new titles hailing from the U.S., Turkey, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.
“Our aim is to find hidden gem-like creators in local industries, and support them … by producing quality local films together,” said Jerry Ko, Cj’s head of international.
“We are not just passive investors. In Thailand and Vietnam we are working with partners but are also fully involved in packaging, casting, distributing and selling,” said Choi Yeonu, chief producer within Cj’s international production team. “And we have strong IP.”
The company’s “Miss Granny” has been remade in seven countries, while its “Sunny” has been made in Korea, Vietnam and Japan. A fourth, in Indonesia, was unveiled earlier this month.

Thailand has announced the first foreign movies to have successfully accessed the country’s new filming financial incentive scheme: comedic drama “Changeland,” directed by and starring Seth Green, and multinational action film “Triple Threat,” directed by Jesse Johnson. The two productions tapped into the new scheme and received payment after shooting in locations and studios in Thailand.
The incentive system was announced in Cannes in 2016 after years of lobbying at different levels of the Thai and international industry. The incentive for qualifying productions starts at 15% of Thai production spend and can rise to 20% under certain conditions.
The first two successful films were announced at an event in Cannes by Thailand’s deputy prime minister Wissanu Kreangam.
“Coordinating with other government departments and ministries before launching the incentive measures, we took a great deal of time to ensure that our incentives are rock-solid. We are delighted that the process went smoothly for the first two productions,...

Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.
Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.
While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...

Back in 2006 - when the Thai film industry was firing on all cylinders with action, horror, arthouse films and thrillers all making a splash on the world stage - one of the most talked about came from 20-something wunderkind writer-director Chookiat Sakveerakul. Titled 13 Beloved the film was a hard edged thriller, a sort of death by a thousand cuts that set a series of tasks in front of its protagonists. They started simple at first - kill a fly - but each paid more than the last provided that you kept going. The core question was simple enough - if you start with small enough sins will you be able to recognize / withdraw when things get serious - and the execution...

From Broken Flowers to the highly overlooked The Hottest State to Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, Mark Webber has had a healthy career in the indie drama scene (although that last feature was certainly his highest profile yet) and he’s now finally set to get his big break, but in a very different genre.
Coming off the three-punch of For a Good Time, Call.., Save the Date and his own The End of Love at Sundance, Webber has signed on to star in the next horror film from The Last Exorcism director Daniel Stamm, Variety reports. A remake of the Thai film 13: Game of Death, this one goes under the title of Angry Little God and it was just picked up by Dimensions Films for Us distribution. Check out an official synopsis below for the psychological thriller written by Stamm and David Birke and produced by Paranormal Activity‘s Jason Blum.

The brutal tale of an unlucky salesman who gets caught up in a mysterious 'game show' in which he can make 100 million Baht by carrying out 13 increasingly nasty challenges. The Chukiat Sakveerakul original was based on a comic book by Eakasit Thairatana and was pretty entertaining. His initial challenge involves simply killing a fly, however, the tasks thereafter simply become more and more gruesome. It definitely has you asking what you would do for that kind of money! Stamm is prepping the script along with writing buddy David Birke. Check out the synopsis for the 2006 original below....

Well you learn something new every day. Apparently 13: Game Of Death was based on a comic book called "13th Quiz Show". If you haven't heard of it, the movie was released in 2006 and was directed by Chukiat Sakveerakul. It was about a man who is led through progressively challenging, degrading and dangerous stunts by mysterious callers from an underground reality game show. Now Deadline report that Im Global will be producing an American remake with Daniel Stamm as director and co-writer along with David Birke. The remake's title will be shortened to 13. I was a big fan of Stamm's The Last Exorcism (until the end anyway) so I have some hope for this. If you haven't seen the original and are a fan of foreign cinema check it out, it's well worth a look. By TwitterButtons.com...

Nope, it's nothing to do with the ropey posthumous Bruce Lee vehicle from 1978 (nor the Dtv Wesley Snipes epic from earlier this year). 13: Game of Death is a Thai horror hit from 2006, and it's about to be remade by The Last Exorcism's Daniel Stamm. The original film, directed by Chukiat Sakveerakul, also goes by the moniker of 13: Beloved, and is based on Thirteenth Quiz Show, an instalment in the My Mania manga series by Eakasit Thairaat. It involves a hapless musical instrument salesman who finds himself in the middle of a reality TV contest in which he must perform thirteen tasks. They start easily with a spot of fly-swatting, but rapidly spiral into decapitating motorcyclists, beating people up with furniture, and kidnapping old ladies from hospitals. There's also a short prequel in 12: Begin, and a 2009 sequel, 14: Beyond. The news of the new version comes from the Toronto International Film Festival,...

It's a question that has beleaguered generations of cinema goers. Would you rather see actor Jeffrey Combs ('Re-Animator', 'The Frighteners', 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine') star in more horror or sci-fi!? Well at least in near future he'll be popping up in yet another role this time as 'a demented mogul' in David Guy Levy's new Periscope Entertainment production 'Would You Rather'. The gorgeous Brittany Snow -below ('Prom Night') will star as 'a desperate woman out to save her ailing brother's life' by competing in a new gruesome version of the classic 'Would You Rather'? Sounds almost along the lines of Chukiat Sakveerakul's horror/comedy '13: Game of Death' so will be worth checking out! Robin Lord Taylor, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., John Heard and former porn actress Sasha Grey (below) all co-star....

Director: Chukiat Sakveerakul. Review: Adam Wing. Thai director Chukiat Sakveerakul wants to play a game with you in the gritty psychological thriller 13: Game Of Death (a.k.a. 13 Beloved). It was early this year that we first caught sight of the great news that Chukiat Sakveerakul’s superb 2006 Thai horror thriller 13: Beloved (aka 13: Game of Death) was due to get a sequel. And now we've just found out its title. The third and final film (the first being a short prequel "12 Begins") in the series will be called 14: Beyond, and Sakveerakul will again be directing. If you haven’t already seen '13: Beloved' we highly recommend you check out this stunner of a movie. It's already available on DVD in the U.S and is due for release in the U.K later this month. Currently in production, there's no word as yet on the storyline for 14: Beyond, but you can be damn sure we're looking. More as we get it.
