Taiwanese family drama Coo-Coo 043 won best film and Hong Kong crime drama Limbo picked up the most prizes at the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan on Saturday night (November 19) as Hong Kong cinema made a grand return winning nine awards.

The prizes were quite evenly distributed this year, with no single film sweeping the 59th edition of the annual ceremony, which was held at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei.

Netflix’s latest Chinese-language family comedy series Mom, Don’t Do That! received a burst of buzz ahead of its global release Friday, winning the Taipei Film Festival’s audience award July 9.

The first two episodes of Mom, Don’t Do That! were screened in a special preview at the Taipei Film Festival on July 1. The series went on to beat 145 films and television shows from around the world to take home the event’s audience award.

“We are so excited about the prize,” series director Chen Wei-ling says. “We’ve been paying a lot of attention to getting the comedy right, and it’s an honor to receive the audience award as a TV series in a film festival. Throughout the two hours, I constantly observed viewers around me. Fortunately, they burst into laughter from the very beginning all the way to the end.

Chung Mong-hong is one of the most exciting voices coming out of Taiwanese cinema for years now. His work, either as a director in titles such “Godspeed” and “A Sun” or as producer in “The Great Buddha+” and “Classmates Minus” is a always a pleasure to watch, particularly for the way he manages to combine mainstream themes with an art-house approach and rich sociopolitical context. “The Falls” is not an exception.

Chung Mong-hong’s The Falls won best narrative feature and three other prizes at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards on Saturday night (November 27), while Kiwi Chow’s Revolution Of Our Times took best documentary feature.

Selected as Taiwan’s submission for best international feature at the Oscars, The Falls also won awards for best leading actress (Alyssa Chia), best original screenplay (Chung and Chang Yaosheng) and best original score (Lu Luming). The film received its world premiere at this year’s Venice film festival.

“The Falls,” Taiwan’s Oscar contender and a timely drama about the trauma of home quarantine, emerged as the unsurprising winner at the Golden Horse Film Awards in Taipei on Saturday.

And, in a bold decision that has the potential to enrage Mainland Chinese authorities, the prize for best documentary feature was awarded to “Revolution of Our Times.” The film chronicles the brutality of the political crackdown on the streets of Hong Kong in 2019 and 2020.

“The Falls,” which debuted at the Venice Film Festival in September, tells the tale of a mother and daughter cooped up in an apartment during a quarantine. It is directed by Chung Mong-hong, who previously directed “Parking” and “A Sun.”

At the award ceremony “The Falls” earned four prizes, including best narrative feature, best original screenplay, best actress and best original score.

Hong Kong drama “Drifting” leads Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Awards race with 12 nominations including best narrative feature and best adapted screenplay, organizers announced on Tuesday.

The film that revolves around the tragedy of homeless people in Hong Kong also earned a nomination for Jun Li in the best director category. Veteran actor Francis Ng, who plays a homeless drug addict battling for justice, was also nominated for best leading actor.

Since 2019, Beijing has operated a mainland Chinese boycott of the awards that for many years were seen as the highest accoladed for Chinese-language filmmaking. And in 2019 and 2020 most Hong Kong films and filmmakers also stayed away. This year’s list sees an uptick in the Hong Kong participation, but only in the cases of films that are unlikely ever to receive a release in mainland China.

From Screenrant: The titles are aimed at global streaming audiences and are led by Hungry Souls, produced by Eric Khoo’s Zhao Wei Films. Three of the four series are supported by the Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (Imda) and its initiative to produce “streaming first” premium scripted series for global audiences.

“2021 is a year for us here at Cj Enm Hk to expand our local language productions for the global streaming audience,” said Michael Jung, managing director of Cj Enm Hong Kong. “Apart from our existing production operation in Thailand, we also want to do more premium scripted content in Mandarin and Bahasa languages.”

The three Singaporean-led series were co-developed and co-created with local production partners and Cj Enm Hk is bringing a team of producers from Korea as creative consultants for each series.

Netflix has announced dates for its first three Chinese-language original series, starting with crime thriller Nowhere Man, which commences streaming from October 31, 2019.

Directed by DJ Chen, Nowhere Man tells the story of a gangster on death row who breaks out of prison to protect his family following a series of supernatural experiences. The series was produced in Taiwan and stars local talents Alyssa Chia, Mavis Fan and Joseph Chang.

HBO Asia, who started original productions in 2012 and has realised 15 of them so far, has announced three more Original series targeting the Southeast Asian market, and the second season of a hit Taiwanese drama.

It all happened on the first day of Filmart, the important Hong Kong International Film and TV Market, when HBO Asia CEO Jonathan Spink broke the news. Let’s see them.

Pan-regional pay-tv group HBO Asia and Taiwan-based streaming video company Catchplay are to jointly distribute Taiwanese crime drama “The World Between Us.” The 10-part series will air from March.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Lin Chun-Yang (“The Soul If Bread”) and written by the Lu Shih-Yuan (“Dear Ex”), “World” plunges into the aftermath of a mass shooting. The fate of the killer, the victims, the victims’ families, the media and the defense teams are all intertwined. Production is by Taiwanese broadcaster, Public Television Service (Pts).

The show features an all-star ensemble cast from Taiwan including Alyssa Chia, James Wen and Wu Kang-Jen.

“World” premieres on Sunday, March 24 with two back-to-back episodes from onwards exclusively on streaming platform HBO Go and across HBO Asia’s 23-territory footprint, excluding Taiwan. In Taiwan, the series will also be available on the Catchplay on-demand platform. Two new episodes will debut at the same time every Sunday.

The Asian division of the Warnermedia-backed pay-tv service will launch the series on Sunday 24 March with two back-to-back episodes. Netflix is continuing its aggressive expansion into international originals with its first Mandarin-language series and significant moves in Spain.

The Svod service has set Nowhere Man as its first Mandarin-language original. The show, which will start shooting in Taiwan later this week, is written and directed by DJ Chen. It tells the story of brotherhood, Taiwanese gangsters and jailbreak. It marks the first collaboration between Joseph Chang and Alyssa Chia as well as cast including Mavis Fan, Bo-Chieh Wang, Jeremy Liu, Zhou Ming-Fu and Greg Hsu.

In Spain, the digital platform has ordered High Seas, an eight-episode mystery-drama series set in the 1940s.
