NBC is celebrating 50 years of Saturday Night Live by honoring all of the musical guests in a new three-hour special.
Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music is airing on NBC on Monday night (January 27) and will feature untold stories behind the culture-defining, groundbreaking and news-making musical performances, sketches and cameos of the past 50 years.
The special will showcase interviews with musical artists, cast, writers, producers and more who have been part of SNL’s legacy.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Questlove, who leads the band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, directed the special with Emmy Award winner Oz Rodriguez.
“Everyone knows the most famous SNL appearances, whether it’s Elvis Costello, Prince or the Beastie Boys, but they’re the tip of a huge iceberg,” Questlove said. “The process of going back through the incredible archival footage was like being in a time machine, DeLorean or other. I’m so happy...

The cast of Saturday Night Live shares a bond unlike most anything else in television. The small group of performers spend countless hours together in pursuit of comedy. So when SNL fired one cast member in the '90s, it was no surprise to hear a couple of his colleagues took a stand.
Chris Parnell has the distinct honor of being fired from Saturday Night Live twice. The first came in 2001 after he joined the cast in 1998. SNL brought Parnell back halfway through the next season only to show him the door again in 2006.
The first firing came as a bit of a shock to Parnell. He thought he was hitting his stride, but his clashes with Lorne Michaels didn't help his case. He learned in the summer of 2001 that Michaels and SNL chose not to renew his contract.

Joining Winslet in Lee's cast are Alexander Skarsgård as Roland Penrose, Andy Samberg as David E. Scherman, Andrea Riseborough as Audrey Withers, and Josh O'Connor as Antony Penrose, among many others.
Lee was released in theaters in September 2024. Andy Samberg's tenure on Saturday Night Live produced some pretty absurd musical numbers through the Lonely Island, but one of the weirdest actually has a surprisingly important origin. Andy Samberg joined the legendary sketch comedy show in 2005, and remained a valuable member of the cast until 2012. During that time, Digital Shorts and the Lonely Island helped catapult the performer into the limelight, leading to a successful career as a film and television star. The star has even returned for certain sketches of Saturday Night Live's season 50.
Samberg is one of the subjects of "Five Minutes," the first episode of SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night. The documentary charts the history of the show, and the first episode highlights the audition process that led to many stars joining the show. This includes Samberg, who is shown rewatching his original audition. Notably, one of the characters Samberg included in the audition would...

To mark the 50th season of “Saturday Night Live,” putting together 90 minutes of live TV in six days — already a herculean feat — is not enough. In addition, the venerable variety show is flooding the zone with shows of its pop cultural might. On the heels of Jason Reitman’s hagiographic film “Saturday Night” and ahead of next month’s three-hour telecast from Studio 8H comes the four-part docuseries “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night.” Executive produced by Oscar-winner Morgan Neville, the show is the latest prong in NBC’s full-court marketing press to celebrate the anarchic experiment turned established institution. But 50 years in, the legend of Lorne Michaels’ merry circus has already been celebrated, many times over. “SNL50” adds little to this half-century of anecdotes, oral histories and archival footage. Instead, it embellishes around the edges, making use of gimmicky formats and the access that comes with aiding a corporate PR push to dress up old chestnuts.

I’ve always been fascinated by watching Hollywood screen tests of icons before they were famous, but nothing prepared me for the spectacle of watching some of Saturday Night Live‘s most celebrated players watching tapes of their own auditions, raw nerves on display. Andy Samberg threw up during his first audition. Amy Poehler asks to stop after watching a morsel of her understated tryout: “That’s enough, oh boy,” she smiles. Fascinating moments like these are peppered throughout the four hours of SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, Peacock‘s terrific behind-the-scenes docuseries that marks many of the remarkable highs and equally unforgettable lows of the revered late-night sketch-comedy variety brainchild of Lorne Michaels. Executive produced by Oscar-winner Morgan Neville, with a different director helming each of the roughly hourlong films, the series is especially enlightening in its ...

Despite having famous comedians as parents — Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller were regulars on The Ed Sullivan Show — Ben Stiller didn’t want to follow in their footsteps. “I wanted to be a serious director,” he told The New York Times. “It was more just wanting to individuate from my father, wanting to be my own person, not being into their comedy.”
Young Stiller wasn’t into that Ed Sullivan stuff — he favored Saturday Night Live. But when Stiller found himself an actual cast member on SNL, he discovered he wasn’t cut out for live sketch comedy after all. “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels is the subject of Susan Morrison’s upcoming biography “Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live,” a lengthy excerpt from which was published by The New Yorker and reveals Michaels’ hot and cold relationship with the ever-changing cast over the years. Michaels may be the boss of “SNL,” but he wasn’t always a loving paternal figure.
Alec Baldwin, who has hosted “SNL” 17 times and had a stint playing Donald Trump, told Morrison that Michaels is “Darwinian” in his management style in that “Lorne just stands back and lets them cannibalize each other.” But Morrison writes that Michaels “is flexible about the talent-management aspect of his producer role. Different personalities, he believes, require different approaches.”

There's a long, and some would say proud, tradition of popular shows managing to offend viewers. In the case of "The Simpsons," for instance, the show managed to have episodes outright banned in multiple countries for its supposedly insensitive treatment of certain cultures. Other times, pulling episodes from the air is perhaps more warranted. Following the Columbine killings in 1999, for example, The WB made a controversial choice to shelve several "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" episodes that featured a school shooting storyline (which turned out not to not really be a school shooting storyline). While the choice to pull those episodes was heavily criticized at the time, you can at least understand the mentality of the network.
More recently CBS had to pull a scene from "The Big Bang Theory" in syndication because it aged badly. Similarly, a particular scene from "The Office" was scrubbed from future airings and releases of...

Saturday Night Live sketches don’t always go smoothly. There might be flubbed lines, missed cues or, between the years 1998 and 2004, Jimmy Fallon’s constant giggling.
One of the biggest challenges for cast members and hosts is performing scenes while reading off of cue cards. Since the sketches are written (and rewritten) at the last minute, memorizing lines isn’t always an option, so actors are often forced to try and act naturally while also reading their dialogue from a large piece of cardstock that some dude is holding offscreen like that creep in Love Actually.

Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Dana Carvey, Jimmy Fallon, Amy Poehler, Tracy Morgan and Andy Samberg are among the famous former castmembers who appear in the promo for the project that streams Jan. 16. Creator Lorne Michaels’ long-running NBC sketch comedy series premiered Oct. 11, 1975, and is currently airing its 50th season.
“My first audition, I threw up,” Samberg admits in the trailer. At a different point in the footage, Fey says about SNL, “It is built on competition.”

Updated Jan. 6, 2025, at 3:45 p.m. Pt with Nikki Glaser ranked following the 2025 Golden Globes.
Original Story Published Jan. 2, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. Pt:
From 1944 to 1981, the Golden Globes opted not to have an emcee, with Robert Preston and Linda Gray being the first to tag-team the role in the 39th year. The ceremony returned to host-less the following year before employing a series cohosts – including the likes of William Shatner, Charlton Heston, Joan Collins, Faye Dunaway, and Tim Curry – from 1984 until 1995. After that, the Globe host gig was retired until 2010, when Gervais reinvigorated the format. For the past 15 years, several hosts have come and gone, for better and worse. Here’s our definitive ranking of just how golden those emcees performed, from worst to first:
8. Jo Koy (2024)
In 2024, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the scandal-ridden longtime governing body of the Globes, was out and the ceremony relocated from NBC to CBS.

Following back-to-back misfires with Golden Globe hosts Jo Koy and Jerrod Carmichael, it was Nikki Glaser‘s chance to take the reins of Hollywood’s biggest party on Sunday.
During her 10-minute monologue (watch above), the stand-up comedian walked a fine line between poking fun of the A-list celebrities in attendance and giving them their proverbial flowers for making it to the Beverly Hilton as either nominees, presenters, or guests.
She started off with a joke about how the event should really be called “Ozempic’s biggest night.” She let everyone know that she was not there to roast them, because they were so “powerful” they could do anything … “except tell the country who to vote for.” She asked Ariana Grande to “hold [her] finger,” a joke to the ongoing Wicked press tour between Grande and Cynthia Erivo. “My boyfriend’s boyfriend really loved Wicked,” Glaser later teased.

Up until taking on Gov. Tim Walz on Saturday Night Live, Jim Gaffigan tended to stay away from politics in his comedy.
But the Emmy-winning comedian doesn’t regret the times he spoke his mind, including a 2020 tweet in which he called Donald Trump “a liar and a criminal,” despite losing some Trump supporters as fans.
“I regret that people think that I was criticizing people that support Trump. And that was never the intention,” he explained on The Daily Beast’s The Last Laugh podcast. “I regret—someone said like, now I can’t follow you anymore and I kind of said ‘F you’ to them. But it’s weird because I think authenticity is really an important thing, not only as a comedian, but also with your children.

Sometimes, the magic of the movies hides a lot more than we think. We’ve all heard the saying, “What happens behind closed doors stays behind closed doors”, but in the case of Star Wars, some doors remained shut long after the camera stopped rolling.

Carrie Fisher’s portrayal of Princess Leia made her a pop culture legend, capturing hearts worldwide as one of the galaxy’s most memorable heroes. Alongside her were two other stars, Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Harrison Ford (Han Solo), forming one of the most beloved trios in cinematic history. However, there was a little something that the cameras never captured—a secret that slipped past even the keenest observers, including Hamill himself.
Hamill admitted that he was “blissfully unaware” of the affair between his co-stars Fisher and Ford during the filming of Star Wars.

"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" first aired on Fox in the fall of 2013, immediately cementing itself as yet another classic from Michael Schur ("Parks & Recreation") and Dan Goor — so why did it end, and will we ever get another season?
The comedy, which was led by "Saturday Night Live" alum Andy Samberg alongside a perfect ensemble cast including Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker, and Joel McKinnon Miller, focused on the 99th precinct in Brooklyn and their constant misadventures in policing — and that description alone might give you a clue as to why the series ended if you've, say, watched or read any news since 2020 or so. The show came to a close in the fall of 2021 with its eighth and final season after facing delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but even getting to eight seasons wasn't easy for this little show that could...

In making the film Lee, about World War II correspondent Lee Miller, Kate Winslet chose to champion a woman who simply refused to become what society dictated. Against all odds, shucking off her reputation as a fashion model, at a time when women were not allowed to work with the British Army, Miller determinedly made her way into a career as a war correspondent, venturing into dangerous territory alongside troops, capturing Nazi atrocities. However, the extent of her work was largely undiscovered until, upon her death, her son Antony Penrose stumbled on her archives in the family attic. For Winslet, who would produce and star as Miller, this was a story of an unsung hero; a woman who was so much more than the oft-used description ‘muse’ to the artist Man Ray. So strongly did Winslet feel that at times during production, she dug into her own pockets to keep it going.

Not long into "Palm Springs," trying to explain the strange situation they find themselves in, Nyles (Andy Samberg) tells Sarah (Cristin Milioti), "This is today. Today is yesterday, and tomorrow is also today. It's one of those infinite time loop situations you might've heard about." Incredulous, she repeats, "That I might've heard about?"
Everyone's heard about infinite time loop situations, at least in the world of cinema. They've been around a while, but ever since 1993's "Groundhog Day," the idea of being stuck in the same day, repeating everything day in and day out, has stuck in the popular consciousness. Several movies have tried to recapture the novelty of "Groundhog Day," using the time loop conceit to examine everything from romantic relationships to social justice issues like police brutality. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is remembered for its funny dialogue and over-the-top gags, but as with all Michael Schur shows, there was a lot of heart as well. Over Brooklyn Nine-Nine's eight seasons, the squad became a found family, so it was deeply emotional when members of the team faced heightened or dangerous situations. As the show gained popularity by the middle of its run, the sitcom took time to address real-world issues like racial profiling and workplace sexual harassment.
Weaving in heavy topics while remaining true to its comedic core is a testament to the writers and cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) led the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and his arc mimics the maturity of the show, especially in the later seasons when the show explored the detectives' personal lives. Later seasons also reflected a shift in cultural perspectives toward police work, leaning more into longer arcs about systematic corruption.

Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Sonic The Hedgehog 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features a wide collection of exciting Easter eggs, video game references, and more. Featuring Team Sonic as they clash with the "live-action" debut of Shadow the Hedgehog (voiced by Keanu Reeves), the third Sonic movie adapts several elements from the classic games from Sega, particularly Sonic Adventure 2. To that end, there are several great nods to the 2001 game, alongside many other fun references to the first two Sonic movies, pop culture, and more.
Inspired by Shadow's first appearance in Sonic Adventure 2 alongside Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik (Jim Carrey), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 adapts several core elements of the darker hedgehog's origins, such as his relationship with Maria Robotnik, Gerald's granddaughter. As such, plenty of exciting game connections can be found in the new Sonic movie alongside more typical references audiences have come to expect from the franchise.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live,” NBC is sharing the untold stories behind the late night staple’s culture-defining, groundbreaking and newsmaking musical performances, sketches and cameos over the years in a new documentary.
“Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music,” which is set to premiere Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on NBC and stream the next day on Peacock, will be directed by Grammy and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Emmy Award winner Oz Rodriguez.
“Everyone knows the most famous ‘SNL’ appearances, whether it’s Elvis Costello, Prince or the Beastie Boys, but they’re the tip of a huge iceberg,” Questlove said in a Thursday statement. “The process of going back through the incredible archival footage was like being in a time machine, DeLorean or other. I’m so happy I went on the trip and now get to share it with everyone.

The landmark 50th season of “Saturday Night Live” continued its string of cameos from past cast members on Sunday with a surprise appearance by Adam Sandler, who popped up in a sketch with friend and frequent co-star Chris Rock, who hosted the latest episode.
In a sketch titled “Gallbladder Surgery,” Rock played a doctor operating on a patient alongside his support staff, played by Bowen Yang, Ego Nwodim, Emil Wakim and Sarah Sherman. It was Sherman who was the star of the sketch as a nurse named Lizly who keeps messing up in increasingly fatal ways.
“Yep I’m just gonna own it, that was me,” Lizly says when Rock discovers she marked the wrong organ for removal on the patient.
After discovering she left her airpod in the patient and then marked him for the wrong dose of anesthesia, the patient awakes only to reveal himself to be Sandler,...

When Yo Gabba Gabba! premiered on Nickelodeon in 2007, it quickly became a phenomenon, but the show wasn't without its controversy. Created by Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz and developed by Kay Wilson Stallings, the children's series gained a massive following. Within a year, Yo Gabba Gabba! expanded beyond television to become a multimedia sensation. Toys, apparel, and albums flew off the shelves, and live shows sold out nationwide. The series was even named one of the 10 best shows of 2007 by Time Magazine, and The New York Times Magazine published a glowing article about its cultural impact.
Yo Gabba Gabba! was hosted by DJ Lance Rock (Lance Robertson), an enigmatic figure who always appeared in a surreal orange outfit. The show followed five costumed monsters — Muno, Foofa, Plex, Brobee, and Toodee — who had adventures, sang songs, danced, and taught kids life lessons. Part of Yo Gabba Gabba's appeal for kids was...
