In Shoreditch’s uber-trendy Electric Light Station several weeks back, some of the UK’s biggest disabled stars gathered to usher in Channel 4’s coverage of the Paralympics, and there was fire in their bellies.
The evening featured talks and appearances from the likes of wheelchair basketball star-turned presenter Ade Adepitan, Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Ayling-Ellis and The Last Leg host Adam Hills, all of whom will play a part in Channel 4’s coverage when the games kick off next Wednesday. Titled ‘Considering What?’, the network’s Paralympics ad was also unveiled, which challenges the notion that disabled athletes are often dismissed with epithets such as “she’s good… for someone in a wheelchair,” when in fact they face the same battle against gravity, friction and time as able-bodied Olympians. Onlookers were inspired by the ad.

The BBC Factual department has unveiled a vast slate including a natural history series following four animal families over four years and shows commemorating the 40th anniversaries of the Falklands War and AIDS crisis.
At an event yesterday in London, Fiona Campbell, Acting Head of Factual, Arts and Classical Music, unveiled Kingdom, which will follow leopards, hyenas, wild dogs and lions and was described as “one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken” by the BBC Studios Natural History Unit (Nhu).
Filmed in Zambia, the show is a co-production with BBC America and is similar in scope to 2019’s Dynasties, which followed five royal families of the animal kingdom.
“With more time in the field than any previous Nhu production, never has a BBC landmark followed a group of characters so intensely over such a long period or spent so much time embedded in a single habitat,” said the BBC.

Pentecostal preachers stand on street corners calling homosexuality an "abomination" and describing gay men as "dirty and nasty".
The biggest dancehall popstars create hit tracks vowing to "burn" and "shoot" gay men. And the church has decided that the gay community are on the "wrong side of God".
You might have already known that being gay or transgender in Jamaica was tough but you won't have realised quite how tough until you watch Channel 4's Unreported World documentary , which reveals the shocking truth about the people who have been forced to live in the gutters with the rats because of their sexuality.
Hosted by Ade Adepitan, the documentary is eye-opening and tough viewing.
Adepitan visits a storm drain in New Kingston, a roadside tunnel that's usually filled with rats, floodwater and rubbish. But the small dingy hole in the ground is now filled with around 25 young gay and transgender...

BFI Film Fund director Ben Roberts said at today’s Diversify conference that in the future the BFI might introduce diversity obligations for producers to receive their full amount of Lottery funding.
“Lottery money is a big responsibility and we can do more. There are a number of ways we can use it more effectively [in terms of diversity],” he said.
“I feel we should be placing more obligations on producers for a diverse workforce, because we can do that.”
He said theat the BFI would start with some kind of “baseline audit” of the production workforce then take that data into roundtable discussions about what are the most high impact routes to success. Then the BFI could potentially “impose obligations on producers who get Lottery funding to diversify their workforce.”
For instance, the BFI could potentially withhold 5% of an awardee’s funding if they aren’t running a diverse film set. He added: “On-screen representation is appalling, we have to...

However, those fears have quickly evaporated with the Paralympics proving to be at the very least an equal of London 2012 when it comes to a national celebration of sporting brilliance and feel-good television. Channel 4 invested heavily to get the rights to the Paralympics, scrapped the rest of their scheduling and produced one of the greatest and biggest TV marketing campaigns in their history. The 'Meet the Superhumans' adverts captured imaginations and brought some traditional C4 edge and cool to the world of sport. Clare Balding was the unquestionable star of the BBC's London 2012 coverage and it was a canny move from C4 to nab her as one of their key anchors. Ade Adepitan, T4's (more)...
