The first ever London Soundtrack Festival is taking place in association with the BFI from March 19-26 2025, headlined by Oscar-winning Lord Of The Rings composer Howard Shore.
He will take part in an in-conversation event with filmmaker David Cronenberg, where they will discuss their collaborations, having worked together on all but one of Cronenberg’s films.
Shore’s further credits include Mrs Doubtfire, Silence Of The Lambs and Martin Scorsese films such as The Departed and The Aviator. A retrospective of the Canadian composer’s work joins events celebrating the likes of Tar and Joker composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, as well as Anna Meredith,...

BMI Celebrates ‘Game of Thrones’ Composer Ramin Djawadi With Icon Honor at Annual Film and TV Awards
“Game of Thrones” composer Ramin Djawadi was honored with the BMI Icon Award at Broadcast Music Inc.’s 40th annual Film, TV and Visual Media Awards Wednesday night in Beverly Hills.
The Emmy-winning, Grammy-nominated composer was acknowledged for his “memorable scores and themes inspiring future generations of composers,” BMI president-ceo Mike O’Neill said in presenting the award.
Djawadi’s music for “Game of Thrones” became a sensation during the HBO fantasy series’ eight-season run, which concluded in 2019. He won two Emmys, for his music in the seventh and eighth seasons, and later conducted it with symphony orchestras and choirs during world tours in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
His other television credits include “Westworld,” “Prison Break” and the current fantasy and sci-fi series “House of the Dragon,” “3 Body Problem” and “Fallout.” Among his film credits are “Iron Man,” “Eternals,” “A Wrinkle in Time,” “Clash of the Titans” and “Pacific Rim,” and he has...

Skydance New Media’s World War II Marvel game has finally got a title: Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. Not only that, it has also got a release window and a first trailer. The game is based on the Marvel superhero characters, Captain America, Black Panther, and two other characters.
The characters of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra
Skydance and Marvel Games announced the game back in 2021 (via Deadline) and officially teased in 2022 (via Game Informer). The trailer of the game is rather promising as it sees Captain America and Black Panther in a face-off. This is not the first time the two characters have shared the screen in the Marvel Universe, but this is certainly the first time that they will come together like this.

Marvel and Skydance New Media showcased the first trailer of Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra at Epic’s State of Unreal 2024. The game was first announced in 2022.
The trailer depicts a complex relationship between Black Panther and Captain America, who initially appear to be clashing against one another. I presume the beloved heroes will join forces later in the game to take down Hydra.
Marvel 1943 is a narrative-driven cinematic action game set during World War II. The project is helmed by former Uncharted writer-director Amy Hennig and is made in Unreal Engine 5, which is evident from the highly detailed and visually stunning world seen in the trailer. The score is composed by Grammy winner Stephen Barton, who has previously created background score for games like Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
Hennig revealed that the trailer was put together using real-time scenes from the gameplay. She added that Marvel 1943 uses MetaHuman Animator,...

"Star Trek: Picard" shares more than a little DNA with "12 Monkeys." In its third season, the recently ended "Trek" sequel series was captained by showrunner Terry Matalas, who co-created the wild Syfy Channel adaptation of Terry Gilliam's also-wild film. Aside from a shared showrunner, "Star Trek: Picard" was home to several key cast and crew members who worked on both shows – and nearly featured one more.
In a Reddit Ama about the show's third season, user Drewski1138 pointed out several narrative choices in "Picard" that echoed "12 Monkeys," including references to a mysterious red realm, a new drug called "Splinter" (a reference to "12 Monkeys" time travel), and more. "Were there any '12 Monkeys' Easter eggs we might have missed ... Were there any that you were told you couldn't put in?" the user asked Matalas. The answer? No, but there was one Easter egg that never came to...

Barbie, Spider-Man, Black Panther – visions of dolls and comic-book characters inevitably will be dancing in the heads of Grammy voters when they sit down to nominate movie music for this year’s golden gramophones.
“Barbie: The Album” seems a shoo-in to compete for best compilation soundtrack, the category for movies dominated by songs. But the Metro Boomin-curated album for the animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” also topped Billboard’s soundtrack chart this year and seems likely to swing into competition.
On a similar note, the third edition of “Guardians of the Galaxy” film inspired another “Awesome Mix” that was hugely popular and seems poised to join its two predecessors as a Grammy nominee. The “Fast X” album and Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with its new songs by Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda, could also make it onto the ballot.

As Emmy voting comes to a close, score mixer Phil McGowan could find himself with multiple nominations, having worked on the sound of Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard,” Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” and “Ozark,” and Roku’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”
He spoke with Variety about his approach to each project and what needed to be taken into consideration to preserve the sonic integrity in his mixes.
“Cobra Kai”
“This season was bigger and more maximal than previous seasons, but there wasn’t a big sonic shift. However, each episode is like a movie. Composers Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson approach it like it’s another ‘Karate Kid’ film. There are guitars, a drum kit, drum machines and lots of percussion. They use a lot of samples that are reminiscent of the 1980s and ’90s. So, I have fun applying mixing techniques with reverb that blends ’80s hair metal...

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard not only reunited all of the Next Generation crew, but also gave them a fitting sendoff for which fans have been waiting since the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis. It wasn’t easy for anyone, including composer Stephen Barton.
Barton admits, however, that he painted himself, or composed himself rather, into a corner.

[This story contains spoilers for Picard season three’s final episode.]
Star Trek Picard’s third season finale takes the Next Generation crew back to where it all began — though showrunner Terry Matalas was too busy capturing its key scenes to take in the wonder of being on the bridge of the Enterprise-d nearly 30 years after Tng went off the air.
“The Last Generation” – written and directed by Matalas – concludes a season-long narrative with a finale that is a high-stakes mix of nostalgia and tears. The episode finds Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the rest of his The Next Generation crew taking their old ship, the Enterprise-d, deep into the heart of a massive Borg cube to save Picard’s Borg-ified son, Jack (Ed Speleers), from the vengeful clutches of the Borg Queen (voiced by Star Trek: First Contact’s Alice Krige) before she can use Jack (Aka “Vox”) to assimilate the galaxy. Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir continued her winning streak, claiming top honors for both her “Joker” and “Chernobyl” scores at Tuesday night’s inaugural awards of the Society of Composers & Lyricists at Los Angeles’ Skirball Cultural Center.
Her music for “Joker” was named outstanding original score for a studio film and her score for HBO’s “Chernobyl” was cited as outstanding original score for a television or streaming production. They followed her Golden Globe win Sunday night for “Joker” and BAFTA nomination earlier Tuesday. She won the Emmy in September for her score to the HBO miniseries “Chernobyl.”
Guðnadóttir is among the most talked-about newcomers in film music, first for her “Chernobyl” score (built largely on sounds she recorded while visiting the nuclear power plant where it was shot) and more recently her “Joker” music (her electro-acoustic cello providing the accompaniment for star Joaquin Phoenix’s on-screen dancing). The Society of Composers & Lyricists has been around for nearly 75 years, but not until this year did the organization start its own annual awards program for music appearing in film, TV and videogames — and the nominees announced Tuesday for the inaugural show are certain to be scrutinized as a bellwether for what to expect as the Motion Picture Academy’s music branch votes on shortlists for the song and score categories.

The latter limited series already won her an Emmy, and she’s being seen as a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination for scoring the blockbuster supervillain origin story.
The Scl Awards have instituted separate categories for scores of studio films and independent films. In the studio division, Gudnadóttir’s “Joker” music will face the scores written by Michael Abels for “Us,...

For Cameron, Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away .was a dream come true. I had been talking to them for some time about doing something in 3D because it’s never been done. How lucky to be working with the Cirque family, to have that talent create such an emotional performance for this film. Because their death-defying acts require such incredible skill and nerve, we felt it was so important to show the cabling, everything supporting that human ability.

Stephen Barton knows he's lucky to be alive—and now the 22-year-old survivor of the Aurora, Colo., theater massacre is doing what he can to prevent such a thing from happening again. "In the next four years, 48,000 Americans won't be so lucky because they'll be murdered with guns in the next president's term," says Barton, who was shot in the face and neck when a gunman opened fire on a packed screening of The Dark Knight Rises, in a new pro-gun control public service announcement for the Demand a Plan campaign. The number of prospective victims is "enough to fill over 200 theaters," Barton notes. The PSA, paid for by United Against Illegal Guns Support Fund, seeks to...

Stephen Barton has gone from victim to advocate. One of the 58 injured survivors of the mass shooting in an Aurora, Colorado theater during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises that killed 12, Barton has gone public in a non-partisan public service message asking both President Obama and Mitt Romney to offer up a plan to curb gun violence. He cites statistics that say 48,000 Americans will die of gun violence in the next four years -- nearly 9,000 died from firearms in 2010 -- and requests that voters watching this week's debate watch closely for any
