In the summer of 2022, Netflix released “Halftime,” a glossy, shiny, and intermittently revelatory documentary focused on global icon Jennifer Lopez. That offering found unexpected (if highly unrelatable) pathos in the star’s distress over not being nominated for an Oscar for her (quite good) turn in “Hustlers.” Just twenty months later, and yet another streamer is now releasing its own glossy, shiny, and intermittently revelatory film project focused on global icon Jennifer Lopez. The pathos, though? That’s mostly missing, but certainly not for lack of trying.
The project comes from the mind of Lopez herself, who also co-financed the effort. It’s clunkily titled (and punctuated) as “This Is Me…Now: A Love Story,” linking it inextricably with Lopez’s latest studio album, which just so happens to be dropping the same day as its “cinematic” component. Synergy!
The official synopsis for the project is filled with chestnuts that...

On her 2002 album This is Me…Then, Jennifer Lopez included a song addressing Ben Affleck. “Dear Ben” is a confession and a love letter to Affleck, whom the singer met and started dating during the shooting of the film Gigli. The album was released two weeks after the pair’s engagement. The song ends with a now melancholic coda: “There’s no way I’d leave you / It’s just not a reality / Sometimes I feel like I’m living in a fantasy.” A year later, after Lopez and Affleck postponed their wedding, the pair broke up.
More than 20 years later, Lopez’s life looks different. She’s even more established in her career, she’s a mother of two teenagers and she remarried the love of her life. Three years ago, Lopez and Affleck rekindled their relationship, becoming proof of the adage “right person, wrong time.” To commemorate this...

Jennifer Lopez took on an enormous challenge with This is Me … Now: A Love Story, the “narrative driven, cinematic original” film that hits Prime Video this week. It wasn’t the singing, acting or intricate choreography featured in the 65-minute musical, as the multihyphenate can do all of that in her sleep. The real hurdle arose when the money disappeared and Lopez opted to open her wallet to pay for the whole thing.
“Everybody thought I was crazy when I said I would do it. We did have financing, and then that fell out. They pulled out at the last minute, and then it was that moment where you go, ‘Ok, do we just make a video or do we go ahead and do this thing?'” explained the 54-year-old entertainer during an interview at the Four Seasons Los Angeles in Beverly Hills while sitting alongside her Nuyorican Prods. producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.

Exclusive: Veteran talent manager and producer Lori Kay has parted ways with NYC-based production entity Fp to relaunch Prevail Artist Entertainment, a talent management and production company she initially established in 2015.
The move came following Kay’s reevaluation of her approach to her business amidst last year’s double strike, and as she dives more fully into producing. Relaunching Prevail will mean a return to a more focused and hands-on approach to client relations and, Kay says, “truly feels like coming home.”
In Kay’s absence, Fp’s primary production division Framework Productions will continue forward, with founder and CEO Steven Pierce at the helm alongside Head of Production James Allerdyce. The company’s recently established talent division Fp Artists, though, which Kay had been tasked with heading up, will be dissolved.

Ok, this one is certainly hard to categorize, but let’s give it a shot. Inspired by Jennifer Lopez’s upcoming album of the same name due in February, the film “This Is Me…Now” is a quasi-documentary with narrative elements— an intimate, fantastical, and narrative-driven reflection of her personal journey of self-healing and self-love (perhaps inspired by some of Beyonce’s most recent documentaries).
Directed by Dave Meyers, the film was written by Jennifer Lopez and Matt Walton with a story conceived by Lopez, Meyers, and Chris Shafer.

"What is wrong with you?!" Oscope Labs & Factory 25 has debuted an official trailer for an indie satirical comedy titled The Misogynists, the latest from filmmaker Onur Tukel. This premiered at a few smaller film festivals in 2017, but has been quietly awaiting release ever since. Mostly because it's about two assholes and comes with a title as blatant as "The Misogynists". In a single, fully-stocked hotel room on the night of the 2016 general election, two Trump supporters celebrate the results. "Led by Dylan Baker's gleefully deranged performance, Tukel's tongue-in-cheek exploration of a divided America digs deep into the night's mass existential crisis and uncovers some disquieting truths." In addition to Dylan Baker, this also stars Trieste Kelly Dunn, Ivana Milicevic, Lou Jay Taylor, Matt Walton, Christine Campbell, Nana Mensah, Rudy De La Cruz, Cynthia Thomas, Darrill Rosen, Karl Jacob, and Matt Hopkins. Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner told investors Thursday that the company’s $4 billion acquisition of Peppa Pig owner Entertainment One will only augment a long-cultivated relationship with Paramount Pictures.
Goldner has steered the toymaker and licensing giant through a strategic shift toward Hollywood that has yielded major film and streaming deals as the entertainment business craves pre-sold brands. Hasbro Studios has made movies for Universal (Ouija) but delivered multiple installments of Transformers and G.I. Joe at Paramount. In 2017, the companies re-upped their production and distribution deal through 2022.
Hasbro Studios also has taken advantage of the streaming boom, signing exclusive kids programming and merchandise deals with Netflix. Success on the entertainment front is one reason Hasbro stock has more than tripled in value during the past decade.

Ed Sheeran’s new album No.6 Collaborations Project has arrived and with it a music video for “Antisocial,” his joint track with Travis Scott. The slightly bonkers clip, directed by Dave Meyers and written by Matt Walton, sees Sheeran embodying numerous characters, with numerous wigs. Movie references abound, including a particularly horrifying moment where Scott plays the title character of Edward Scissorhands as a dentist. At the end of the video, Sheeran and Scott find themselves in a diner, with Sheeran begging for the last French fry.

So I grabbed a midnight showing to the second official screening to Habib Azar's Armless, and I've got to say that the Next section is what it is - small films that are a little rough around the edges but manage to deliver the goods. Here we have an original story idea, that takes on a disturbing subject matter with a generous dose of comedic strokes -- think Downloading Nancy with taboo comedy - I'm thinking daytime soaps certainly influenced Azar's approach. - I'm about to begin Day 6, and I'm still in the process of finishing Day 3 coverage on the site. Fact is, there is only a limited available amount of time each day to write out something before crashing and waking up 6 hours for the next day of screenings. So I grabbed a midnight showing to the second official screening to Habib Azar's Armless, and I've got...

The lucky inaugural eight include: Habib Azar's Armless, Linas Philips's Bass Ackwards, Sultan Sharrief's Bilal’s Stand, Katie Aselton's The Freebie, Barnes Bros' Homewrecker, Adam Bowers's New Low, Michael Mohan's One Too Many Mornings and Eyad Zahra's The Taqwacores - which has nothing to do with the docu film Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam: (same subject, different film). - If you see or hear me calling this the Miranda July's (you'll have to have seen Me and You and Everyone We Know) section it's because of its no greater or lesser than emblem ( < = > ). John Cooper officially had a stroke of genius with the announcement of the section earlier in the year, and the batch of eight shows the festival is certainly getting back into the "indie" spirit of things again or, it will be seen as Sundance stealing some of the...

On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010. Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.
The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:
Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew. John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener. Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.
The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.
Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin. I’ve read the script and its great. More on that as soon as I can.
The Runaways, the...

We are 49 days out and counting down to Sundance 2010. Yesterday, we unveiled the list of competition films for the upcoming festival. Today, we have your list of out-of-competition films which include Premieres, Spotlight, New Frontier, and, my personal favorite, Park City at Midnight, which has featured past entries like Black Dynamite, The Descent, and Saw.
Check out next year’s lineup for the out-of-competition films:

To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. Presented by Entertainment Weekly.

Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Variety has a big write-up detailing the categories and more on the festival right here, but I am just going to offer up the titles and let you sort it all out.
The titles already in the RopeofSilicon database are linked.
Premieres
All films are from the United States unless otherwise noted Abel (Mexico-u.S.), the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna, written by Luna and Agusto Mendoza, about a peculiar young boy who, as he blurs reality and fantasy, takes over the responsibilities of a family man in his father's absence. With Jose Maria Yazpik, Karina Gidi,...

In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.
Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).
I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).
In the Midnight section, Adam Green's Frozen is sounding mighty find,...

Sundance released their slate for 2010. It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. The Sundance Film Festival's competition lineup for 2010, announced Wednesday, might demand that audiences wear their serious caps. But the out-of-competition selections allow programmers and viewers to cut loose a little.
The 53 films that populate this year's Premieres, Next, Spotlight, Park City at Midnight and New Frontier sections run the gamut from the cosmically experimental to the star-studded and silly. There is indeed something for everyone at this year's event, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.
As usual, Premieres collects work involving the industry's higher-profile talent, none more so than John Wells' feature directorial debut, "The Company Men," which stars Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper. Mexican actor Diego Luna's directorial debut, "Abel," will screen, as will Philip Seymour Hoffman's "Jack Goes Boating."
