Director Nick Cassavetes’ 2002 thriller John Q. centers on John Quincy Archibald (Washington), a father who takes a hospital emergency room hostage when he is unable to pay for his young son’s heart transplant.

John Q. gained a champion in New Line exec Michael De Luca and got off life support once Washington signed on in 2000; co-stars Robert Duvall, James Woods and Anne Heche soon joined.

If you're under the age of 60, it's possible you don't know who Rin Tin Tin is. This is a pity, as there was a time when Rin Tin Tin was one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. Born in Fliery, France in 1918, Rin Tin Tin (sometimes called Rinty for short) was a German Shepherd found on a French battlefield by an American solider named Lee Duncan, fighting in World War I. Returning from the war, Duncan trained Rinty to perform on camera and merely walked the dog from studio to studio, asking if they were looking for a performing animal. Rin Tin Tin made his film debut in the 1922 film "The Man from Hell's River," replacing a persnickety wolf. He would go on to play a Wolf Dog in the 1923 film "Where the North Begins," launching the popular pooch into the mainstream.

“Heretic” is an A24 horror movie starring Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East. It is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.
In a surprising turn of events, Hugh Grant takes center stage in a genre that’s far from his usual comedic stomping grounds. “Heretic” is a religious horror film that could have easily fallen into the realm of mediocrity, but thanks to the deft hands of directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, it emerges as a genuinely good—perhaps even exceptional—piece of cinema.
The film follows two young Mormon girls who are invited into the home of an older man. As they begin to discuss religious precepts, the man, who appears to be highly knowledgeable, starts to challenge and question the girls’ beliefs. This simple premise sets the stage for a thought-provoking exploration of faith and doubt.

[This story contains some mild spoilers for Heretic.]
The heavens have smiled on Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ Heretic.
Critics and audiences are of the belief that their fourth outing as writer-directors is their finest work yet, and it’s been a long time coming considering the Iowa natives’ thought-provoking religious horror movie was conceived before they broke out as the co-writers and originators of A Quiet Place (2018). The film is largely a three-hander between two Mormon missionaries, Sisters Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Paxton (Chloe East), and a potential convert named Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). Upon entering the Englishman’s home in order to peddle the wares of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the two missionaries soon realize they’ve been ensnared in a terrifying game of wits that is meant to test and contradict their faith.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains mild spoilers for “Heretic,” in theaters now.
In their new movie “Heretic,” now in theaters via A24, writer-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods tell the story of a mysterious man named Mr. Reed, who traps two Mormon missionaries in his house after they try to educate him about their faith.
Before they could begin filming, Beck and Woods had the unique challenge of casting the complicated character of Mr. Reed. They needed a lead actor who could switch between villainous and charming in the blink of an eye, who could also deliver plenty of deep dialogue about religious ideas.
It wasn’t a role for the faint of heart, but Beck and Woods thought of Hugh Grant after seeing one of his shapeshifting performances.
“We’ve been blown away by Hugh — of course, we grew up with all of his incredible romantic comedies,” Woods says.

“Heretic” is here.
A24’s latest high-minded horror movie follows a pair of adorable Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), who arrive at the cottage-like home of a reclusive Englishman Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant) and get much more than they bargained for. What starts off as a spirited conversation about faith becomes something much more horrific, as Mr. Reed starts to challenge and then push them in some truly perverse, violent ways.
Will the two missionaries escape this man’s vile grasp? And what will be left of them if they do?

A24's latest twisty chiller, Heretic, is now in theatres, and we're breaking down what happens in the final act of the critically-acclaimed religious horror flick.
Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who broke through with their script for John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, Heretic stars Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed, who has some fiendish plans for two missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), who come calling.
Initially wary of coming inside the house, the girls feel more at ease when the seemingly gregarious and welcoming Reed tells them that his wife is at home and currently baking a pie in the kitchen. Alarm bells go off when one of them notices a blueberry pie scented candle burning on the table, and Reed's mask begins to slip.

After a “leaked” report claiming she is a biological man, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif‘s Olympic gold medal is being called into question.
Khelif, along with Taiwan boxer Lin Yu-Ting, were the subject of controversy during the 2024 Olympics after failing the gender eligibility tests at last year’s world championships. However, they were both allowed to compete and won in their respective weight categories.
Now, Khelif’s credibility is being re-examined due to allegations, first reported by Blid, that she is biologically male. French and Algerian endocrinologists collaborated to make the claims.

“Heretic” co-writers and directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are worshiping at the altar of A24, especially amid the blasphemy of using AI in films.
The “A Quiet Place” screenwriters told Variety that A24 fully supported the inclusion of an end-credits message saying that “no generative AI was used in the making of this film” to point to the practical effects of the indie horror feature.
“Heretic” opens in theaters November 8, and stars Hugh Grant as a theological scholar who preys upon two Mormon teen missionaries, played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East.

“No generative AI was used in the making of this film,” directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods wrote in the end credits of their new horror, Heretic.
Film history is peppered with unusual entries in end credits, including recipes for chocolate brownies and pointed messages to a certain California school board. To those we can add the one tucked away in the end crawl of Heretic, the religious horror released in UK cinemas last week.
As pointed out by Variety, co-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have put a message in its end credits which states, “No generative AI was used in the making of this film.”
The film itself isn’t about technology, but rather about a pair of Mormon missionaries – played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East – who find themselves in the home of Hugh Grant’s rather sinister academic, Mr Reed. Still, its filmmakers felt it was...

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ newest movie, “Heretic,” out Nov. 8 via A24, is filled with thought-provoking discussions about faith and humanity. But eagle-eyed viewers will notice something unconventional in the credits: A message stating that “No generative AI was used in the making of this film.”
While “Heretic” — which tells the story of two Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) who get trapped in the house of a mysterious man (Hugh Grant) — has limited visual effects, Woods says they felt compelled to send audiences home with this discussion point.
“We have no illusions that when people watch ‘Heretic’ they’re going to go, ‘Wait, did they use generative AI?'” he says. “It doesn’t feel like that at all, but it was important for us to put that out there because we think it’s something people need to start talking about.”

In a year full of terrific (and terrifying) horror movies, "Heretic" stands out from the crowd. Driven by captivating dialogue and a simmering sense of dread that eventually boils over into outright terror, the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have done the impossible: They've made an A24 horror movie that captures the studio's trademark sense of unease while also delivering a proper crowdpleaser. It's the kind of movie that feels carefully built to appeal to horror fans ranging from arthouse to casual, all without sacrificing character, atmosphere, and yes, scares. As I wrote in my review from Fantastic Fest, this is simply an extremely good time at the movies.
And delivering extremely good times at the movies is what Beck and Woods do best. After writing "A Quiet Place," they directed two of the most underrated genre films of the past few years with "Haunt...

As the years advance and we all draw closer to our dotage, we should each of us try our very best to be a little more Hugh Grant. Having bumbled through his Richard Curtis period as the quintessential English gentleman, and arched a caddish eyebrow during his charismatic bounder years, Grant has now landed happily in what can only be described as his couldn’t-give-a-fuck era. He is clearly having the time of his life. From a D&d rogue (Honour Among Thieves) to a surly Oompa Loompa (Wonka) and even Tony The Tiger (Unfrosted), Grant’s output has been so chaotically diverse in recent years that it’s all but impossible to predict what he’ll turn his hand to next. Did anyone have ‘malevolent intellectual with an extensive library of leather-bound books and a convenient en suite torture dungeon’? No, neither did we.

Hugh Grant is at his mischievous best in Heretic, a new horror offering from directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place). The film centres on two young missionaries whose conviction is brutally tested when they stumble upon the wrong house and find themselves face-to-face with an unsettling stranger.
Grant stars as Mr. Reed, a refined yet deeply sinister recluse whose isolated rural home becomes a stage for a darkly humorous, tense psychological game of cat and mouse with young Mormon missionaries Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher of Yellowjackets fame) and Chloe East (The Fabelmans).
Initially, Reed seems merely eccentric, but as the encounter unfolds, it’s clear he has a darker agenda, drawing the young women into a disturbingly complex game that tests the boundaries of faith and moral certainty. That ’70s Show alum Topher Grace also appears as Elder Kennedy, whose search for the young women lands him...

From the writers of A Quiet Place comes a fun thriller about two missionaries trapped by Hugh Grant. Here’s our Heretic review.
Going into Heretic, I was worried. The word of mouth for the film was good, but I also knew nothing about it apart from the basic premise from the trailer. Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the duo behind the idea for A Quiet Place, Heretic could either end up being a cult classic or something of a letdown.
Heretic is definitely the former.
The setup sees two missionaries, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), who are going door to door in the pouring rain, offering people more information on God and their church. When they reach Mr Reed’s (Hugh Grant) door, they’re happy to accept his invitation to step inside after he assures them that his wife is also home and baking a pie.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (BO6) has been out for a few days now, and while the game has been generally well-received, there’s one particular aspect of the multiplayer that’s causing quite a stir among players.
We’re talking, of course, about the Recon Combat Specialty perk, which grants players a brief period of literal wallhacks upon respawning.

Now, we all know that Call of Duty multiplayer has always been a bit of a chaotic affair, but this new perk seems to be taking things to a whole new level. Players are already finding ways to exploit the mechanic, leading to some truly jaw-dropping (and arguably unfair) plays.

Black Ops 6 has finally been released and early reactions from the gaming community and critics suggest that this year’s entry is a step up from the more recent titles. It was time for the developers to steer the franchise back in the right direction and out of the pit it fell into many years ago.
Despite having a great single-player story mode, combat mechanics like the human shield, and an omnidirectional movement system, there is one aspect the developers didn’t bother touching up on for this installment. Players would appreciate hearing Case talk rather than be a voiceless grunt.

However, he might’ve found a new love already. He was spotted celebrating Halloween with an actress from Desperate Housewives.
Did Prince Charming Find His Cinderella?
New photos of Anderson surfaced on social media. He spent time with actress Barbara Alyn Woods. She’s best known for her roles on the primetime hits One Tree Hill and Desperate Housewives.

If there’s one thing Haunt proves, it’s that sometimes the simplest premises deliver the most spine-chilling results. Directed by A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, this easiy over-looked 2019 horror gem takes the familiar concept of a haunted house and turns it into a blood-soaked exercise in terror, one that plays as much on the fears within as it does on physical dangers lurking around every corner.
Katie Stevens stars as Harper, a college student whose Halloween night starts with an effort to escape her toxic relationship and ends up with a trip through the bowels of one of horror’s most extreme haunted houses. Coaxed into joining her friends on a detour from the usual revelries, Harper, her roommate Bailey (Lauryn Alisa McClain), and four other friends take their chances at a remote haunt. The Black Ops series within Call of Duty has long been one of the more unique corners of the franchise. Setting aside the battles of modern warfare, it delves into deeper waters of Cold War espionage and twisted conspiracies. Black Ops 6 marks the sixth installment in this stylistically distinctive branch of the franchise.

In the "The Simpsons" episode "Brother from the Same Planet", Homer (Dan Castellaneta) forgets about Bart (Nancy Cartwright) at soccer practice, leaving him to wait for many hours. Bart, as he often does, accuses Homer of being a terrible father, and seeks revenge by submitting his name to the Bigger Brother agency (a riff on Big Brothers Big Sisters of America) hoping to find a new temporary guardian to care for him. Bart is paired with a charming, caring man named Tom (Phil Hartman), an ultra-cool test pilot. Tom is gentle and attentive, and Bart enjoys the time they spend together. Bart eventually starts to feel guilty, though, when he realizes Tom's time could be spent caring for a more disadvantaged child than he.

The entire team behind the original “A Quiet Place” has more or less cashed in on the goodwill from that first film to the fullest possible extent—including the I.P. itself, instantly proving that it can’t be sustained for more than a single outing. Not least of these savvy artists is its pair of screenwriters, Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who’ve leveraged the success of their neat little premise (as long as you don’t think about it for more than 15 seconds) into a support line for their flailing joint career as writer-directors. Now, just over a year after somehow making “Adam Driver Fights Dinosaurs” boring, Beck and Woods return with a new selling point unlikely to fail them quite as surprisingly as their previous one had.

When it comes to Halloween slashers, John Carpenter’s Halloween still reigns supreme all these years later. Not only did it launch an enduring franchise, but it inspired a slasher craze. Of course, it’s far from the only slasher movie set around our favorite holiday.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to Halloween slashers beyond the Halloween franchise that similarly bring the carnage and holiday spirit in equal measure.
These slashers unleash buckets of blood (and then some), using Halloween as a stunning backdrop for the mayhem, from pumpkins galore to haunt attractions from hell.

One can vividly remember the ‘golden’ days when Hugh Grant would be on our TV screens, wooing women with his charming blue eyes, electric smile, and impeccable line delivery in many of his romantic films. Those were the times when ‘romance’ was still very much ‘alive’ and ‘real’, thanks to the wicked charms of actors like Grant, his ‘arch-nemesis’ Colin Firth, Matthew McConaughey, and many, many more.

Banter is provocative and stimulating initially, sprawling the thousands of religions throughout history ... until it's not. Chatter escalates from awkward inquisitions to life-or-death questions, but more challenging genre elements fail to excite as Beck and Woods wring the spoken word dry of tension.
