As a franchise spanning multiple television series since 1966, Star Trek has brought countless memorable guest stars over the decades. However, not all guest stars are created equal, with several standing as clear highlights in their respective episodes. Whether it's one-and-done appearances or informal recurring roles, effective guest stars quickly are embraced as fan-favorites. In fact, some connect with the cast, crew, and audience so well, they've inadvertently steered the course of the franchise.
A great guest star gels seamlessly with the main cast and naturally elevates the story that they're appearing in. Rather than simply feeling like stunt casting, a guest role feels like an organic addition to the Star Trek franchise. For the purposes of this article, stars appearing on this list do not include actors who have appeared as series regulars on other Star Trek shows. Here are the 15 best guest stars on Star Trek, ranked in descending order.

Jonathan Banks is the kind of actor that automatically elevates whatever he's in. Many first discovered him through his role as fixer Mike Ehrmantraut on "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul," where his soulful performance helped audiences care deeply for a troubled man in a despicable line of work, while others found him through his role as cartoon duck drawing criminology professor Buzz Hickey in season 5 of the college sitcom "Community." He's a fantastic performer who brings some surprisingly different characters to life, and back in the 1990s, he stole the show in a guest role on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
"Deep Space Nine" often delved into darker topics than was typical for the "Star Trek" franchise, and in season 1, episode 12, "Battle Lines," several members of the DS9 crew were thrust into a truly unpleasant situation on a moon where the inhabitants cannot die. Banks stars as Golin Shel-la,...

Without the original series, Star Trek would not exist. That isn't much of a stretch to say. Nonetheless, over the past 59 years, that series has ultimately spawned a massive franchise with a vast, fertile tapestry of interesting stories featuring compelling characters and exciting settings. This has led me to wonder: What if things were different? What if we mixed up what we know? Let's speculate.
This first imagined mash-up we will consider is what it might have been like if James T. Kirk had commanded Deep Space 9. In the eponymous series, DS9 was commanded by Commander (later Captain) Benjamin Sisko and became embroiled in politics, religion, and war as it sat at a critical nexus between Bajor, Cardassian Space, and a wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant (and thus the Dominion).

"Star Trek" is full of incredible odd couple friendships, starting with the hot-tempered human Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and stoic half-Vulcan Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Kirk and Spock were a terrific pair because of how much they balanced one another and learned from each other, showing the deep bonds that can develop between very different people. Spock is even the one who helps Kirk begin to understand his racism against the Klingons in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," showing that even after decades together the two still have things to teach each other. Their friendship is a truly beautiful thing, but there is one notable factor: they are both in Starfleet, and from Federation planets. They may be very different, but they are never truly adversarial.

The Survey Corps in Attack on Titan dedicated their hearts to the battle for humankind, and admirably so. Whether it was the fearless and ruthless fighters like Levi and Mikasa, or those who fought with shaking legs and endless fear like Jean, every member of the Survey Corps put their lives on the line. Erwin served as the perfect leader as he could effortlessly communicate his vision to all the soldiers irrespective of their strength or standing.

I used to hate Jimmy Carter more than anything else in this world.
Let me explain.

After school, I fold and then deliver the Seattle Times on Whidbey Island, the second-largest island in the continental United States as our teachers like to remind us. In November, Amazon revealed they’re working on a Mass Effect TV series. Jennifer Hale, the voice behind Commander Shepard, recently told Eurogamer she’s eager to join the project and hopes the original cast can be part of it too.
Hale expressed her excitement, saying she’s always open to reprising her role as Shepard: ‘You will always get a yes vote from me on Shepard coming back in any form. That was such a gift, and it’s a gift I will always be extremely joyful to receive.’ One big question, though, is whether Shepard in the show will be male or female.
Hale isn’t one to tell creators what to do, but she’s clear on one thing: ‘The only thing I must say about that TV series is I want to play! Any capacity, I will be there with bells on!’ She also hinted she...

” When the Stars Gossip ” presents a unique narrative that blends a romantic comedy with a sci-fi backdrop. The series follows Gong Ryong, an Ob-gyn who gets involved in a task that combines his personal redemption with his scientific ambition on a space station in 2025. This unusual setting heightens the stakes and feelings and enables a compelling exploration of relationships.
Space is profoundly important as a backdrop. As the characters fight to balance ambition and love, it is a metaphor for loneliness and connection. Reflecting a generational shift toward more emotional storytelling, this cosmic setting is relevant to modern social fears.
The series is visually stunning, with cinematography that catches both space’s grandeur and personal space’s intimacy. The editing and sound design improve the narrative’s rhythm, which honors individual and group experiences. Ultimately, “When the Stars Gossip” follows conventional rules while quietly breaking them, making it a rich cultural artifact that merits exploration.

A fun bit of trivia: when "Gilligan's Island" was at the height of its popularity, sometime in 1965 show creator Sherwood Schwartz received a visit from one Commander Doyle of the United States Coast Guard. Evidently, the Commander was getting a lot of (jokey) telegrams from his officers, asking why a more concerted effort hadn't been made to locate and rescue Gilligan and his fellow castaways. This story was confirmed in a 1967 interview with the Sioux City Journal, handily transcribed by MeTV.
"Gilligan's Island," as TV history buffs may know, was a smashing success in its first two seasons, gathering as much attention from audiences as it did scorn from critics. Many saw "Gilligan's Island" as being too fluffy and frivolous, lacking any discernible edge. The series took place in a colorful cartoon world where there was no death or pain or real-world threats. The seven stranded castaways on Gilligan's Island never faced starvation,...

A series finale offers a show one last chance to make a grand statement about its core themes while offering a send-off to its main characters. However, just like a pilot episode, not all series finales are created equal, with some managing to stick the landing while others are dead on arrival. This certainly applies to the Star Trek franchise, which has steadily released several television series since its start in 1966. While Star Trek has provided fans with some of the best finales in TV history, other shows in the franchise have stumbled across the finish line.
In some cases, Star Trek shows have ended without their finale being planned to conclude a series run, with the cancelation decision made either during or after production. These finales are noticeably less satisfactory than the other series that have a planned coda, paying off on years of storytelling. But when Star Trek pulls off a solid finale,...

Lee Min-Ho and Kong Hyo-Jin starrer, When The Stars Gossip, finally graced our screens on the 4th of January 2025. Before we get into what happens in the episode, I’ve got to add that along with a stellar leading cast of familiar faces, the first episode has cameos from beloved stars Cho Jung-Seok (Hospital Playlist) and Park Jin-Joo (It’s Okay To Not Be Okay). Unlike what you’d imagine, this show is entirely unserious and finally uses Lee Min-Ho’s impeccable comic timing for some hands-on entertainment. He plays Gong Ryong, an obstetrician who ends up the potential son-in-law of the CEO of the largest conglomerate in Korea, the Mz Group. Somehow, this leads to Gong Ryong going to space as a “tourist” on a hush-hush mission, having paid 70 billion won (by his father-in-law). The mission is essentially for research on unresolved human crises like dementia and infertility. I think...

Because "Star Trek" takes place in a universe driven by pacifism, exploration, and diplomacy, it may be difficult to gauge which starships are the most "powerful." In superhero comics, action movies, and "Star Wars", the phrase "most powerful" often alludes to one's ability to do damage, to dominate, to overpower a foe. Starships on "Star Trek," however, aren't damage-inflicting machines. They may be equipped with phasers, photon torpedoes, and other hyper-advanced weapons systems, but a starship is rarely measured by its ability to do damage.
I suppose, if the U.S.S. Enterprise really wanted to, it could handily wipe out entire cities on its own, unleashing a fusillade of explosive energy beams from space. Several Federation starships, working together, could likely make an entire planet extinct within a matter of minutes. For Trekkies, though, it's more important to measure a ship's power by the power of its sensors, the power of its engines,...

Directed by Eli Roth, the film has faced a turbulent journey from production to release, with reshoots, delays, and a significant creative overhaul. Despite its star-studded cast, including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black, the movie has been met with overwhelmingly negative reviews, holding piss poor 9% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. When "Star Trek: Voyager" was in development in 1994, the franchise was running hot. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was making its way to the big screen in the form of "Star Trek: Generations," and its spinoff, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," was finding its stride at the beginning of its third season. "Deep Space Nine," however, was set on board a space station, and the franchise's head honchos felt that an additional "Trek" show should be created to incorporate more traditional star trekking. "Voyager" was set on board a Starfleet vessel, the U.S.S. Voyager, as it became stranded 75 years away from Earth.
Show creators Rick Berman, Michael Piller, and the recently late Jeri Taylor, while developing their series, decided they wanted the captain of the U.S.S. Voyager to be a woman, as all the previous lead "Star Trek" captains had been men. Captain Kathryn Janeway was created,...

From Dandadan to Solo Leveling, these five series have their iconic action scenes. Through their brilliant animation and action sequences, they easily match up to the iconic duel from One Piece.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End wasn’t supposed to be a massive hit in the Shonen genre. This is especially true with the series being a gag manga initially. But most of...

Endings are tricky. Part of a satisfying ending comes from having an adequate set-up. Part of it comes from feeling like a culmination of all that has come before. A lot of it comes from feeling like the characters have been well served. The worst kind of endings, in my opinion, are those where the characters' journeys are lost amid a plot.
Fortunately, Star Trek: Lower Decks has received a fair ending, even if it was sooner than it deserved. Things have changed by the end of the episode, but there is a sense of optimism—fitting for any Star Trek series—and hope that the door is open for more adventures to come.
Episode summary
Continuing directly from last week's episode, "The New Next Generation" shows us a fleet of Klingon ships, led by Captain Relga, be the first to encounter the new, massive dimensional rift sent to the prime universe by William Boimler.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for the "Star Trek: Lower Decks" series finale.
In the final episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," titled "The New Next Generation," the U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with sealing up a massive rift in the space-time continuum. Although the ship is dated and under-equipped, they're the only Federation vessel in range, and if the rift isn't dealt with post-haste, it could rend the very fabric of space-time asunder. It's all very serious, so the Cerritos bravely charges to the rescue.
As the Cerritos crew approaches the rift, however, they have to sail through waves of twisted semi-interdimensional space. Each wave is a potential cataclysm, as they change the Cerritos into various parallel universe versions of itself. The crew remains largely intact, protected by special shielding, but the ship itself changes its class and size several times within the span of a few minutes.

Star Trek star George Takei has long been vocal about current president-elect Donald Trump’s policies. The actor has been a strong advocate for issues faced by Asian Americans and the LGBTQ+ community and has criticized Trump’s statements regarding the community even during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Takei especially referred to Trump’s statements at the time where the latter called it as a ‘Chinese virus’ which the Star Trek actor attributed to various violent attacks on Asian Americans at the time. He particularly spoke about an incident that occurred in Oakland where an elderly Thai man was attacked.

Bleach is known for its epic battles, intense character development, and intricate lore. From the casual friendship to heart-breaking tales, Bleach has got them all. However, the series has many characters that were unfairly sidelined due to seemingly no reason and a prime example of this is Chojiro Sasakibe, the loyal lieutenant of the 1st Division under Captain-Commander Yamamoto.
Chojiro Sasakibe | Studio Pierrot
There is no question that Sasakibe was a man of incredible strength, strong enough to scar Yamamoto himself. Sasakibe was touted to be strong enough in his own right to be made captain but refused to work under Yamamoto. It has such an impressive background, and this character is shown facing defeat against Ichigo Kurosaki early in the series.
This baffling inconsistency doesn’t make sense, not to mention how such a powerful figure was treated so poorly. Chojiro Sasakibe may not have been the strongest...

The final episode of "Star Trek: Enterprise," called "These Are the Voyages...", was met with controversy when it first aired and still isn't particularly beloved to this day. "Enterprise," it should be recalled, was one of the least popular of the "Star Trek" shows to date, lasting a mere four seasons while its three immediate predecessors lasted seven seasons each. At the end of the show, the makers of "Enterprise" felt a panicked need to wrap up the series in a neat little bow, as well as find a way to tie the series into extant "Trek" lore at large.
As such, the premise for "These Are the Voyages..." felt strained. The episode added bizarre bookend material set in the year 2370 during the events of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Pegasus," depicting Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) using a holodeck to recreate the events "Star Trek: Enterprise" so...

Jim Carrey was absolutely covered in prosthetic makeup for How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but his famous rubber face couldn’t be contained, and the actor used the wonderful makeup to great effect. However, Carrey was not a fan of the makeup process, likening it to “being buried alive.” That said, it is a role he would love to return to, provided they could figure out an alternate makeup process.
Carrey recently spoke with ComicBook.com and was asked which character he would love to play again. “Oh, gosh, you know, if we could figure out the Grinch,” Carrey said. “The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now,...

Two years ago, Jim Carrey said he was retiring unless “the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink,” but the actor returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Does this mean the Sonic sequel was that magical gold ink script? Not quite.
“That night’ve been hyperbole, yeah,” said Carrey when asked about his past comments on the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 red carpet. “I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.“
Carrey naturally reprised his role of Dr. Ivo Robotnik for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but he actually pulls double duty as Gerald Robotnik, Ivo’s grandfather and the creator of Shadow the Hedgehog. Director Jeff Fowler knew they wanted Carrey to play both roles, but he acknowledged...

History has shown us that video game movies rarely work. Sure, there are a few notable exceptions, but I never expected Sonic the Hedgehog to be one of them. But here we are, with the first reactions to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 praising it as the best of the trilogy.
Collider’s Steven Weintraub said Sonic the Hedgehog 3 “is definitely the best one yet. The addition of Shadow (voiced by Keanu Reeves) adds a great antagonist that isn’t empty calories. But the reason to see the Sonic movies is Jim Carrey. He’s such a brilliant performer and he never gives less than his everything. Was a lot of fun watching him play off himself. He plays two roles in the sequel.“

In the bleak embrace of Roquenoir, a small town steeped in eerie silence, the air is filled with secrets and shadows. This is a place where the trees appear to hint at an old dread, a folklore that runs through the veins of its inhabitants—the legend of the Soul Eater, a tall, horned phantom who devours souls and preys on the innocent.
The myth hangs over the town like a shroud, embodying the fears of a community long accustomed to its grim fate, where the line between reality and nightmare blurs, encouraging reflection on the nature of evil itself.
Amidst this sombre backdrop, a series of heinous murders threatens the fragile tranquillity, coupled with the frightening disappearance of children. The narrative unfolds when Commander Elisabeth Guardiano and Captain Franck De Rolan arrive to unravel this diabolical tapestry, each carrying their own issues.

Jay-Z has been accused of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000 in a lawsuit that also alleges Sean “Diddy” Combs took part in the act, according to NBC News.
For his part, the rapper-mogul — whose real name is Shawn Carter — responded that the claims are “idiotic” and part of a “blackmail attempt.”
In the lawsuit, the accuser, identified only as “Jane Doe,” alleges Carter and Combs raped her at a house party after the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, which took place in New York, NBC News reported.
The lawsuit, which was first filed in October in the Southern District of New York, originally listed Combs as a defendant. It was refiled Sunday to include Carter. Attorney Tony Buzbee, who filed the suit, also has filed numerous suits against Combs in the past several months.

At the Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia Sunday, Brendan Fraser paid tribute to the emotional support provided by his horse Pecas – which means “freckles” in Spanish – during the years when his career looked to be finished.
Speaking about how he spent those fallow years, he said: “I had a horse for a while there. He’s not with us anymore, I’m sad to say. He’s in horsey heaven. He saved… not my life, but he certainly saved an emotional part of me.”
Fraser explained that Pecas had been one of the horses that featured in 2015 miniseries “Texas Rising” and after the shoot ended Fraser adopted him. “I put him on FedEx. I flew him through El Paso. I dropped him off at JFK. He came. He walked right into the barn close to my home, where I’d rented a stall for him, and he happily...

Despite visual continuity clearly indicating that "Upper Decks" is meant to have been released in this order, something tells me that this episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5 was initially intended as a Halloween episode. Despite releasing in early December, this was a fun episode.
Episode summary
At the start of the episode, we find our Lower Deckers together, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns. There are a few fun jokes and references, like Rutherford carving a pumpkin to look like V'Ger, and Mariner comments that all of the excitement on the Cerritos happens when she and the other Lower Deckers are around, thinking this is counter to how it is on most ships.
After this scene, we transition to Captain Freeman and the bridge crew having a staff meeting. We then follow the various members of the bridge crew as they go throughout their day. Freeman herself mostly has to...

Writer-director Tyler Perry takes a step up as a versatile filmmaker in bringing Netflix’s inspiring World War II-set true story The Six Triple Eight to the screen to tell the largely untold story of the Women’s Army Corps Unit of Color and their heroic and important achievement during the war in Europe in 1945. This unit was made up of more than 855 women of color, mostly Black women who endured racism, sexism, grueling weather and conditions far beneath their male counterparts, only to become uncelebrated heroes after being deployed to England, then France in order to make sure the letters from and back to home for soldiers landed in the right hands.

It’s official—Duck Dynasty fans have a reason to celebrate. Seven years after the popular reality series ended its 11-season run on A&e, Willie Robertson has announced that the show is making a comeback.
During a recent appearance on The Tucker Carlson Show, Robertson revealed that he and his family are “getting back in production” for a new series, which he described as “the next generation of Duck Dynasty.”
Reflecting on the timing of the reboot, Robertson shared how much has changed since the original series concluded in 2017. “So my kids are older,” he explained. “Well, 2017 to 2024… a lot’s happened. The cast has grown up. So yeah, back with A&e, we met, and they said, ‘Hey, are you guys interested in kinda redoing the show?’ And it felt like the time was right… met with the family, prayed about it, and said, ‘Yeah, I think so.’ The kids were excited.

One Piece is celebrated for its riveting storyline and arcs and Marineford is most certainly one of them with its shocking events and revelations. This includes Ace’s death, which proved to be the catalyst for Luffy’s growth.
But most of all, the arc had its moments of brilliance with side characters and their combat prowess. In one of the iconic face-offs between two legendary pirates, fans often misinterpreted an iconic statement by Mihawk.
Whitebeard in a still from the anime | Credit: Toei Animation
Of late, several fans took to X to address the true meaning along with the mistranslation of his statement. While most fans speculated him to be fearful of Whitebeard, that was not the case.
The thread recenters our focus to a major aspect of the arc. Of all the arcs in Eiichiro Oda’s series, Marineford played a major role in catalyzing the future events.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Cause and Effect", the U.S.S. Enterprise-d enters a recurring time loop, forcing the people on board to relive the same day over and over again. At the start of the day, several members of the senior staff gather for a game of poker. At the end of the day, the Enterprise collides with a mysterious other ship and explodes, killing everyone on board. When time resets, the Enterprise crew has no memory of what happened.
Of course, thanks to some elaborate clues, the crew does eventually find out what's happening, and even develop a means to sent additional clues backward into the next time loop. In the next repetition, the crew finally deciphers their own hints and escapes the loop by dodging the mysterious ship. Once freed, the Enterprise-d contacts that ship, and finds it is the U.S.S.

Shunsui is currently in a battle with Lille Barro, the leader of Yhwach’s elite guard, Schutzstaffel. Episode 9 of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War part 3 saw Shunsui bring out his Bankai, and there was a weird connection between Shunsui and his Bankai, Katen Kyokotsu: Karamatsu Shinju. This connection made fans question Shunsui’s relationship with Katen Kyokotsu.
While anime fans won’t know about Shunsui and Katen’s connection, manga fans might have a little bit of knowledge about how it is believed that Shunsui had an intimate relationship with Katen.
