Back then, no one was expecting The Descent to go on and become one of the most widely acclaimed horror films of the decade. Even today, Neil Marshall’s second creature-feature (the first being Dog Soldiers) remains a favorite among audiences and critics everywhere. This iconic film defies those expectations based on its cast and pitch — not a man in sight as six women battle a clan of cave-dwelling monsters — and then delivers a thoughtful study of friendships, grief, and survival.
So when a sequel was announced, fans’ curiosity and anticipation turned into nervousness once it was revealed that Marshall was neither directing nor writing the follow-up. Instead, the first film’s editor, Jon Harris, was promoted to director, and the script was handled by James McCarthy, J Blakeson, and James Watkins. Other details about The Descent Part 2 were scant prior to its 2009 release, but after it was finally seen,...

It’s safe to say horror westerns don’t have the best track record. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a good amount of decent examples out there such as Grim Prarie Tales, Ravenous, Dead Birds and The Burrowers. But there’s also a Lot of bad horror westerns, two of which – Gallowalkers and Umbrage – debuted at Frightfest’s of the past. Given that, it was with a sense of trepidation that I approached Blood Moon…
Set in Colorado in 1887, Blood Moon sees a stagecoach full of strange passengers and an enigmatic gunslinger Calhoun (Dooley) find themselves prisoners of two desperate outlaws on the run. As the prairie travellers attempt to outwit the outlaws in any way they can it soon...

Film4 FrightFest will be screening a record twenty short films, twelve of them world premieres, at this year’s August event at the Vue West End, Leicester Square – including the latest from director Federico Zampaglione entitled Remember, the Fiona Dourif starring She (which I backed on Kickstarter many moons ago) and the second Jessica Cameron-starring production showing at Frightfest, the UK-lensed short The Tour.

Tagline: "When it's red, you're dead." Blood Moon is a film from director Jeremy Wooding and writer Alan Wightman. Wightman developed this feature from a short film, of the same name. Blood Moon is currently in Cannes; here, the film had its World Premiere. Now, a concept poster and several stills are available for this horror, western feature. Passengers of a nearby stagecoach must also deal with this murderous creature, which only comes out during the blood red moon (to feed)! The film stars George Blagden (After the Dark), Ian Whyte (Prometheus) and Anna Skellern. These actors can be seen in three early stills, which are shown below. The movie stills show characters stalked by a sharp taloned monster.

The Musketeers delves further into Athos' past in episode three. Here's Rob's review of Commodities...
This review contains spoilers.
1.3 Commodities
Commodities sees The Musketeers head in a different direction from its opening episodes. With style, characters and setting largely established it is perhaps unsurprising that writer Adrian Hodges decided to add some darker layers to what had been up to now, the very bright personalities of the Musketeers themselves. The series has won a lot of people over with its fun and adventurous take on this well-loved story, any departure – especially so soon in the season – could therefore be considered risky. The question is, will the change win over those critics who wanted a little more drama with their swashbuckling?

At this point I feel I should add "For Found Footage Format Fans Only" in big, bold letters at the start of certain film reviews. (Like the current one, the blandly titled A Night in the Woods.) Put quite simply, there have to be over a hundred of these "micro-budget, handheld, most improvised, shot in a nearby forest" movies that have hit the shelves in the last five years -- and one certainly couldn't blame a horror fan for simply lumping most of them together and dismissing the entire "first-person shaky cam" format completely. But for those of us who think there's actually some novelty, promise, and innate creepiness to be found in these movies (to say nothing of the writers who cover horror films and try to separate the crap from the quality for other folks), well, here's another one. A Night in the Woods. Three young (and rather...

Those of us who have stuck with Heading Out have often wondered what it would come down to in this final episode, wherein Sara finally gets the showdown with her parents that the entire series has been built around. A lot of folks guessed that either Sara’s parents would already know she was gay or wouldn’t be surprised; I also wondered if there would be room for the sitcom to grow once this premise was played out. And in these aspects, I have to say, well done, Sue Perkins! We were all wrong!
We start the episode with Daniel and Sara giving each other a hard time per usual at the vet office, which I actually don’t mind as much as I usually do in vet scenes, perhaps because there aren’t any distracting and ridiculous client plotlines involved this time. And maybe...

Much of our fourth episode of Heading Out takes place in Sara’s vet practice, which as I’ve mentioned before tends to produce some of my least favorite bits. Yet overall, I found this episode much funnier than the last one, and a lot of that has to do with Nicola Walker.
We start with Sara and Daniel going over some inventory at the office, which includes checking off things like “Hampster Snuggle Pouch.” Again, the props, they’re good! Also, a Hampster Snuggle Pouch: that sounds pretty awesome, actually. Do they make them in human size?
I also enjoyed this:
Sara: One Supreme Gerbil Fortress, one Supreme Gerbil Palace.
Daniel: Check. Oh, hang on. No fortress.
Sara: Well, that’s fine. I’ve got the palace, so I’m happy.
Daniel: No, but they’re not the same thing. A palace is just a posh house.

In Episode Trois of Heading Out, we really start to dig into Sara’s deep neuroses, to satisfying but often frustrating degrees. There’s also a lot of French going on, to satisfying but often frustrating degrees.
We begin in Sara’s living room, where Jamie’s reading a book and Justine’s watching a quiz show on the telly — she’s sold her own TV “to save for a new DVD player” — and guessing “Dick Francis” for every answer. She assures Sara that it’ll be the right answer someday; it’s just a matter of waiting. Justine is the best. Short aside: This reminds me of when I used to frequently play Cranium with some friends, like more than most normal people play Cranium, and every time we had to sculpt something out of that purple clay one of our friends would yell, “Clay!

This really weird thing has happened. The BBC is airing a show about a 40-year-old woman finally being pushed by her friends to come out to her parents. Sounds normal enough, but get this: it’s a comedy! Wait. Lesbians can be funny? Shut the front door, Sue Perkins!

We’ve just been sent this brilliant first clip from new British comedy I Give it a Year. The movie has a wonderful cast and when you see this clip, you’ll really get a sense of the tone they’re trying to set with it. The film stars Anna Faris, Rose Byrne, Simon Baker, Rafe Spall, Stephen Merchant, Craig Izzard, Minnie Driver, Olivia Colman, Anna Skellern and Jason Flemyng, the latter stealing the show in this first clip which I’ve embedded below. Dan Mazer directs what must have been a wonderfully funny movie to make.

I gotta think Cameron Diaz’s Texas cowboy character is a put-on in this remake of “Gambit”. It’s gotta be some kind of ploy and she’s purposefully doing an atrocious “Texan” accent, and we find out at the end of the movie that she was a New York chick all along trying to pull a con (besides the obvious con with Alan Rickman, I mean). If that isn’t the case, then oh boy… Anyways. Check out three clips from “Gambit”. It’s wacky. It’s accent-heavy. It’s got Colin Firth with wet stands on the front of his trousers. Hijinks! It’s been sad times in the UK lately as lesbians across the land come to terms with the fact that the continued no-news from the BBC about Lip Service is making the chance of a Series 3 look as dead in the water as Cat in the road. This is a good time to urge you to sign the petition.
In the meantime we need a bit of good news, so what if we told you that Anna Skellern (Lexy) was to play gay again in a show written by, and starring the baking hot Sue Perkins alongside Shelley Conn, who once locked lips with Laura Fraser in Nina’s Heavenly Delights? Well, this is exactly what we’re telling you. This is happening in real life.

However, Dean himself becomes enraptured with her, causing his plan to take a series of wrong turns.
Gambit, written by Joel and Ethan Coen, directed by Michael Hoffman (Restoration, A Midsummer Night’s Dream), also stars Alan Rickman, Tom Courtenay, Stanley Tucci, Cloris Leachman, Anna Skellern, and Togo Igawa.

Apparently today is the day for releasing trailers featuring actors doing, er, questionable Southern accents. First it was Emma Thompson in the “Beautiful Creatures” trailer, and now it’s Cameron Diaz going way, Way overboard with her “Texan” accent in “Gambit”. The film, a remake of the 1966 film starring Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine, boasts a kooky script from Ethan and Joel Coen, but is directed by Michael Hoffman, just so you don’t get confused. Diaz’s ridiculous accent notwithstanding, “Gambit” looks like a goofy good time at the theaters. Or at least, on DVD. An art curator decides to seek revenge on his abusive boss by conning him into buying a fake Monet, but his plan requires the help of an eccentric and unpredictable Texas rodeo queen. “Gambit” also stars Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Tom Courtenay, Stanley Tucci, Cloris Leachman, Anna Skellern, and Togo Igawa. A Night In The Woods
Stars: Scoot McNairy, Anna Skellern, Andrew Hawley | Written and Directed by Richard Parry
Reading the title of the film gives it all away really, A Night in the Woods. That’s what this film is and pretty much that is what happens, three characters spend A Night in the Woods and we get to see the footage found afterwards. Sounds a bit like The Blair Witch Project doesn’t it? Well you may just be right.
Brody and his girlfriend Kerry are taking a trip into Dartmoor’s Wistman’s Woods with her “cousin” Leo. The local villagers in the pub give them stories about the woods and it’s dubious past which they laugh off as they make their way onto the moors, then into the woods themselves. What is found is the footage of what happened that night as sexual tension runs high,...

Anna Karenina (12A)
(Joe Wright, 2012, UK/Fra) Keira Knightley, Kelly Macdonald, Jude Law, 130 mins
Bringing period drama up-to-date, Wright's radical reinterpretation of Tolstoy's tragedy stages the action almost entirely in a theatre – backstage areas, red curtains and all. It's a smart framing device for the Imperial Russia on display, even if the stylisation puts emotion at a slight remove, not helped by the love-or-loathe leads. But it's still a sight to behold, with rich colours, doll's-house sets and costumes to die for (spoiler alert!).
Dredd (18)
(Pete Travis, 2012, UK) Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Rakie Ayola. 95 mins
Aiming to please old 2000Ad fans rather than convert new ones, this post-apocalyptic sci-fi has all the violent justice and jutting-chin action you'd want, with some visual flourishes to make up for a straightahead plot.
Lawless (18)
(John Hillcoat, 2012, Us) Tom Hardy, Shia Labeouf, Guy Pearce. 116 mins

heck out a lovely-looking Cameron Diaz in the latest character poster for Ethan and Joel Coen's Gambit comedy, also starring Colin Firth and Alan Rickman. The crime comedy helmed by Michael Hoffman (The Last Station, One Fine Day, Soapdish) tells of an art curator who decides to take revenge on his abusive boss by conning him into buying a fake Monet. His plan however, requires the aid of an unpredictable Texas rodeo queen. This joins the previous two character posters for Alan Rickman and Colin Firth we added recently. Cloris Leachman, Anna Skellern, Tom Courtenay and Togo Igawa co-star.

A good-looking British entry burrows more deeply into character than the average found-footage foray into the woods
Another week, another found-footage horror. This good-looking, creditably tangled Brit entry benefits from a better-than-average jolt-count and rigorous, dirty-fingernails acting from Scoot McNairy (Monsters) and Anna Skellern as a troubled couple – he's a garrulous Yank, she's a repressed Brit – using their handicams as digital confidants whileon a camping tour of Dartmoor; an opening title card informs us that the pair, along with Skellern's cousin Leo (Andrew Hawley), subsequently disappeared. Richard Parry's film suffers from a certain post-Blair Witch familiarity as the night-vision gets toggled, and evidence of a local legend ("the Huntsman") is discovered dangling from the trees. Yet it's unusual in using its 80-odd minutes to burrow down into these characters and match their psychic states with the (still underfilmed) location's physical terrain: one way or another, these relationships will end up on the rocks.

More “Blair Witch Project” style shenanigans arrive in the form of “A Night in the Woods”, a British effort which could at least never be accused of not living up to its title, following a trio of the usual types wandering around the moors and forests of Northern England. The found footage film was directed by Richard Parry (“South West 9”), who previously worked as a conflict zone cameraman, helming various documentaries in Iraq and Afghanistan, with cinematography by Simon Dennis (“The Sweeney”), and the international cast of American star Scoot McNairy (“Monsters”), Australian actress Anna Skellern (“The Descent: Part 2”) and up and coming British actor Andrew Hawley (“Snow White And The Huntsman”). The Vertigo Films release is set for a brief run in UK cinemas in early September, arriving shortly afterwards on DVD. The very recognisable plot follows an American called Brody (Scoot McNairy), his girlfriend Kerry (Anna Skellern...

Having never been in a high security mental institution I can only imagine what the interaction between cook and patient really is. I keep thinking of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest… Nurse Ratchet. McMurphy. Chief. It would seem to me it’s a rather humorous place to be if you just take the Ken Kesey angle (until Billy kills himself… then it’s no fun for anyone). Maybe the institution of Asylum Blackout is more like Arkham Asylum from the world of Batman. Dark. Demented. The patients ready to get out and exact revenge, insanely, on a staff that cared too little. Mostly I think of the thorazine shuffle. I think of heavily medicated folks drooling on themselves meandering about their padded cell. With that in mind, when I tell you that Asylum Blackout didn’t quite do it for me, it’s not for the lack of...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by IFC Midnight. Director: Alexandre Courtès. Writers: S. Craig Zahler, and Jérôme Fansten. Cast: Anna Skellern, Rupert Evans and Dave Legeno. The Asylum Blackout creates the right atmosphere for a horror feature. There are dark halls, mutilated corpses and the criminally insane hiding out in every dark corridor. The environment is chilling; yet, something is missing. The writing follows a linear structure with few deviations. This is director Alexandre Courtes' first feature with writer Craig Zahler also creating his first script here. So, understandably, the writing is cautious. The contradiction between the thrilling settings with the straight forward approach to writing still creates for an entertaining time. The plot structure is fairly simple. Three friends and bandmates work at the local Sans Mental Institution in Washington, State. Here, they feed the crazed and hungry. Then, the crazed feed on the.
