Swiss cite lack of local production in Oscar pass
CANNES -- Switzerland on Wednesday explained why the country declined to submit a film for consideration in the 2004 foreign-language Oscar race, saying there was no local production this year that was ready and of suitable size for such an international competition. The Swiss interior ministry said only three local films qualified for Oscar consideration. Of these, Dominique de Rivaz's "Mein Name Ist Bach" (My Name Is Bach) was disqualified as it will be released in Switzerland next year, too late for this year's Oscars. The other two films -- Jean-Francois Amiguet's "Au sud des nuages", which screened in competition at Locarno, and the winner of this year's Swiss Film Prize, "On dirait le sud", from director Vincent Pluss -- were judged "too small" for the U.S. market, Swiss officials said. Although Switzerland produces only a handful of films per year, the tiny European country won the 1990 best foreign-film Oscar for Xavier Koller's "Journey of Hope" in 1990.
