In “Àma Gloria,” directed by Marie Amachoukeli, childhood is the domain of formative gains and losses. After opening this year’s Cannes Critics’ Week, the film screened as part of the Meet the Neighbors+ competition at the Thessaloniki Film Festival. Amachoukeli previously co-directed “Party Girl,” which won Cannes’ Camera d’Or in 2014.

“Àma Gloria” introduces us to six-year-old Cléo (Louise Mauroy-Panzani), who lives in Paris with her widower dad Arnaud (Arnaud Rebotini) and her nanny Gloria (Ilça Moreno Zego). A blissfully constructed day-to-day routine keeps the world in order until one day Gloria has to return to her Cape Verdean family. In preparation to leave France for good, she invites Cléo to spend the summer with her in Cape Verde.

Marie Amachoukeli’s Ama Gloria has won the Best International Film Prize at the 40th edition of the Jerusalem Film Festival, running from July 13 to July 26.

The feature, which world premiered as the opening film of Cannes Critics’ Week in May, revolves around a motherless six-year-old girl who travels to Cape Verde to reunite with her longtime nanny.

The jury presided over by Claire Denis, and also figuring Whit Stillman, Florian Zeller, Joana Vicente, and Maria Schrader praised the film’s “extraordinary poignancy, beauty and insight”.

Ama Gloria is produced by Bénédicte Couvreur, the long-time producer of Céline Sciamma and her films Petite Maman and Portrait Of A Lady On Fire.

Other winners in the International Competition include Best Director for Mexico’s Lila Avilés for Berlinale-selected family drama Totem and a Special Mention for the ensemble cast of Argentinian director Rodrigo Moreno’s The Delinquents, which debuted in Un Certain Regard this year.

BFI Distribution has picked up Marie Amachoukeli’s Cannes Critics’ Week opener Ama Gloria for the UK and Ireland. The French drama was acquired from Pyramide International.

The film, which is set to be released in 2024, explores the close relationship between a six-year-old girl and her nanny as they spend their last summer together in Cape Verde.

Pyramide has also sold the film to Transformer in Japan, Hugoeast in China, Cinéart in Benelux, Alambique in Portugal, Ama Films in Greece, Surtsey in Spain, and I Wonder in Italy.

Eva Vik’s ‘Serpentine’ Starring Barbara Palvin To Make European Premiere at Taormina

Eva Vik’s short film Serpentine, starring supermodel Barbara Palvin, will make its European premiere at the 69th edition of Italy’s Taormina Film Festival, running from June 23 to July 1. Czech writer and director Eva Vik explores the possibilities of interspecies development in the film, which was previously nominated for the X Award at the Tribeca Film Festival. Set within a mysterious snake cult, the stylistic body-horror follows attempts to initiate a snake-human hybrid through genetic engineering – creating an extraterrestrial higher power intelligence as a new influential force. The 75th Ee British Academy Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Film Awards took place Sunday March 13. Over 7,000 voting members submitted their ballots, voting from nominees that looked a bit more like those for the Oscars than in some years past. The entire winners list has now been revealed.

The awards ceremony is airing as of 3:00pm Et Sunday on a one-hour delay for U.S. viewers on Britbox, can you still tune in. And a note on the streamer says it will replay in full there at 7:00pm Et.

The Ee British Academy Film (BAFTA) Awards today announced the nominations for the 2022 awards.

Unsurprisingly, Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi thriller ‘Dune,’ earned 11 nominations, most of which fall under the technical sections. Jane Campion’s Netflix western ‘The Power of the Dog’ racked up eight nominations, while Kenneth Branagh’s personal coming-of-age drama ‘Belfast’received six. ‘No Time to Die,’ picked up five nods, alongside Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1970s-set ‘Licorice Pizza’ and Steven Spielberg’s musical reboot ‘West Side Story.’

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced its official 2022 nominees, marking the event’s 75th anniversary. This year’s nominations were broadcast live from BAFTA 195 Piccadilly in central London on Thursday, February 3. Film Awards red carpet hosts Aj Odudu and Tom Allen listed all the noms.

This year, the most nominated films are “Dune” with 11 nods; “The Power of the Dog” with eight; “Belfast” with six; and “Licorice Pizza,” “West Side Story,” and “No Time to Die” all with five nominations each.

There are also the highest number of women nominated, ever.

The BAFTAs are set to take place on Sunday, March 13 at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall. Sponsored by Ee, the Awards will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One, BBC One HD and BBC iPlayer that evening, and will be preceded by live red carpet coverage on BAFTA’s social channels.

Over 7,000 members voted for this year’s nominations.

Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster Dune led the Bafta Film Awards nominations from Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, with the nominations announced today.

Dune received 11 nominations, including in best film, adapted screenplay, original score, and all eight technical categories.

Mubi has acquired all UK-Ireland rights to Céline Sciamma’s Petite Maman, which had its world premiere at last week’s online Berlin Film Festival.

Changes in local financing coupled with new opportunities in global distribution have pushed the French industry towards a more international outlook, argued panelists at a Tuesday round table presented as part of UniFrance’s Rendez-vous With French Cinema.

“[For certain French producers] ‘international’ used to mean who would take care of their talent when they travelled,” said film exporter Nicolas Brigaud-Robert. “[Only] today, with the way that we finance films having changed, that concern is much more widespread.”

Throughout the export focused talk – which brought together sales agents Brigaud-Robert of Playtime, and Emilie Georges of Memento, producer Bénédicte Couvreur of Lilies Films, and Cnc exec Mathieu Fournet – the panelists detailed the ways French actors could seize international opportunities.

Following on the heels of critical smash “Portrait of a Young Lady on Fire,” Celine Sciamma has just started shooting her next film, “Petite maman,” in Paris.

Although the plot is under wraps, the movie will deal with childhood and will star two eight-year-old kids, according to Les Inrocks magazine.

Sciamma is re-teaming with her regular producer Bénédicte Couvreur at Lilies Films, and MK2 Films, which will handle international sales on the film. Paris-based mk2 films has unveiled a fresh round of sales on three of the five Palme d’Or contenders on its Cannes 2019 slate; Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, Sibyl and The Whistlers.

Neon and Hulu have acquired the North American rights to Céline Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” which premiered Sunday at the Cannes Film Festival in competition, the companies announced Wednesday.

Neon is planning that the love story will get a theatrical release later this year, along with an awards campaign planned for all categories.

Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” stars Noémie Merlant, Adèle Haenel, Luana Bajrami and Valeria Golino and is set in 1770 in the French region of Brittany. Hot off a widely well-received premiere this weekend — with IndieWire’s own David Ehrlich hailing it as “a painterly masterpiece” — Céline Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” has locked down North American distribution, care of Neon and Hulu as part of their exclusive film and content output licensing agreement.

Neon will release the film this year, boasting a “traditional theatrical release” for the sumptuous period romance, and will also pursue an awards campaign in all categories. The boutique distributor reportedly beat out a number of other bidders, including both Sony Pictures Classics and Netflix.

Céline Sciamma’s (Girlhood) well-received Cannes Competition drama Portrait Of A Lady On Fire has sold to Neon and Hulu for North America in a competitive situation.

Adèle Haenel (The Unknown Girl), Noémie Merlant (Heaven Will Wait), Luana Bajrami (School’s Out) and Valeria Golina (Human Capital) star in the French-language film about a female painter commissioned to paint a wedding portrait of a young, reluctant bride on an isolated island in Northern France at the end of the eighteenth century. The painting must be done without the subject’s knowledge.

Pic was sold by mk2 and the pact falls into the output deal between Neon and Hulu. Neon is planning a theatrical release, which is set to include an awards campaign in all categories.

The deal was negotiated by Jeff Deutchman on behalf of Neon and Hulu and Fionnuala Jamison from mk2 films on behalf of the filmmakers. mk2 films has world rights.

Film4 has received a total of 41 nominations for the films it has backed at this year.s British Independent Film Awards, including six for Justin Kurzel's Macbeth.

Macbeth is in contention for best British independent film, best director, lead actor Michael Fassbender, lead actress Marion Cotillard, support actor Sean Harris and cinematographer Adam Arkapaw.

The film will soon be available on Amazon Prime Video in an exclusive streaming deal negotiated by the Us distributor, the Weinstein Co. According to one report that deal is worth $US4 million.. Macbeth opens in limited theatrical release in the Us on December 4.

Another film co-produced by See-Saw Films, Slow West, scored a nomination for John Maclean as best debut director.

Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Lobster topped this year’s Moet British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) nominations, which were presented in London this morning (Nov 3) by Gemma Chan and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

The film garnered seven nods including Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Producer of the Year.

Andrew Haigh’s 45 Years and Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth both received six nominations each, receiving acting nods for stars Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay for the former, and Marion Cotillard and Michael Fassbender for the latter.

Asif Kapadi’s documentary Amy, which told the story of the late singer Amy Winehouse, received five nominations, as did John Crowley’s period drama Brooklyn.

Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise and Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette each received four nominations.

This year’s European Film Awards are officially out of the gates with a not so lean 50 film submissions to select from. NEW YORK -- Koch Lorber Films and Red Envelope Entertainment have acquired all North American rights to the French coming-of-age drama Water Lilies (La Naissance des pieuvres).

Writer-director Celine Sciamma's first film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the Festival de Cannes this May. It follows the romantic trials and tribulations of three teen girls on a synchronized swimming team near Paris. Lilies stars Pauline Acquart, Louise Blachere and Adele Haenel, and was produced by Jerome Dopffer and Benedicte Couvreur.

Koch Lorber plans to screen the film in several U.S. fests before an early 2008 New York release, followed by a national theatrical rollout. Red Envelope parent company Netflix will offer a day-and-date video release with Koch Lorber DVD later next year.

Koch Lorber head Rochard Lorber and Red Envelope head of acquisitions and distribution Liesl Copland negotiated the deal for theatrical, home entertainment, television and digital rights with Film Distribution's Nicolas Brigaud-Robert and Didar Domehri.
