Kate Grimond (the Honourable Mrs John Grimond) was born Katherine
Fleming, elder daughter of Peter Fleming, travel writer (and elder
brother of Ian Fleming) by his wife the actress Celia Johnson. She was
educated at Cranbrook Chase School from 1959, and then studied Russian
at St Anne's House, Oxford. In 1973, she married John "Johnnie"
Grimond, later foreign editor of the British news magazine The Economist.
He was the elder son and the middle child of Joseph "Jo" Grimond (later
Lord Grimond, as a Life Peer), who led the Liberal Party in the 1960s.
His mother was the former Laura Bonham Carter, daughter of Violet,
Baroness Bonham Carter (a Life Peeress in her own right) and
granddaughter of the former British Prime Minister H.H. Asquith, later
1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith. Laura's niece is the actress Helena
Bonham Carter, daughter of her younger brother Raymond.
Johnnie and Kate Grimond have three children. Kate Grimond and her sister Lucy Williams (the actress Lucy Fleming) bought out the rights to Ian Fleming's estate in 1996 or 1997.
