Just recently released by Beehive Books, following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Pinocchio: The Illuminated Edition is a uniquely immersive experience that I'd highly recommed to Daily Dead readers. Not just a traditional reprint of Carlo Collodi's work, this "Illuminated Edition" has Mike Mignola teaming up with Lemony Snicket for illustrations and handwritten commentary that create an all-together new experience for this classic tale.
Whether you're a long-time fan of Pinocchio or are reading the story for the first time, The Illuminated Edition offer something new and exciting, and Beehive Books have really produced a high-quality edition that you can proudly display in any book collection. As someone who has read the original book, and have seen many adaptations over the years, I was impressed by how new this story felt with accompanied by Mignola's vision for the characters and the world, combined with Snicket's commentary. Noah is an adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. In a world ravaged by human sin, Noah is given a divine mission: to build an Ark to save creation from the coming flood. Subject to divine visions foretelling the end of the world, Noah attempts to tell his people to cease their mistreatment of the earth in order to be saved. No one listens to his warnings, and Noah and his family are cast out to fend for themselves in the wilderness. Noah approaches a race of giant six-armed angels known as the Watchers to rally them to his cause. Darren Aronofsky has put together a new art exhibit titled 'Fountains of the Deep: Visions of Noah and the Flood' that features work created by acclaimed artists Ugo Rondinone, Sue Williams, Karen Kilimnik, Mike Nelson Nan Goldin, Jim Lee, Jim Woodring...

Last night, ComingSoon.net was invited to catch a sneak peek at a startling new art exhibit in the Soho district of New York City titled "Fountains of the Deep: Visions of Noah and the Flood," curated by none other than director Darren Aronofsky. The Black Swan helmer is releasing his own vision of the Biblical hero Noah , starring Russell Crowe, but this exhibit has only a tenuous connection to the film itself, serving as more of an installation exploring our collective imagination of the story. The pieces ranged from highly abstract to illustrative, with a large number of the artists culled from the comic book world: Jim Lee, Jim Woodring, James Jean, Peter Kuper, Jock. Even '90s fan fav Rob Liefeld contributed a piece that looks more suited to the cover of the...

Darren Aronofsky is taking his visionary vibe to a literal and logical conclusion next week with an art show in New York City. "Fountains of the Deep: Visions of Noah and the Flood" will give attendees a taste of what inspired Aronofsky's vision of the Biblical epic.
The "Noah" director said, "While writing the script for 'Noah,' I wondered how my favorite artists would interpret the iconic text. So I decided to ask a few of them to return to Genesis and create an image of their own... This exhibit is the collection of their work: in painting, in drawing, in photography, in sculpture and in music." The exhibit will feature works from a wide swath of modern artists, from psychedelic illustrator Jim Woodring to legendary photographer Nan Goldin. Aronofsky has been posting sneak peeks of the art on Twitter, along with retweets of stuff like this:

Pretty much the comic book Oscars, the 2012 nominations for the Eisner awards have been announced. There is quite are large showing from Marvel in the superhero department, not so much from DC. Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.
A full list of the nominations are below, courtesy of Bleeding Cool, and the award will take place at this years San Diego Comic Con.
Best Short Story “A Brief History of the Art Form Known as Hortisculpture,” by Adrian Tomine, in Optic Nerve #12 (Drawn & Quarterly) “Harvest of Fear,” by Jim Woodring, in The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror #17 (Bongo) “The Phototaker,...

As many of you may already know, each and every year, awards distributed at San Diego Comic Con to a few select (and noteworthy) nominees who are chosen by retailers and professionals in the comic book industry. The ceremony is better known as the Eisner Awards which is now heading into its 24th year with some great talent in the running. One of the most loved titles in this year’s nominee list is Marvel’s Daredevil, picking up 6 nominations that include Best Continuing Series, Best Single Issue, Best Writer (Mark Waid), Best Cover Artist (Marcos Martin), and Best Penciller/Inker Team Marcos Martin, and Paolo Rivera/Joe Rivera). DC also scored some decent recognition with their iZombie Vertigo series, gathering 3 nominations (Cover Art, Coloring, Inker/Penciller) for the creative team.

by Jim Woodring (Fantagraphics Books)
The graphic novel has just been administered a psychotropic enema. Thankfully for the literary-constipated with ever-narrowing moral codes, balance can be restored by absorbing all that comprises Jim Woodring's creative zeitgeist. In this case, it is his first graphic novel that does just that. In this installment, Whim ("brittle-bodied biscuit-bastard") and Manhog (pig-human hybrid) dance the cosmic pas de deux in the alternate universe, The Unifactor.
For the uninitiated, Mr. Woodring has been creating parallel universes for over twenty years and is the creator of the celebrated wordless Frank comics, the first being Frank In The River released in 1992. If you've not sipped from his well, well, be prepared for the ultimate thirst quencher.

Think Hot Docs is the only festival happening in Toronto this week? The exhibition portion of the Toronto Comic Arts Festival kicked off today, and if you’re looking for a great way to spend this rainy weekend, Tcaf is the place to be.
Don’t expect to see any comics from the big two at Tcaf though. The fest is not a comic convention in the classic sense, the focus is on independent artists, creators and small publishers of comic books and graphic novels. In addition to the hundreds of guests and exhibitors showcasing their work, Tcaf also includes panels and group discussions about the independent comic scene. Guests include Paul Pope (Batman: Year 100, 100%), Jim Woodring (Frank, Jim), Evan Dorkin (Milk & Cheese), Kate Beaton (Hark! A Vagrant), Brandon Bird, the fine folks from Transmission X and many, many more.
Comic books not your thing? Not to worry, the Hand Eye Society has you covered.

Instead of crafting a full-length album to follow up his successful debut album "Life in Cartoon Motion", Mika goes forward with an Ep that contains four acoustic songs. Titled "Songs for Sorrow [Ep]", the album has revealed two of its tracks, "Lady Jane" and "Lonely Alcoholic".
Both "Jane" and "Alcoholic" are ballads that are led with piano. And true to the Ep's theme, the lyrics suggest the "misfortunes" of "stressed out single mother" in "Alcoholic" and tell the tragic story of a woman who seeks her lover down the sea by becoming fish and eventually got killed for a dish in "Lady Jane".
