NBC wasted no time getting into the “why” of its exclusive sit-down interview with the polarizing Jada Pinkett Smith for Jada’s Story: An NBC News Special With Hoda Kotb.
The broadcast began with an image of Pinkett Smith’s husband, Will Smith, hitting Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars and Pinkett Smith voicing her disbelief in that moment with, “I looked at Will and I said, ‘You hit Chris,’” with her physically appearing on the screen while speaking the words. “Like, ‘You actually hit Chris,’ and he’s like, ‘Yeah.’”
More images of the slap heard around the world played before teasing the previously shared bombshells that she and Smith have lived separate lives since 2016 and that Chris Rock asked her out. When the special finally kicks off, Kotb is with Pinkett Smith at her old high school, Baltimore School for the Arts. But it’s not long before another famous man in her life,...

There’s no instruction manual for the rap industry. A streaming marketplace flooded with music means it takes more than ever for an artist to stand out from the pack, and figuring out how to improve on your craft and navigate the business end at the same time leaves many rappers scrambling for answers. And in some cases, it leaves artists susceptible to scammers and promoters peddling false promises of easy fame.
Mickey Factz wants to change all that. He’s spent the last 15 years building his own career from the ground up.

Nearly a decade after Kanye West’s viral interview where he berated radio host Sway over how to run his business ventures, Ye has finally admitted — amid his battles with Gap and Adidas — that Sway was right.
In 2013, West came on Sway’s radio show and publicly lobbied for support from Fortune 500 companies — “Walt Disney! Nike! Google!” — to “stand up and let me create more,” as West was the self-proclaimed “Number One most impactful artist of our generation.” Sway, in turn, recommended that West “empower yourself and do it yourself,...

Just weeks ahead of the 2022 elections, Kanye “Ye” West has said he isn’t done with politics.
The rapper, who mounted a failed presidential bid in 2020, was asked in an ABC News interview if he had “future political aspirations” and answered, “Yes, absolutely.”
In the portion of the interview that aired on Thursday’s Good Morning America, Ye declined to specify which offices he might be interested in running for, but a day after Election Day in 2020, when he appeared to concede with an Instagram post, he wrote “Kanye 2024.”
He also teased political aspirations this year, in the song “Keep It Burnin” with Future, where he raps, “When you run for ’24, I bet your spouse gon’ be with you / Who put this together? Me, that’s who.”

Earlier this year, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready completed the music for a new documentary, The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash, which premiered this week at South by Southwest. The movie, directed by Thom Zimny (Elvis Presley: The Searcher), uses archival footage and interviews with Cash’s family and friends and attempts to add color to the story of the Man in Black. Mike McCready’s mother taught art for nearly three decades, and she instilled in him a great love of painting and sculpture. But even though he liked art, the omnipresence of works by Monet, Van Gogh and Warhol intimidated him when it came to making his own visual art. McCready would stick to playing guitar, something he’s done for nearly 30 years in Pearl Jam. “I held artists on such an iconic level that I never felt I could even try,” he says. “I never had the confidence.”

There’s a new trend in rap: An embattled artist releases an album, faces considerable scorn and decides to host their own interview or radio show to explain away the controversy. It’s supposed to be eye-opening and candid, but usually comes off as simple PR maneuvering. Earlier this year, Kanye West sat down with Charlamagne Tha God to discuss his support of President Trump and journey dealing with mental illness. Nicki Minaj’s Queen Radio is an entire platform devoted to the Pinkprint rapper denouncing her critics, rivals, and enemies.

Eli Roth’s Death Wish remake is a “What were they thinking?” shoot-em-up baffler from start to finish. Irresponsibly tone deaf, maverick in its thematic ignorance and pornographic in its fetishistic gun obsession. There’s never a point where vi-o-lent vigilante justice might *not* be the answer, always gruesomely inflicted with Rothian levels of fatal body trauma. For a movie that opens with media chatter about how Chicago’s criminal epidemic has reached near-dystopian levels, there’s a shocking lack of responsible messaging under peeled layers of flesh. No matter how much you might want to separate your politics from movies, Death Wish refuses to let you. It’s a dumbfounding example of the exact kind of weapons normalization we *do-f#&king-not* need in mainstream pop culture right now.

2018 is turning out to be a truly inclusive year for on-screen representation. “Black Panther” invited African-American audiences to see themselves in a massive superhero movie that wasn’t about their own oppression, “A Fantastic Woman” gave transgender women the chance to see themselves in an acclaimed film that wasn’t terribly retrograde, and now Eli Roth’s dangerously enjoyable “Death Wish” gives right-wing lunatics the opportunity to see themselves in a fascist fairy tale that wasn’t directed by Dinesh D’Souza. To each their own cinema.
Set in an alternate-reality Chicago where the police are so overwhelmed by inner-city crime that they can’t spare the resources required to solve the murder of an affluent white woman, this contemporary riff on Charles Bronson’s vigilante classic is a pulpy reaffirmation of the idea that a good guy with a gun is the only thing capable of stopping a bad guy with a gun.

In case you didn’t know Shia Labeouf can rap. No, it’s true. The “American Honey” actor surprised people at SiriusXM Shade 45’s “Sway in the Morning” when he freestyle rapped during the show’s “Five Fingers of Death” segment.
The challenge determines an individual’s freestyling abilities over five different beats and surprisingly, Labeouf impressed everyone with his performance.
In the video below, the actor is heard rapping about his Missy Elliott tattoos and Dr. Dre. He also calls himself the Einstein of rhyming and the “Jewish Pac to this music with a twist of Whitman.” At the end of his rap, host Sway Calloway gets pumped up and yells, “Did you see that? This is what we’ve been talking about.”

Naomi Campbell is firmly on Ashley Graham's side. The supermodel was asked Thursday about Cheryl Tiegs' comments (which she later recounted) that Ashley Graham is "unhealthly," and Campbell immediately disagreed. "How does [Tiegs] know that? I would never make a comment like that, I think its way too personal," Campbell tells radio host Sway Calloway during his show Thursday. "I don't know what Ashley eats, and it doesn't necessarily mean that because you're bigger you're eating tons of food," Campbell says. As far as Larry Wilmore is concerned, scandal-plagued comedian Bill Cosby is “through.” “The Nightly Show” host appeared on SiriusXM radio show “Sway’s Universe” on Monday to discuss, among other topics, Cosby’s troubles and Donald Trump’s mind-boggling popularity. Asked by host Sway Calloway what would happen if Cosby — who’s been accused of rape or sexual assault by dozens of women in recent months — decided to jump into politics, Wilmore scoffed, “He can’t even run for dog catcher at this point. Cosby’s through.” Wilmore went on to express his amazement at the salacious accusations against the comedian.

The singer is still dealing with fallout from assaulting Rihanna in 2009.
More than five years after the fact, Chris Brown is still facing fallout from his 2009 assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna. So it stands to reason that he'd have words for Ray Rice in the wake of his NFL suspension.
Rice was officially cut from the Baltimore Ravens this week after a video leaked in which he could be seen assaulting his then-fiancee, now wife Janay Rice. A lot of people have had a lot of opinions on the matter (including Janay herself), and now Brown is chiming in.
"I think it's all about the choices you make," Brown told MTV News' Sway Calloway when asked what he had learned from his own experience. "With me, I deal with a lot of anger issues from my past – not knowing how to express myself verbally and at the same time not knowing how to cope with my emotions...
