Showing as part of this year’s Fantasia Midnights program, Synapse Films premiered their restoration of writer/director Jeff Lieberman’s cult favorite Blue Sunshine. The 1977 film about former hippies suffering from homicidal acid flashbacks will be getting a 4K release at an undisclosed future date, and the image quality is noticeably better than on my DVD. But, what about the actual film? Glad you asked…
Blue Sunshine begins at a party where one of the guests is doing an impersonation of Rodan. “The artist?” asks one of the guests. “No, the monster” But a real monster is about to show up as Frannie loses his wig and his mind and begins shoving guests into the fireplace.

A story of murders in the ER becomes, courtesy of writer Paddy Chayefsky, either a preview of social breakdown or an impassioned examination of why we invest our lives and souls in imperfect institutions. George C. Scott is the doctor coming apart at the seams, who meets his match in a New Age hippie from a New Mexico commune. My instinct is that such a person would not look like Diana Rigg, but everybody needs a dream girl.

Weird is a very comfortable word in Jeff Lieberman’s lexicon. From the night crawler nastiness of Squirm (1976) to his mountaintop massacre Just Before Dawn (1981), his films are always a little left of the norm and all the better for it. And in between those two, he decided to take a run at a paranoia thriller nursing a major ‘60s hangover, pulsating with psychotic, Kojakian ex hippies. Welcome to Blue Sunshine (1978), a film more potent than the brown acid your great uncle said he took at Woodstock. (Although he probably wasn’t even there.)
Released Stateside in May (after a stop across the pond at the BFI the previous November) by Cinema Shares International (the fine folks behind Soul Brothers of Kung Fu), Blue Sunshine’s limited run and puzzled looks from critics saw it quickly fade away into cultdom, where it resided for decades with Lieberman’s other films...

All The President’S Men will screen at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium Friday May 15th at 7:30pm.
Lengthy and full of details but nevertheless one of the most acclaimed films of the ‘70s, All The President’S Men (1976) still manages to work almost 40 years after its release.
As we all know, this film revolves around the efforts of Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) and Bob Woodward Robert (Redford) of the Washington Post to get at the truth behind that little “third-rate burglary” that happened at the Watergate building in the early morning hours of June 17, 1972. Bit by little bit, a disturbing puzzle forms. With some assistance from...

Young Robert Redford and politics: 'The Candidate' and 'All the President's Men' (photo: Robert Redford as Bob Woodward in 'All the President's Men') A young Robert Redford can be seen The Candidate, All the President's Men, Three Days of the Condor, and Downhill Racer as Turner Classic Movies' Redford series comes to a close this evening. The world of politics is the focus of the first three films, each one of them well-regarded box-office hits. The last title, which shows that politics is part of life no matter what, is set in the world of competitive sports. 'The Candidate' In the Michael Ritichie-directed The Candidate (1972), Robert Redford plays idealistic liberal Democrat Bob McKay, who, with no chance of winning, is convinced to run against the Republican incumbent in a fight for a California seat in Congress. See, McKay is too handsome. Too young. Too liberal.

Ben Bradlee movies: From 'All the President's Men' to 'Born Yesterday' (photo: Jason Robards as 'The Washington Post' executive editor Ben Bradlee in 'All the President's Men') Former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee aka Benjamin C. Pakula's film version of All the President's Men, died of "natural causes" last October 21, 2014, at his home in Washington, D.C. Bradlee, who had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease, was 93. The Washington Post of the 21st century may look increasingly like a more pedantic version of the Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid New York Post, but things weren't always like that. John Michael Higgins on Happily Divorced (with Nathan Anderson)
Whether it’s his film work on those hilarious Christopher Guest productions like Best In Show, television work as David Letterman in the bio-pic The Late Show or The Good Wife or originating the title role in the off-Broadway production of Paul Rudnick’s Jeffrey, John Michael Higgins is one of those actors you’ve seen in just about every medium imaginable and, more times than not, he’s playing a gay character.
In the TV Land sitcom, Happily Divorced, Higgins again plays gay, this time as character Peter Lovett, who figures out he’s gay while married to his wife, Fran, played by Fran Drescher. The setup? The couple divorce only to remain in each other’s lives. Mirroring Drescher’s real-life experience with her ex, Peter Marc Jacobson, the closeness between the two is the heart of the series.

TV Land is kicking off another original series, and Happily Divorced fits in the same mold as its other successes. That is to say, it's a fairly screwy comedy that you'd expect to see coming out in the 80's. Fran Drescher is an L.A. florist who finds herself dating again after 18 years of marriage. Nothing that doesn't happen everyday, except that Fran isn't married anymore because her husband suddenly came out of the closet at her, and he still lives in the house.
The pilot solidifies itself pretty quickly, and establishes the idea that, at least for quite some time, the show will revolve around the curious husband/wife/new boyfriend triangle, with support coming from - Fran's parents Dori and Glen (Rita Moreno and Robert Walden), Fran's best friend Judi (Tichina Arnold), and her flower delivery employee (Valente Rodriguez).
By the way, Fran's husband Peter is played by John Michael Higgins,...

Casting (and potential casting) dominates the latest round of pilot-season news.
Maria Bello is seemingly always on the "actors in demand" list during pilot season, and this year is no different -- or maybe it is. Bello ("A History of Violence," "The Company Men") says NBC has approached her about starring in its "Prime Suspect" remake. "There may be interest in me doing it, but I haven't read anything yet or talked to anyone in-depth about it," she says. "I'm possibly interested. Definitely nervous to even think about taking over for Helen Mirren. C'mon! How could anyone compete with her?" [EW]
Debra Messing is headed back to NBC to star in the drama pilot "Smash," about the cast and crew of a Broadway musical. The "Will & Grace" Emmy winner will play the show's lyricist. The pilot is based on an idea by Steven Spielberg, who's executive producing; Theresa Rebeck ("Law & Order: Criminal Intent") is writing it.

In the pantheon of strange films, Blue Sunshine (1976) certainly holds a spot, and a high-ranking spot amidst the films of the 70’s. Written and directed by Jeff Lieberman (Squirm), this is a movie that appeals on more than one level. To some, the film will be a memorable b-movie experience, but it’s a drug-induced out-of-your-mind crazy experience as well. The film also appeals to those horror fans that enjoyed the early works of David Cronenberg, as it maintains a similar feel as movies like Rabid and Brood.
I saw this movie some years ago, but recently picked it up on DVD off that Internet thing. Sure, I could have purchased the Blue Sunshine DVD on it’s own, but part of the fun for me seeing it the first time was that I discovered it while watching Elvira’S Movie MacAbre on TV. Yeah, you got me… the original...

In March 1977, the very successful Mary Tyler Moore Show sitcom said farewell after seven seasons. The cast and crew wanted to leave while they were still on top. In the final episode, Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore), Murray Slaughter (Gavin MacLeod), and Lou Grant (Ed Asner) were fired from their Wjm newsroom positions while inept anchorman Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) kept his job.
In the fall, Lou Grant moved to his own spin-off show and took a job as the city editor for the fictional Los Angeles Tribune. Some tuned in expecting to find another comedy. Instead, they found that Lou Grant was a drama series that didn't shy away from provocative subjects like nuclear waste, mental illness, prostitution, and gay rights.
In addition to the gruff title character, the series follows the work of general-assignment reporters Joe Rossi (Robert Walden) and Billie Newman (Linda Kelsey), photographer Dennis "Animal" Price...

The Fluffer
Just for the record, in adult entertainment industry parlance a fluffer is somebody who helps a male porn star find, uh, motivation for a scene.
Enter "The Fluffer", essentially a gay "Boogie Nights" by way of "Midnight Cowboy" and "Letter From an Unknown Woman" that initially packs some potent wit before going all soft and melodramatic.
The rather abrupt, clunky tonal shift is doubly disappointing, because the film, directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash West, with a script by West, boasts a bright cast of familiar and fresh faces in addition to all that crisp, dry satire.
Despite not being all that it could be, the provocative title and setting (though most of the risque business is conducted discreetly just out of frame) should ensure that the picture generates some sturdy niche business.
New to Los Angeles and looking for work, boyish, naive Sean (Michael Cunio) spends lonely nights renting classic Hollywood movies and gets more than he bargains for when what was thought to be "Citizen Kane" turns out to be a gay porn version starring hypermasculine Johnny Rebel (Scott Gurney).
Immediately smitten with the bad boy icon, Sean applies for work as a cameraman at the Men of Janus Production Company, where Johnny does his thing, and quickly finds himself doing double duty as his idol's fluffer of choice.
While Sean was hoping for something a little more meaningful, it turns out that Johnny, aka Mikey, is only "gay for pay" and prefers spending his off-work hours with his stripper girlfriend Babylon, aka Julie (Roxanne Day), when not bingeing with other females.
But Sean quietly holds out hope at the expense of his personal relationships, and when Johnny's life hits a downward spiral, he helps him hide out in Mexico -- and this is where "Fluffer" fluffs it.
Obviously West, a successful adult filmmaker, and Glatzer (whose series credits include "Divorce Court" and MTV's "Road Rules") have a lot of worthy things they want to say about sexuality and emotional contact, but they don't know how to integrate them into the film without disrupting the buoyant flow and pace.
Instead, they've more or less split the production right down the middle, and it's the spirited first half, with its sharply observed industry asides, that works best, especially for the game cast that also includes Robert Walden, Taylor Negron, Richard Riehle, Deborah Harry and Adina Porter.
Like one of its inspirations, the production could have used more Boogie and fewer murky Nights.
