It took more than eighteen years for writer/director Nick Cassavetes to manage to get an adaptation of the Boston Teran novel God Is a Bullet (pick up a copy Here) into production, but he stuck with the project, and his film received a wide theatrical release last month. A week ago, it was given a digital release as well – but now it has come to our attention that there are two different cuts of the movie out there. If you seek out the digital version in the United States, you’ll find that the cut available is the full 156 minute cut. But if you go to rent or purchase the digital release in Canada, you’ll find that the movie has been trimmed down to 120 minutes.
We don’t know exactly why the Canadian digital release is 36 minutes shorter than the U.S. digital release. On the Blu-ray.com forums,...

The strange tale of Robert Durst will be the latest true-crime story to be ripped from the headlines and run through the Law & Order wringer: As this trailer reveals, the upcoming season premiere of Law & Order: Svu will focus on the case of a wealthy, seemingly untouchable serial killer (Dallas Roberts's Dr. Greg Yates) whose case mirrors Durst's, down to the trash bags full of body parts and the inadvertent confession seemingly caught on tape. Svu's portrayal will complete the Law & Order–Robert Durst trifecta: A 2002 episode of Criminal Intent saw David Thornton play a rich cross-dresser who murdered his mob-daughter friend, while a 2004 episode of the Law & Order mothership featured Henry Stram as an "eccentric cross-dressing millionaire" who killed his neighbor and, decades earlier, his wife. To commemorate the occasion, Durst will receive a gold-plated statue of Jerry Orbach.

If you still think of Cyndi Lauper as the rainbow-haired, helium-voiced pop music confection who defined '80s girl power with such tunes as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "She Bop" -- well, you're still partially right. Her hair remains a canvas for her mood, and the voice is unmistakably Lauper.
But in the decades since she burst into the pop culture lexicon with 1983's platinum-selling "She's So Unusual," Lauper has evolved into an actress, author, Broadway composer and tireless philanthropist -- all the while continuing to make music and a quirky home life with her actor husband David Thornton and their precocious teen son, Declyn. Gary Oldman as Jackie Flannery in State Of Grace (Phil Joanou, 1990, USA):
Long considered one of the most talented actors in cinema, it’s very strange that his outstanding acting as the younger brother of Ed Harris’ local crime boss in this underrated film doesn’t get talked about nearly enough when discussing Oldman’s body of work. This is a must-see performance for all Oldman fans. For the record, State Of Grace is a far better Irish mob film than The Departed (Martin Scorsese, 2006, USA), primarily because it contains much better acting across the board. Oldman was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Tomas Alfredson, 2011, UK/France).
Other notable Gary Oldman performances: Prick Up Your Ears (Stephen Frears, 1987, USA), Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola, 1992, USA), True Romance (Tony Scott, 1993, USA), Leon: The Professional (Luc Besson, 1994, France), Air Force One (Wolfgang Petersen, 1997, USA), The Contender (Rod Lurie,...

Let's get one thing straight: John Turturro is a treasure of an actor. (I don't think that needs clarifying, but still.) While he has a broad and impressive resume both in front of and behind the camera (I don't care what people say; I kinda love Romance and Cigarettes) it is his work with Joel and Ethan Coen that will likely be his most well-known down the trail into the future. Speaking to the Av Club in yet another one of the site's wonderful Random Roles interviews, Mr. Turturro talked about making his own films and working with Spike Lee and the Coens, among other things. In doing so he reiterated the idea of a spin-off [1] from The Big Lebowski and a sequel to Barton Fink. Both are ideas that have been mentioned over the years, and neither is really likely to be made. But they're still fun to think about.

Mirjana Karanovic, David Thornton, Here and There Featuring David Thornton, European Film Award nominee Mirjana Karanovic (for Grbavica in 2006), Cyndi Lauper, Branislav Trifunovic, and Antone Pagan, Darko Lungulov’s Here and There was Serbia’s initial submission for the 2009 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. (The film was disqualified because it contained too much English-language dialogue.) Here and There follows a jaded middle-aged New Yorker who goes to Serbia to make some quick cash by marrying someone in need of U.S. immigration papers. His plan goes awry when the promised cash never arrives. Writer’s block gets all the ink, but in writer-director Darko Lungulov’s feature debut, Robert (David Thornton) has musician’s block. Once a jazz saxophonist, he can no longer pick up his horn or even open the case. Broke and depressed, he is evicted from his dumpy apartment and swiftly overstays his welcome at a friend’s place by drinking all of her booze.
Unshaven and unkempt, Robert even looks like he reeks of smoke from the cigarettes constantly dangling from his lower lip. Thick, wild hair stands on end like that of a troll doll, and Thornton’s hunched shoulders and narrowed eyes convey chronic cynicism.
With no place else to go, Robert accepts an unusual offer from Branko (Branislav Trifunovic), the Serbian immigrant who helps him move. Robert flies to Serbia to marry Branko’s girlfriend Ivana (Jelena Mrdja) so that she can join her beau in the States.

When we talk about green card marriages in this country, we're usually thinking about some kind of impoverished Mexican or Eastern European immigrant, desperate to get to this country and marry an American to live off the fat of our land. But what about the other way around? What if a New Yorker-- a sarcastic, dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker-- went to Serbia to marry another man's girlfriend and bring her back to the States? That's the premise of Here and There, Darko Lungulov's film that stars David Thornton as Robert, a New York man who is convinced by his new business partner to travel to Serbia and marry the man's girlfriend. Once he arrives in Belgrade, though, Robert finds himself falling in love with his friend's mother, Olga, a divorcee whose company helps him feel like he's coming back to live. I spoke to Darko and David last week, just...
