These legendary Dracula movies prove the vampire legend never gets old.
I saw Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” over the weekend. Now, as you may know, this isn’t usually my kind of movie. I’m not a hardcore horror fan and I was a little nervous about seeing the film after watching the trailer. But I read Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” about ten years ago and remember loving it. And I had heard good things about this remake, so I rolled the dice and saw the movie. My honest opinion? It’s freaking awesome. The cinematography is brilliant, the character work is impressive, and Bill Skarsgård does an incredible job as Count Orlok (renamed from Count Dracula) – specifically his voice work. I have never heard anything quite like it. So, high off that intense but highly satisfying film, here are my top 7 favorite Dracula movies you can stream right now.

Nosferatu (2024), directed by Robert Eggers, reimagines the legendary 1922 silent film classic. It brings a fresh yet eerie perspective to the iconic vampire myth. The cinematography, by Dop Jarin Blaschke, echoes the ominous lighting and stark shadows of the original. It adds a unique modern twist. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) made its way out into theatres last month and has stirred up a lot of positive reactions, with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray even describing the film as a new horror classic in his 10/10 review. Not much was changed in writer-director Robert Eggers’ 2024 remake of Nosferatu, which was adapted from the 1922 silent vampire film, based on Dracula by Bram Stoker. But yes, the one thing that was beyond recognition was Bill Skarsgård’s appearance as the vampire, Count Orlok.

Robert Eggers’ long-awaited Nosferatu is not merely a remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic, nor is it a straightforward adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It is, instead, a gothic symphony of horror that pays homage to its predecessors while carving its own distinctive path into the annals of vampire lore. With meticulous attention to detail, a palpable sense of dread, and a career-defining performance by Lily-Rose Depp, Eggers delivers a film that is both hauntingly beautiful and deeply unsettling.
Set in early 19th-century Germany, the film follows Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult), an earnest young estate agent tasked with traveling to Transylvania to meet the enigmatic Count Orlok (Skarsgård). Despite warnings from his wife Ellen (Depp), who has been psychically haunted by Orlok since childhood, Thomas ventures into the count’s foreboding domain. It’s a setup familiar to fans of the genre, yet Eggers imbues it with his trademark precision.

“Nosferatu,” a gothic horror remake inspired by Bram Stoker’s “Dracula,” sunk its teeth into $100 million at the global box office.
What’s impressive is the film, from Focus Features and director Robert Eggers, surpassed the milestone after 10 days of release. Very few arthouse movies have crossed that benchmark at all in post-pandemic times.
“Nosferatu,” starring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, along with Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult, brought in $26.8 million over the weekend from 6,317 screens in 61 markets at the international box office. The R-rated movie has collected an additional $69.4 million domestically since Christmas Day for a grand total of $100.3 million to date. It cost $50 million, a hefty price tag for an indie, but appears to have the staying power needed to get out into the black.
Also swimming toward a box office achievement is Disney’s “Moana 2,” with $960.5 million in the bank and $1 billion on the horizon. The animated sequel,...

Throughout his life span, Jimmy Carter has lived through many important events in history. But on top of being a former president and a Nobel-winning humanitarian, the actor was also apparently a film buff, which wouldn’t be the first for a U.S. President. Having apparently screened over 400 movies in the White House during his term in office, it’s safe to conclude that Carter was fond of the medium.

This further makes the fact that he died while Lily-Rose Depp’s Nosferatu was screening in theatres all the way more poetic, especially considering that he was there for all of the movie adaptations.

Robert Eggers has had an indelible influence on the film industry due to his unique and dreadful imaginative quality. Eggers’ movies do not simply transport the viewers to a land of lores, monsters, and mythology but haunt them with terrifying yet provocative creatures of imagination.

In the years since his Sundance debut with Anya Taylor-Joy’s The Witch in 2015, there has been little to stall Eggers’ rise as one of the greatest historical and psychological horror writer-directors of all time. With films like The Northman and The Lighthouse, he solidified his position in the industry, ultimately bringing the classic gothic tale Nosferatu to life.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind awards season’s most talked-about movies continues with Nosferatu, Focus Features’ gothic horror from writer-director Robert Eggers. Tarsem Singh’s The Cell came at the end of a trend of 1990s noir films that merged the conventions of the genre with the aesthetics of music videos. Tarsem himself cut his teeth making music videos, most famously for R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion,” and his first feature at times feels like an assembly of images that strives primarily for visceral impact, throwing cohesiveness to the wind.

Before the word nosferatu appears in a blackletter elongated to the point of imbalance, that first 'n' deliberately rendered here in lower case because it seems intent on the improper, there is darkness. Initially punctuated by other seeming handwriting, versions of production company logos that could have been scratched on negatives but were likely placed by mice. Then another darkness, an evening, of black and white. A recurring element, lunar glow upon the silver screen.
Recurring an inevitable consequence, perhaps, of something that is perhaps not a remake. Treading in the complicated ground of Murnau's initial offering, that work owes debts eventually given legal weight to Bram Stoker's Dracula. Count Orlok is not he, nor the Hutters the Harkers, nor Von Franz Van Helsing nor Wisberg Whitby, but it's close. Closer still here, with explicit credit for ideas reintroduced or reincorporated or repossessed from Dracula into this Nosferatu. At one point.

Set in 1838 Germany, the story centers on Ellen (Lily Rose-Depp), a sensitive girl that in her youth prayed for a guardian spirit, which unfortunately became the vampire Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgard) of Transylvania. Years later, Ellen is married to Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), who ends up facilitating a legal transaction with the Count that opens up a portal of dread to both Ellen’s connection and society at large. The town’s noblemen turn to Von Franz (Willem Dafoe), an occult scientist who may be the key to learning the truth, in combination with the passion of Thomas toward his wife.

Orlok is an ancient vampire who comes to the town of Wisborg to spread fear and drain the life from his victims. He is inspired by Count Dracula from the novel Dracula, but with a scarier and more monstrous appearance.
In the original 1922 ‘Nosferatu,’ Count Orlok had a creepy look with a bald, pale head, sharp teeth, long claw-like fingers, and a skeletal face that made him seem otherworldly.
In Robert Eggers’ new ‘Nosferatu,’ the character has a fresh and unique design. When Thomas Hutter (played by Nicholas Hoult) discovers Orlok in his sarcophagus, the vampire is revealed with a bushy mustache, a skeletal face, decaying skin, and even a striking full-frontal nude scene.
Bill Skarsgård is unrecognizable as Orlok which only speaks for the skills and dedication of the makeup and prosthetics department. The vampire appears as a putrid half-decayed corpse and it’s completely and utterly revolting. Eggers...

It was an unconventional strategy. Focus Features made the bold choice to release Robert Eggers’ period horror movie Nosferatu on Christmas Day, offering up a fresh take on a gothic horror classic as a bit of counterprogramming against traditional holiday fare. And it was a gamble that paid off, with Nosferatu sinking its fangs into an impressive opening weekend.
Here in the United States, Nosferatu scared up $40.3 million in its 5-day holiday weekend debut, which Variety notes is “the biggest Christmas Day launch and weekend haul for a genre film, overtaking the benchmark set in 1998 by Robert Rodriguez’s high school sci-fi story The Faculty with $4.4 million on opening day and $11.6 million over the traditional weekend.”
“Heading into the extended Yuletide frame, Nosferatu was projected to open to $25 million from 2,992 North American theaters,” Variety further details. “Focus Features reported that 40% of opening weekend crowds purchased their tickets the day before they saw the movie.

F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent horror film "Nosferatu" is a "Dracula" adaptation, but it uses none of the character names from Bram Stoker's original novel. In "Nosferatu," actor Max Shreck's central vampire villain is named Orlok, not Dracula. The changes from "Dracula" to "Nosferatu" are commonly attributed to how the film played it loose with copyright laws. (Stoker's widow Florence Balcombe did not give permission to the filmmakers of "Nosferatu" to adapt from her husband's estate and was furious when she learned of the film.)
This has left "Nosferatu" something of a tangled legacy as a "Dracula" adaptation. It can be remade in its own right rather than later "Nosferatu" films being just more "Dracula" flicks.
When Werner Herzog remade "Nosferatu" in 1979, he split the difference. He titled his film as "Nosferatu the Vampyre," but his characters had Stoker's names: Klaus Kinski was Count Dracula, Bruno Ganz was Jonathan Harker,...

Before Bela Lugosi created the image of an elegant Dracula in Todd Browning’s film Dracula, F.W. Murnau made the brilliant silent film Nosferatu, the first film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s eerie novel. Stoker’s estate refused to let the legendary German director use the book’s title but Murnau made the film anyway, renaming the vampire Count Orlok and re-setting the latter part of the story in Germany rather than England. Director Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is an outstanding film that both honors and recreates Murnau’s great classic, while also adding a modern horror edge as well.

Nosferatu Box Office (North America): Headed For A Spectacular Debut ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Nosferatu might align with the Halloween energy, but it is rocking the cinemas post-Christmas by scoring an all-time record number for an R-rated film in the United States. It has experienced a minor drop from Thursday, which was Boxing Day. It hit the screens clashing with Timothee Chalamet’s Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, and is leading at the domestic box office chart. Scroll below for the deets.
The film was in the news for a long time and mainly so because of its excellent cast led by the handsome and talented Bill Skarsgard in the titular role. Robert Eggers’ lushly gothic remake of “Nosferatu” is a loving homage to silent films, with its dramatic black-and-white scenes and overpowering sense of creeping dread.
The eerie images of Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) hand sweeping over the entire city of London and — in one of the film’s most striking shots — the face of his obsession, Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), is a nod to F. W. Murnau’s original 1922 film, in which Count Orlok’s shadow falls across his victims before the monster himself enters the frame.
If you’re ready to do a deeper dive into the classics that influenced Eggers, start with these seven films.

Orlok is a centuries-old vampire who travels to the town of Wisborg to spread fear and drain the life of his victims. He is based on the character of Count Dracula from the novel ‘Dracula,’ but with a more monstrous and eerie look.
In the original ‘Nosferatu’ (1922), Count Orlok is a creepy vampire with a very pale, bald head, sharp teeth, and long, claw-like fingers. His face is gaunt and skeletal, giving him a haunting, otherworldly appearance.
The latest take on the character, Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’ presented a different look for the iconic character. In the new ‘Nosferatu’ film Director Robert Eggers wanted to give the character a fresh, unique look. When Thomas Hutter (played by Nicholas Hoult) finds Orlok in his sarcophagus, the vampire is revealed with a bushy mustache, a skeletal face, and decaying skin all over his body, including a full frontal nude scene.

Nosferatu's take on Count Orlok is a far cry from the vampire's classic big screen appearance. However, a drastic reinvention was expected with filmmaker Robert Eggers eager to put a new spin on the classic horror story.
When Nicholas Hoult's Thomas Hutter discovers the Count resting in his sarcophagus, Orlok is fully revealed; Bill Skarsgård dons a bushy mustache, has a skeletal face, and patches of decaying skin all over his body.
Skarsgård, who transformed into Pennywise the Clown in the It movies, embraced the prosthetics and makeup needed to bring Count Orlok to life on screen in the remake but admits they were a challenge at first.
"I was worried that I couldn't perform through it, that it would feel like giant prosthetic pieces, and I couldn't come alive through that," Skarsgård told Entertainment Weekly. "There was definitely a stage when they hadn't put everything on, where I was like,...

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Nosferatu (2024).
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is arguably the most important and well-known horror text in modern history. Originally published in 1897, this epistolary novel follows a young solicitor and his wife as they’re attacked by an ancient vampire attempting to move from his isolated castle to the bustling UK. Stoker’s gothic story was itself adapted from centuries of folklore describing a night-dwelling beast who seduces then sucks the blood of innocent victims. Twenty-five years after publication, F.W. Murnau brought Stoker’s novel to the screen in the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. Set in 1838, this loose and unauthorized retelling chronicles a similar vampiric plague in the fictional town of Wisborg, Germany. More than a century later, Robert Eggers tackles these two classic texts while adding his particular brand of feminist mysticism. Rather than a helpless victim corrupted by darkness, his...

Mel Brooks inspired a generation of filmmakers and their hits, but one you might not have anticipated was Robert Eggers. That’s right, the man behind The Witch and The Lighthouse was directly influenced by one terrible Brooks comedy.
We know that Robert Eggers does a lot of research for his films, and certainly Nosferatu was no different. And since it had been brewing in his head and was even planned to be his second film, he had a lot of time to do so on Nosferatu. But oddly enough, one of the movies he included in his rotation of Nosferatu exploration was Mel Brooks’ 1995 spoof Dracula: Dead and Loving It, widely considered one of the comedy genius’ worst. “There are a lot of scenes that were deliberately rewritten after watching the Mel Brooks movie, and considering, ‘Wow, that totally doesn’t make sense.’” But we really know he’s...

You’ve likely heard the hype. This Christmas, Robert Eggers brings us his fourth feature film, as he offers the legend of Nosferatu to the big screen. Eggers remake or reboot, whatever you’d like to call it, is an exceptional film. The performances from Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe are terrific. Yet it is both Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard that bring a bloody heart and soul to this darkly beautiful and haunting feature. It’s rare to see such care taken to create a villain with tons more depth than your generic movie monster. Eggers examines this by incorporating elements of both the original Nosferatu and the legacy of Dracula.
Recently, we sat down to interview Mr. Eggers about his latest feature. The filmmaker discussed the influences that went into this dark new nightmare. He talked about merging the elements of Dracula, among others,...

The director of the latest movie in the bloodsucker tradition explains why he went back to the Transylvanian source for his version of one of cinema’s enduring adaptations
We are all drawn to archetypal stories. Fairytales, folktales, fables, myths: we tell them over and over again because they always have meaning in our lives. We can always see reflections of ourselves in Hansel and Gretel, Oedipus and King Lear. They can mean different things at different stages of our lives and be interpreted in different ways by individuals sitting in the same audience.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is among them. It one of the most influential novels of the turn of the last century and, along with the stories of Sherlock Holmes and Jesus Christ, among the most adapted works in cinema history.

If Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” is your first introduction to the lesser-known vampire tale, you may be surprised how similar it is to Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.”
This vamp (played by Bill Skarsgård) also lives in a castle in remote Eastern Europe and travels to London by boat, with nearly all the same story beats as in the 1897 novel. But F. W. Murnau’s silent movie changed a few details, including character names, to avoid copyright infringement: Count Dracula is now named Count Orlok, Jonathan Harker becomes Thomas Hutter, etc.
Despite these slight alterations, Stoker’s heirs easily spotted the striking resemblance and sued. A court found in favor of the Stoker estate and ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed.

In 1922, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror premiered. This silent movie was later colorized with music added. Here it is 102 years later, and we have a 2024 reinterpretation in theaters now. The new Nosferatu, directed by Robert Eggers, is based on the screenplay for the 1922 film, which itself was a thinly veiled adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula with the names changed.

To say that “Nosferatu” constitutes Eggers’s worst film is, also, not quite a derogatory statement, but rather a testament to the towering artistic vision that the historically inclined auteur-in-the-making has stamped onto the scene over the course of his still-brief career.
With all that being said… Yes, Eggers’s “Nosferatu” is both the worst of the mainline “Nosferatu” features and the worst of the director’s own, but not for a lack of either style or reverence. Indeed, “Nosferatu” demonstrates, above all else, a continued honing of Eggers’s skills as a craftsman, marrying his penchant for historical accuracy with occult-like imagery applied to one...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains mild spoilers about “Nosferatu,” now playing in theaters.
Robert Eggers’ fourth film — “Nosferatu,” in theaters today via Focus Features — is a bold, starry reimagining of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 masterful silent film of the same name. Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård star as the gorgeous Ellen Hutter and grotesque vampire Count Orlok, respectively, alongside Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin and Eggers regulars Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson. The gorgeous and sinister tale builds on the dark historical lore of Eggers’ previous films — 2015’s “The Witch,” 2019’s “The Lighthouse” and 2022’s “The Northman” — and infuses it with drama, desire and an electric erotic undercurrent. Eggers, as funny and self-deprecating in conversation as his films are dark, spoke with Variety about creating a new vision of a film that has influenced him since childhood, his unique partnership with director Chris Columbus and the viral “Nosferatu” merch.

This article contains mild spoilers for "Nosferatu."
There is much within Robert Eggers' film "Nosferatu" that is to be expected. If you're familiar with the prior cinematic incarnations of Dracula, vampire movies in general, Eggers' filmography, or some combination of all three, then you're not necessarily going to be surprised by everything in the film. There's a lot of bloodletting, a palpable sense of dread, an authenticity of time and place, and a psychosexual relationship between the vampire Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) and his victims — all aspects that foreknowledge of vampire movies and Eggers' work should prepare you for.
However, part of the joy that comes with following the work of a true auteur is seeing how much they can still surprise you, even as they remain true to their quirks and proclivities. "Nosferatu" is as undeniably Eggers' film as it is a quintessential vampire movie, and yet it's honestly...

The story of the infamous vampire Count Dracula has spanned over a century and has served as the source for countless adaptations on stage, screen, and television. This year, though, there's no more notable adaptation than the upcoming remake of "Nosferatu" (read our glowing review here). The original film, from 1922 and director F.W. Murnau, is one of the seminal pieces of horror filmmaking, establishing a more disturbing and terrifying template for vampires than future iterations of the more recognizably seductive version of Dracula played by everyone from Bela Lugosi to Gary Oldman. The new film, from celebrated indie filmmaker Robert Eggers, is meant to give us a distinctive and unique depiction of the creepy Eastern European Count whose hermetic lifestyle masks the fact that he thrives on human blood.
Though the trailers for the remake have (accurately) promised an atmospheric, spooky, and altogether unnervingly nightmarish account of this classic horror story,...

Plot: A young woman is haunted by a terrifying vampire who’s become infatuated with her and will go to any lengths to be with her.
Review: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Robert Eggers is one of the most exciting directors working nowadays. Having made a huge impression with The Witch and The Lighthouse, Eggers’s The Northman was his biggest, most ambitious movie to date. It perfectly married his aesthetic to a larger canvas that delivered for a broad audience but never felt compromised. The fact that The Northman wasn’t seen more widely on the big screen is a tragedy, but with Nosferatu, Eggers seems on the cusp of a major hit that should open him up to an even bigger audience.
One thing’s for sure – there’s not going to be anything else like it playing in theaters this holiday season.

For many horror fans, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is the most anticipated movie of 2024, perhaps even of the decade so far. It has had a troubled history with many fits and starts along the way before finally reaching screens after nearly a decade in the making (Bloody Disgusting first reported on an Eggers helmed Nosferatu in July of 2015) this Christmas Day. There is much at stake and there are big shoes to fill for this movie but if the pre-release buzz is any indication, the film may well exceed its monumental expectations.
The history of Nosferatu reaches back over one hundred years and is one of the greatest and most consistent of all horror legacies. Ostensibly retellings of Dracula, the major Nosferatu films become something unique from the world’s most famous vampire with far more sinister underpinnings than the majority of “official” Dracula stories. Nosferatu in all its forms leans into the ideas of plague,...

The concept of fate, a predestined path which has been laid out for each of us, is a terrifying one. We all have (or at least appear to have) free will, and we all cherish freedom as a precious, enviable, coveted thing. Thus, fate is the antithesis of all our hopes and desires, a monolithic force that we are powerless to change or stop. This is why the concept tends to be de-emphasized in our culture, with everything from our aspirations as children to our goals in adulthood being put in the context of free will: we're told that all we want is potentially within our grasp, that dreams can be achieved, and that paths can be changed. Fate, then, is typically invoked for purposes of a scapegoat when things go wrong. Even with that perspective, it's never seen as a force of immovable doom,...

Basic Instincts: Eggers Taps Into the Bloodlust with Vampy Remake
It would seem there’s no one more fitting than Robert Eggers to mount a remake of Nosferatu, the Bram Stoker inspired bloodsucker who first made his appearance in F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic, iconically portrayed by Max Schreck. After his 2015 debut The Witch, Eggers has spent the better part of a decade developing his passion project, which arrives bearing his celebrated signature as a master of dread. There’s no fault to be had with the accomplishments of his regular crew, including the moody production design of Craig Lathrop and the Gothic sensibilities of Dp Jarin Blaschke.…...
