The presence of those working on Hulu‘s Amanda Knox series in the Italian city of Perugia is prompting backlash after filming began near where student Meredith Kercher was found stabbed to death 17 years ago.

Residents displayed banners reading “Rispetto per Meredith” (respect for Meredith) around the city as cast and crew members for Blue Moon — executive produced by Knox herself — arrived to get production underway.

The eight-part drama, starring Grace Van Patten (Tell Me Lies), will air on the Disney-owned streaming service and detail Knox’s battle to clear her name when she was convicted of the 21-year-old’s murder in 2007.

After substantial flaws were uncovered in the initial police investigation, Knox and Italian ex-partner Raffaele Sollecito were released from prison in 2011 and definitively acquitted by the Italian Supreme Court in 2015. Hulu’s Amanda Knox series is causing an uproar in the Italian city of Perugia, where the show – executive produced by Knox herself – has been filming 17 years after the murder of Meredith Kercher.

The arrival of the show’s cast and crew last week in the university town, where Knox’s British roommate was found dead in their room on Nov. 2, 2007, has prompted angry locals to put up banners that read “Rispetto per Meredith” (“Respect for Meredith”). The outcry has led the city’s mayor, Vittoria Ferdinandi, to issue a letter of apology to Perugia citizens, which was published in Italian newspapers.

“We could have not authorized the filming of five scenes in Perugia,” the Perugia mayor said in the letter, “but they would have been filmed in any other town in our region.”

The Amanda Knox limited series at Hulu has added four new cast members, Variety has learned.

Currently titled “Amanda,” the series has added John Hoogenakker, Francesco Acquaroli, Giuseppe De Domenico, and Roberta Mattei.

The quartet join previously announced series lead Grace Van Patten as well as Sharon Horgan, who will play Knox’s mother Edda Mellas.

Hoogenakker will play Curt Knox, described as “Amanda Knox’s fun-loving but stoic father who, despite his divorce from her mother, is a great dad to his daughters. He leads the charge to defend his daughter in the press.” Acquaroli stars as Giuliano Mignini, “the Italian prosecutor in Amanda Knox’s case. A man with a need to prove himself, he’s convinced of Amanda’s involvement in the murder from the jump, and he finds his life and legacy defined by his relationship to her.”

Horgan’s Edda Mellas is Amanda Knox’s (Patten) desperate but optimistic mother. Their deep bond is challenged by Amanda’s imprisonment, but Edda’s unwavering love for her daughter propels her as she fights for Amanda’s life.

The series, created by Kj Steinberg, hails from 20th Television in association with The Littlefield Company. Steinberg executive produces alongside Warren Littlefield, Lisa Harrison, Ann Johnson, & Graham Littlefield for The Littlefield Company; Monica Lewinsky via Alt Ending Productions; and Amanda Knox & Chris Robinson of Knox Robinson Productions.

Fox Entertainment has sealed a deal with TV scribe Hank Steinberg, the exec producer behind the network’s upcoming miseason drama “Doc.” Under the agreement, the latest in what Fox calls its “broadcast direct deals,” Steinberg will develop new scripted dramas to be produced and owned by Fox for the network.

The deal was announced Thursday by Fox Television Network prexy Michael Thorn. “Hank is an invaluable creative partner and collaborator, already delivering the intense new medical procedural ‘Doc’ to the network,” Thorn said in a statement. “Expanding this relationship builds on Hank’s proven track record for creating undeniable, broad-appeal franchises, and with his incomparable voice, will bring even more incredible, unexpected entertainment to Fox’s audiences worldwide.”

Steinberg’s prolific career includes CBS’ seven-season police procedural “Without a Trace,” as well as TNT’s hit post-apocalyptic drama “The Last Ship” and ABC’s social justice legal drama “For Life.

For the second time, Hulu has found its Amanda Knox.

Tell Me Lies actress Grace Van Patten will now play Knox in the streamer’s limited series, which chronicles Knox’s wrongful conviction for the murder of her roommate. Margaret Qualley (Maid) was previously cast in the project, but exited in April due to reported scheduling conflicts.

An Italian court has reconvicted Amanda Knox of slander, the last remaining conviction stemming from the murder case of her roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007.

Knox was cleared of Kercher’s murder by the Italian supreme court in 2015. She had been convicted in 2009 of slander for falsely accusing Congolese bar owner Patrick Lumumba of murdering Kercher, and that conviction was upheld Wednesday by an appellate court in Florence.

Knox told the court Wednesday that she was “very sorry” that she “was not strong enough to resist the pressure of police”. She said, ”I didn’t know who the murderer was. I had no way to know.”

Knox wept after the verdict was announced. She was sentenced to three years in prison, but will serve no time. She had already served the length of the original slander sentence when she spent four years in detention following her wrongful imprisonment for Kercher’s murder.

Amanda Knox’s highly publicized wrongful murder conviction is still getting the limited-series treatment at Hulu, but Margaret Qualley won’t be playing her.

The Maid star has dropped out of the as-yet-untitled, based-on-a-true-story drama, according to our sister site Deadline. The exit is reportedly due to scheduling issues; the role will be recast. Qualley’s casting was first announced last month.

Margaret Qualley will play Amanda Knox in an eight-episode limited series ordered at Hulu. The show is “based on the true story of how Knox was wrongfully convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free.“

The series was created by Kj Steinberg (This Is Us), who will serve as writer and executive producer. In addition to starring as Amanda Knox, Qualley will also executive produce alongside Steinberg, Warren Littlefield, Lisa Harrison, Ann Johnson, and Graham Littlefield. Monica Lewinsky is also onboard as an executive producer, with Amanda Knox and Chris Robinson producing via Knox Robinson Productions.

This is not the first time Hulu has lost its lead actress in a limited series based on a real person. Kate McKinnon was once attached to play Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in what would become “The Dropout,” the role that was eventually played by Amanda Seyfried. Seyfried would go on to win an Emmy for her work on the show.

ABC summer series Mistresses has filled its leading quartet, tapping Blue Bloods alumna Jennifer Esposito to star alongside Jes Macallan, Rochelle Aytes and Yunjin Kim. Esposito will play Calista Raines, the uber-fabulous and larger-than-life Creative Director of a luxury fashion brand who has the high-class socialite lifestyle that goes with it. Look beneath the surface, however, and we see her loneliness too – a woman whose fun eccentricities cloak a darker, more devious nature. Calista will become Joss’ (Macallan) friend, mentor, and surrogate sister – drawing Joss deeper and deeper into a world of secrets and betrayal.

ABC announced that they have picked up summer series, Mistresses, for 13 episodes for season three. The ABC Studios-produced show stars Alyssa Milano, Yunjin Kim, Rochelle Aytes, and Jes Macallan as a close-knit group of female friends whose lives are complicated by relationship woes and illicit affairs. Executive produced by Rina Mimoun, Kj Steinberg, Robert Sertner, and Douglas Rae, the series' finale ranked second in the ratings for the 18-49 demographic in its Monday night time slot against CBS's Under the Dome, and has maintained a relatively consistent 0.9 rating in that demographic throughout the summer.

ABC's summer soap Mistresses will return. The network has renewed the summer series for a third season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Mistresses, from co-showrunners K.J. Steinberg and Rina Mimoun, is a remake of the British series of the same name, which aired only six episodes. Ricky Whittle has teased a combination of humour and sex with his arrival in Mistresses.

The former Hollyoaks actor joins the second season of the Us drama as artist Daniel, a love interest for April (Rochelle Aytes).

Speaking about Daniel's role in April's world, he told Digital Spy: "Daniel first arrives on the scene - their comments not mine - as Mr Sexy Smouldering.

"[After the first season], April was kind of the victim and things went wrong for her. So I guess Daniel's some light relief for her this season. He's going to bring her back to what she used to be, which is fun April.

"So there's gonna be a lot of fun, a lot of sex, and he's really going to try to bring her out of her shell. As in all TV shows, and especially a show called Mistresses, all is not going to be as it seems."

The proverbial (emotional) rollercoaster is careening off its rails and heading over a cliff as Season 2 of Mistresses heads into tonight’s penultimate installment and next Monday’s finale (10/9c, ABC).

And while executive producers Rina Mimoun and K.J. Steinberg can’t guarantee that every one of its leading ladies’ storylines will be wrapped up as gorgeously as a Maison Sur Mer bauble, they are promising a religious experience for Karen, an escalation of Joss’ abs-olutely gut-wrenching choice and the possible rekindling of Daniel’s status as an (FBI) agent provocateur.
