Cyrielle Raingou’s documentary “Le Spectre de Boko Haram” won the Tiger Award, the top prize of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Friday. The film follows a group of children in the north of Cameroon, an area dominated by the terrorist organization Boko Haram. Raingou is from the area herself.
“When I received this unforgettable call, I started crying. I couldn’t believe it. This recognition means the world to me and my people,” Raingou said on a video message played during the awards ceremony.
The jury deemed Raingou’s feature debut “a story that centers on its filmmakers’ patient and honest gaze on the hovering presence of violence, seen through the eyes of innocents.”
The Tiger Award, which aims to “raise the profile of and reward up-and-coming international film talent,” is accompanied by a €40,000 cash prize, to be shared between the film’s director and producer. This year’s...

Italian director Italo Spinelli speaks with Utpal Borpujari on how he chose Mahasweta Devi’s story “Choli Ke Peeche” for his debut feature Gangor.
Italo Spinelli with Mahasweta Devi
Writer-activist Mahasweta Devi’s story “Choli Ke Peeche/Behind the Bodice” is a stinging indictment of exploitation of tribals as well as the media’s insensitive, if not sensational, handling of delicate issues. It is this story that Italian director Italo Spinelli has chosen to make his debut feature film with. Spinelli, who has earlier directed several documentaries and has been a long-time India lover, shot the film on location in West Bengal’s Purulia area, of late in news for Maoist activities, with a cast that includes Love,Sex Aur Dhoka fame Priyanka Bose, Adil Hussain and Nri actor Samrat Chakraborty. After having its world premiere at the Rome Film Festival and a screening at the 41st International Film Festival of India,...

The Goa Film Festival that was from the 22nd of November to the 2nd of December and I managed to attend the first five days. Unfortunately, I got sick just after the festival and couldn’t compile the report in time. Anyway, some of the films screened here will go on to be important during award season and since that’s around the corner, I figured I’d club my impression of the festival with reviews of the films, since I had foreshadowed some of the buzz. Please keep in mind that this is not blow-by-blow and a laundry list of films reviewed but an impression of one of the biggest Asian film celebrations and the many conversations and predictions I managed to collect.

After the controversial nude scenes in Ketan Mehta's Rang Rasiya, Nandana Sen got another highly-prestigious offer that required her to go topless. Italian filmmaker Italo Spinelli offered Nandana the lead of a tribal woman who's surreptitiously shot nude by a photographer.
