The Order (2024) is a brooding investigative thriller that puts another feather in director Justin Kurzel’s cap. After following the chilling character portraits in ‘Nitram’ and ‘The Snowtown Murders,’ Kurzel returns with an equally harrowing depiction of evil in human beings. This time, he shifts his focus toward a White Supremacist terrorist group that was active in the 1980s. He paints the picture of a small American town mainly through the eyes of an FBI agent, who ends up in a cat-and-mouse chase with the terrorist group’s members. Although the plot essentially leads us toward its leader’s capture, it is more interested in interrogating the human tendencies that affect the usual order of any place; and how people react in such situations of change.

Somewhere in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, the older, more pragmatic and 'wise' leader of a hate-group fraction pays a visit to the young lion who leads the more extremist splinter of it in a more militant way. Reverend Richard Butler (Victor Slezak) warns Bob Matthews (Nicholas Hoult) that it is not the right time to take drastic action and start the war with the government, since it would be wiser to wait and do things at a more moderate pace, like getting their supporters in the Congress and in the Senate. That conversation between actual 'minor historical figures' took place in the early Eighties and now, 40 years later, it seems that Butler was more than right, since the hate groups think they even elected the president that supports them, but it still sounds like a sour joke.

Although it is not a downright masterpiece, there is nothing sour.

Santa Claus won’t be the only thing coming down the chimney this Christmas Eve, as director Justin Kurzel’s FBI thriller The Order comes to On Demand. In the film, a string of violent robberies in the Pacific Northwest leads a veteran FBI agent into a domestic terrorist plot to overthrow the federal government. What a disheartening reflection on our times that The Order ranks among the most relevant dramas of the last ten years. It shouldn’t. 2024 should not see us still struggling with the issues of white supremacy and armed extremist groups. Yet here we are.

The Order is based on the true story of Bob Mathews (Nicholas Hoult) and his followers, a violent neo-Nazi group responsible for a series of bank robberies, bombings, and murders in the 1980s. FBI Agent Terry Husk (two-time Oscar nominee Jude Law) is sent to the Pacific Northwest to investigate the Aryan Nation with little in the way of support. The local sheriff is willfully blind to the extensive presence of Nazis in his community and tries to blow off Agent Husk. But deputy sheriff Jamie Bowen steps forward, volunteering his help...

Early in “The Order,” the ’80s-set historical crime thriller, there is a chillingly timely stand-off between the staid establishment and the insurgent next generation. Aryan Nation founder Richard Butler (Victor Slezak) attempts, and fails, to defuse Bob Matthews (Nicholas Hoult), the charismatic young leader of an ultra-violent and extremely organized splinter group planning an armed white supremacist revolution. “Robert, you have a gift … a voice,” says Butler, clad in a conventional trench coat over a full suit and tie. The Order is about hate, though not quite in the way you'd expect. It seems an obvious theme, given the story follows a white supremacist terrorist cell and the FBI's effort to stop them, and some space is given to the hateful doctrine they live by. But the movie is less interested in hate ideologically as it is in the feeling. And director Justin Kurzel is less interested in explaining that feeling than he is in observing it and its effects. Surround that goal with across-the-board quality, and you have a consistently tense crime thriller that leaves a lasting mark.

You can’t fault Peacock for its timing, dropping The Independent just a week before the all-important 2022 midterm elections. Nor can you quibble with the thriller’s grounding in our contemporary political reality, in which an inexperienced celebrity candidate can vault from long shot to frontrunner simply by offering a seemingly viable exit from America’s entrenched two-party stasis, with one side fueling the country’s rage while the other “sits on its hands and whines about it.” Whether election-fatigued audiences will have an appetite for this slick but superficial depiction of moral elasticity in politics and beleaguered truth in journalism remains an open question.

As a mother, equestrian, business owner, and wife of 2016 PGA Champion Jimmy Walker, she is an active advocate for Lyme disease awareness and research. Of the many films the Tribeca Film Festival shows, one of the biggest categories that often gets overlooked is the shorts category. Shorts are most definitely much harder to make considering their limited screen time and the need to fit a whole story within that time. Taking that into consideration, the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival decided to split up its shorts submissions into various categories, including New York Now shorts program.

This array of shorts all contained some form of New York City within them, whether through history, character, story, or anything in between. There were seven shorts in the program, and they are as follows:

Philip and Elizabeth are coming close to a crossroads when faced with the reality that their kids could be killed as a result of their criminal activities in "Comrades," the second season premiere of The Americans.

Philip (Matthew Rhys) begins the episode by pulling a standard undercover operation, resulting in the death of two Afghans at his hands. The standard op, however, did not go entirely smoothly. In a moment of panic, Philip also shot an innocent busboy after his disguise was destroyed and his face was in plain sight. In a snap decision, Philip decided to kill the busboy to protect his identity.

And, no rest for the wicked means that Philip returns home to embark on yet another operation with Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and comrades Leanne (Natalie Gold) and Emmett (Jeremy Davidson), another spy couple who have two children, Jared (Owen Campbell) and Amelia (Gracie Bea Lawrence), not unlike Philip and Elizabeth.

“Northern general, southern soldier, working together to unify these United States — it’s what the country needs,” Ulysses S. Grant (guest star Victor Slezak) tells Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount). And Bohannon screwing over Thomas Durant (Colm Meaney), who files an injunction against the Union Pacific in this week’s episode of Hell on Wheels? It’s what the fans want.

The first season of The Americans came to a thrilling end in “The Colonel,” a gratifying resolver that still left plenty to ponder for Season 2.

Our favorite Directorate S agents were given two separate orders, Elizabeth (Keri Russell) was to meet the Colonel (Victor Slezak), with intelligence on President Regan’s Star Wars missile defense system, while Phillip (Matthew Rhys) was ordered to retrieve a the latest recording from Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger’s study bug, which audiences learned from last week, was compromised by Agent Gaad’s (Richard Thomas) task force.

Orders came from Claudia (Margo Martindale) in another icy exchange with Elizabeth, sparking suspicion from her and Phillip, that the meeting with the Colonel was most likely, a setup due to its sudden urgency and level of intelligence exchanged. It was finally agreed upon that they carry out the orders as planned–until Phillip changes the plans at the last minute,...

Breathe. Do not forget to breathe.

Your enjoyment of "The Americans" requires you to stay alive long enough to truly appreciate the incredible -- but real -- genius of the show's Season 1 finale. No matter how much anyone studied history or could have guessed about what was coming, "The Colonel" still managed to shock and surprise from beginning to end.

It's going to be a long almost-year to wait before we find out what happens next.

Crises of conscience and related international crises

Philip and Elizabeth Jennings (Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell) have not one but two missions to accomplish before the season ends. The first is an everyday thing: Someone has to go retrieve a recording from Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger's study bug. The other mission is a little more dangerous, as it requires one of them to meet with a Colonel who knows all about the Reagan administration's Star Wars program.

In its first season, "The Americans" has been a surprisingly tense and entertaining work of drama. Kgb spies Elizabeth and Philip Jennings (Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys) have made a compelling couple to watch as they negotiate marriage, secrecy and the Cold War.

But whatever "The Americans" has achieved throughout Season 1, it all pales in comparison to the incredible season finale, "The Colonel."

The basic plot for the finale tells you nothing of the edge-of-your-seat thrills and heartbreaking stories of the episode. In it, Philip and Elizabeth have to think about their relationship as they prepare for a meeting with a Colonel (guest star Victor Slezak) that might just be a setup. Meanwhile, Stan (Noah Emmerich) inches closer to identifying his illegal Russian spies.

The tension merely builds from here. Because doing so would partially ruin this great episode of television, there is no way we can reveal any major spoilers for "The Colonel" here.
