For writers and directors Cyrill Boss and Philipp Stennert, Wolfgang Hohlbein’s 1986 bestselling novel “Hagen von Tronje” was the ideal material to adapt not only into a feature film, but also into an epic six-part series.
The story recounts the Nibelung saga, which follows the dragon slayer Siegfried and the fate of the Burgundian kingdom, albeit from a different perspective – that of Hagen von Tronje, traditionally the antagonist of the tale, seen as a dark figure with dubious motives.
Bathing in the blood of the slain dragon is said to make Siegfried (Jannis Niewöhner) invulnerable.
In “Hagen,” which premieres at the Zurich Film Festival, the titular character (played by Dutch actor Gijs Naber) is lord commander to King Gunter (Dominic Marcus Singer) of Burgundy. With his sense of duty and iron determination, it is Hagen who holds the crisis-ridden kingdom together.
A loyal servant, disciplined and rational, Hagen faces a grave challenge when the bold,...

Move over Natalie Portman — there’s a new “Swan” coming to movie theaters this November.
The Paris Opera’s production of “Swan Lake” will come to movie theaters across the world on November 10 — but will screen in IMAX theaters November 8, because this is the first ballet ever filmed for IMAX.
The goal is to bring audiences as close to the dancers as possible as they navigate the classic ballet (this production uses the Rudolf Nureyev choreography). According to press notes, filming took four days, including two days without an audience, allowing the cameras to join the dancers onstage at the Paris Opera in an additional pas de deux. And for true balletomanes, this “Swan Lake” also uses next-generation IMAX precision sound.
Directed by Isabelle Julien, the “Swan Lake” cast includes Sae Eun Park as Odette/Odile, Paul Marque as Prince Siegfried, Pablo Legasa as Rothbart, and Paris Opera Corps de Ballet.

Before "Austin Powers," "Johnny English," and "Top Secret!" there was "Get Smart," the 1960s spy sitcom that mined the genre for laughs when the James Bond and "Mission: Impossible" franchises were still in their infancies. Co-created by comedy legends Mel Brook and Buck Henry, "Get Smart" ran for five seasons from 1965 to 1970, earning seven Primetime Emmys and plenty of other accolades along the way.
Stand-up comedian Don Adams starred as Maxwell Smart, the sometimes inept top-secret agent who regularly held the fate of the world in his hands ... and often almost fumbled it. By his side was the beautiful, super-cool Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), who loves Maxwell despite his clumsiness and penchant for messing up missions. The central trio was rounded out by Edward Platt's The Chief, the supportive leader of the intelligence agency Control, which employed both Agent 99 and Maxwell.

In the midst of World War 2, a mysterious energy source is unearthed that could reshape the global order. Sumerian Six takes us on a stealthy adventure through this history-meets-mythology setting. Developed by Artificer, this real-time tactics game casts us as members of a team racing to contain a dangerous discovery.
During the early 20th century, a British scientist named Alistair Sterling assembled a clever crew to research an intriguing material called Geiststoff. This substance, seemingly drawing power from ancient Sumerian legends, had potential for furthering scientific progress. But after an unfortunate mishap, the so-called Enigma Squad deemed it too unpredictable to toy with further.
Fast forward a few years to the rise of Nazi Germany. One of Sterling’s former colleagues, Hans Kammler, now promises Adolf Hitler control over this mysterious energy source. As head of the shadowy SS-Geistesstärke program, Kammler appears set to weaponize whatever secrets this “Ghost Power” holds.

The second part of Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou’s adaptation of the epic poem, Kriemhild’s Revenge picks up directly where the first part, Siegfried, left off. The legendary hero is dead, and his wife – though it was partly her stupidity that led to it – is seriously pissed off. She blames royal advisor Hagen Tronje (Hans Adalbert Sclettow), but her brother King Gunther (Theodor Loos) won’t let her kill him – to do so would be to break a bond of honour. Engaging directly in violence, as a woman, is apparently not something she can conceive of, but she does have other options. She is still young and beautiful, and with access to Siegfried’s famous hoard of treasure, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a new husband.
Kriemhild has a very particular husband in mind: one of history’s most famous conquerors, Attila the Hun.

It’s natural that, while you may want to stay on the cutting edge of prestige TV drama and join in all those “How great is Shogun?!” conversations of the moment, there are also times when the world makes you want to shrink down to the size of a Subbuteo player, step into a book illustration from a copy of Thumbelina you owned as a child, and go to sleep underneath a single feather inside a walnut shell.
Those walnut shell moments demand a TV accompaniment that isn’t noisy or confrontational. There should be no difficult thoughts there, just a gentle tide of ‘everything’s okay-ness’ lapping at your brain’s shore. These British TV shows all provide exactly that sense of comfort. Please recommend your own picks below.

On Wednesday, Fremantle revealed that it had secured worldwide distribution rights, outside of German-speaking territories, to the premium fantasy drama “Hagen” — a working title — from Constantin Film. Variety spoke to Jan Ehlert, one of the producers on the show, and Jens Richter, CEO commercial and international at Fremantle, about why they backed the ambitious production, which is budgeted at around Euros 45 million ($48.8 million) and will be produced as a six-part series and a feature film for theatrical release.
“Hagen,” which is based on Wolfgang Hohlbein’s bestselling novel “Hagen von Tronje,” is a reimagining of the medieval “Nibelungen” folk saga. The story is considered to be one of the inspirations behind modern fantasies such as “Game of Thrones” and J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.”

Constantin Film has released the first images from Hagen, its hotly-anticipated new fantasy drama, which is looking to tap into the global Game of Thrones and Vikings fan base with a swords-and-magic tale inspired by the Teutonic Nibelungen saga.
Fremantle has picked up worldwide distribution rights outside German-speaking territories to the series from Constantin. Fremantle parent Rtl Group holds German streaming and free TV rights.
The series is based on Wolfgang Hohlbein’s Hagen von Tronje, a reimagining of the Niebelungen saga, the medieval German folk tale considered the inspiration for such modern-day fantasy epics as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings.
Hagen follows the story of the soldier Hagen, the legendary dragon slayer Siegfried, the princess warrior Kriemhild, and the magical Valkyrie queen Brunhild in a tale of love, family, power and war that ends —this is a Germanic tale after all — catastrophically.

For years, the simmering romance between Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) and Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley) has been more of a "won't-they" than a "will-they," but that finally stands to change in the wake of the All Creatures Great and Small Season 4 finale, "The Home Front."
Though Siegfried and Mrs. Hall end the season in uncharted territory, their romantic prospects weren't looking good heading into the episode. All signs pointed to Mrs. Hall, now free to remarry after learning her divorce has been finalized, leaving the Yorkshire Dales with Gerald (Will Thorp), her kind, garden-loving boyfriend. They made plans to move to the Lake District, where Gerald's sister has been recovering from an illness, and even got engaged, with Mrs. Hall proclaiming that "this is [their] chance to be together," and if they don't take it, they "might always regret it."...

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the short-lived anthology horror satire “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters,” which aired on TruTV back in 2018.
Although these days it’s known mainly as the channel on cable that plays “Impractical Jokers” all day, every day, back in 2018, Tru TV sought out to try some different programming. After successfully pulling away from their line up of reality shows, the network aimed to deliver a hefty line up of original comedy series, many of which ended up being damn good.
Among the line up introduced, there was “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters.” Comedian, actor, and director Goldthwait is no stranger to the horror genre (I loved his found footage film Willow Creek), and was the mastermind behind this delightfully unusual horror anthology series. Every week, “Misfits & Monsters” told a variety of half hour stories, all of which were a healthy mix of dark comedy,...

Every race needs a finish line. For the “Fast & Furious” franchise, the studio keeps shoving it farther down the road, at least according to Vin Diesel, who suggested at the world premiere of the 10th installment — a brainless but action-packed thrill ride billed as “Fast X” — that Universal might split the “finale” over three movies. Why not seven? Or 20 more, for that matter? That might allow Diesel to merge these increasingly desperate sequels with his other running-on-fumes franchise, “XXX.”
The producer-star has a way of mouthing off around the release of each new “Fast” movie (remember hints that an all-female spinoff might be coming?), which feels counterproductive, considering that a key part of Diesel’s appeal comes from the rumbling-Harley-voiced actor’s capacity to reduce complex thoughts to terse catchphrases.
