Veria Living is a fellow health and wellness media company like Live Well Network, the ABC Owned Television Stations’ digital platform that ABC said yesterday it would shutter in January after five years. The move made an impression on Veria CEO Eric Sherman, who teed off on the business. “Beyond any implications about local broadcasting or the future of a multicasting distribution model, what’s most noteworthy is the impact on viewers,” he said in a statement released last night. “There surely is no shortage of options for those interested in adult-themed and salacious programming, yet once again the media world is turning its back on those who desire positive, wellness content.” According to Broadcasting & Cable. ABC did not say how many Live Well jobs might be affected; Live Well’s original programming was produced both by ABC stations and outside stations. “Despite Live Well’s tremendous accomplishments in distribution and original programming,...

What’s Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler’s manager doing running a little-known cable channel dedicated to healthy living? Eric Sherman appreciates how incongruous this sounds. “Chasing a rock star all over the planet doesn’t necessarily lead to opportunities to lead a healthy life,” he tells me. But the subject’s personally important to him — and he couldn’t resist the opportunity to try to build a multimedia brand the way he did as President of Fuse TV, and Gm of MTV Networks’ VH1 Classic, VH1 Soul, VH1 County, MTV Espanol, and Palladia. Privately held Veria Living was created by Subhash Chandra, chairman of Zee Group — India’s second largest media company — to promote Eastern wellness practices. But cable and satellite companies have little interest in picking up new channels, especially independent ones. Veria Living doesn’t disclose its total household distribution and only runs on a few systems including Cablevision,...

It was a sad off-season for 'Celebrity Rehab,' which saw two former patients, Mike Starr and Jeff Conaway, die of drug overdoses. With the show returning for its fifth season Sunday night, June 26, on VH1, we're starting to feel more and more conflicted about tuning in. Rumors that Michael Lohan was paid $180K to go on the show this season and that Rachel Uchitel was paid $500K last season add to a cloud of ethical issues swirling around the show.
We had questions: Are we watching glorified train-wreck TV, or real rehab where good work can be done? And why is the show so, dare we say, addictive to watch? We had to talk to a shrink to sort it all out.
"I feel that 'Celebrity Rehab' does for rehab and substance abuse what the 'Jersey Shore' does for New Jersey," says Eric Sherman, Lcsw,...

Rocker Steven Tyler has completed 30 days of "intensive sobriety treatment" in a California rehabilitation clinic after publicly acknowledging he was struggling with a painkiller addiction. The former Aerosmith star, who fell from a stage in South Dakota during a show last summer, is now undergoing a 90-day "residential day treatment program," according to a statement from the singer's management company, Tenth Street Entertainment.

As performances go, Steven Tyler nailed it. The longtime Aerosmith frontman, who announced in December that he had entered rehab for pain management and an addiction to prescription painkillers, put on a brief show in the unlikeliest of places: a Home Depot. Last Saturday, the singer, 61, visited the home improvement store's outlet in Rancho Mirage, Calif., where he serenaded shoppers over the p.a. system with Aerosmith hits "Dude Looks Like a Lady" and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." Oddly, it wasn't his only impromptu desert gig lately. On Jan. 19, he also joined a group of people at the Tilted Kilt,...
