A pair of moderate releases with a handful of docs and titles in limited release topline an end-of-summer specialty market. Labor Day weekend can be slow and indie openings are up against few new wide releases and holdovers from Deadpool & Wolverine to Inside Out 2. Meanwhile, the Venice film festival, with Telluride and TIFF coming soon, is generating indie headlines and the new crop of arthouse films.

There has been and will continue to be many Covid-related lawsuits in the entertainment industry. Here’s a new one that will buy a couple of producers some time — one way or the other.

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to star in the World War II film “War Magician,” with “Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow attached to direct.
Though Cumberbatch has flexed his magic skills as Marvel’s Doctor Strange, this next film will cast him as a British soldier who uses his skills as an illusionist to fight in World War II. “War Magician” is based on a book by David Fisher and is based on the real life story of Jasper Maskelyne, who was a world famous magician in the 1930s but is best known today for his work in the war, where he claimed to create large scale ruses, camouflage and deception as a means of defeating the Nazis.
The book in particular shows how he managed to “hide” the Suez Canal from German bombers or made fake portable craters — or “bomb holes” — to make the enemy think they hit their target.

Bob Cooper and Richard Saperstein’s Los Angeles-based production company has unveiled details of its Second World War double agent thriller.
Isaac will portray Juan Pujol Garcia, a man who without any special training managed to persuade the Germans and the British to hire him as a spy and won gallantry medals from both sides.
in reality his allegiance lay with MI5 and through a fake network of agents Garcia helped the British fool the Germans about the June 1944 Normandy landings, a critical juncture in the war.
William Wheeler wrote the screenplay and Cooper, Saperstein, Chuck Weinstock, Jason Spire, and Isaac will produce.
“Juan Pujol Garcia is unlike any character we’ve seen on film – he’s a chameleon and a master manipulator, deeply haunted by his past, with an unreadable agenda… and his actions have world-changing consequences,” said Cooper, who is attending Berlin for the screening of Maudie and will discuss the project with buyers.

It’s a match made in stoner-heaven! Deadline reports that a live-action remake of Troma’s hilariously gruesome B-movie, The Toxic Avenger, is being developed at Bob Cooper and Richard Saperstein’s Storyscape Entertainment, with Sausage Party co-helmer Conrad Vernon on board to direct. Arnold Schwarzenegger was actually attached to star in an earlier incarnation, but has since walked away.
For those in need of a Toxie history lesson, the original was a 1984 horror comedy directed by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman for Troma Entertainment. The story focused on a nerdy janitor named Melvin, who falls into a toxic waste drum and emerges as a hideously deformed, freakishly strong superhero. The film was virtually ignored upon its release, but has since become regarded as a cult classic, spawning several sequels, comic books and even a short-lived animated series.
