Three years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and had little to do with the source material. Earlier this year, it was announced that Glen Powell of Top Gun: Maverick, Hit Man, and Twisters is following in the footsteps of Schwarzenegger to play the lead role in the new adaptation – and now we’re starting to hear the names of some of his co-stars. Last week, it was announced that Katy O’Brian, who had a breakthrough role in Love Lies Bleeding and shared the screen with Powell in Twisters, had signed on to play one of the contestants in the film. Now,...

Exclusive: After breaking tackles for six seasons on the hit CW series All American, Daniel Ezra has found a new challenge to run away from as sources tell Deadline he is set to join Paramount’s reimagining of The Running Man starring Glen Powell. Katy O’Brian is also on board with Edgar Wright directing the pic. Wright will also produce with his producing partner Nira Park and Simon Kinberg. Wright co-wrote script with Michael Bacall.
Based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King that the author first published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, Running Man was made famous by the 1987 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. King’s futuristic novel is a chase thriller set in a dystopian America in the year 2025. The story centers on Ben Richards, a desperate man who participates in violent reality show called The Running Man in order to win enough money to revive his gravely ill daughter.

Just a couple of short weeks ago, Edgar Wright's zombie horror-comedy Shaun Of The Dead turned 20 years old. But with time inexorably marching on — running on, even — our attention is already being turned back to the British filmmaker's next movie, a new retooling of Stephen King's dystopian sci-fi novel The Running Man. Having already nabbed the highly in-demand Glen Powell to take on the Arnold Schwarzenegger role from the classic 1987 movie, Deadline are reporting that Wright has snapped up Love Lies Bleeding breakout Katy O'Brian to get her running shoes on and co-star in his latest.
Co-written by Wright and his Scott Pilgrim co-scribe Michael Bacall, early indications suggest that this version of The Running Man will see Powell playing less of the conventional tough guy Arnie inhabited back in the 80s, hewing closer instead to the Ben Richards of King's book. The core plot however, whilst less...

Paramount Pictures' and director Edgar Wright's long-gestating adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man is finally moving forward with Glen Powell in the lead role of Ben Richards, and one supporting cast member has now been confirmed.
Daniel Richtman recently claimed that Katy O'Brian was being eyed for a supporting role in the project, and THR is reporting that she has officially joined the cast.
We had assumed that O'Brian would play one of the two significant female characters in the book - Richards' wife Shelia or his hostage, Amelia - but the trade reveals that she will actually play another contestant on the lethal TV show of the title.
O'Brian had a small role in season 3 of The Mandalorian, and also played Jentorra in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She's been getting a lot of attention in Hollywood thanks to her more recent work in Love Lies Bleeding.

We recently learned that Paramount Pictures' and Edgar Wright's long-gestating adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man is finally moving forward with Glen Powell in the lead role of Ben Richards, and rumors are beginning to swirl about the movie's supporting cast.
Following on from a recent report that Sydney Sweeney - who previously starred alongside Powell in romantic comedy Anyone But You - is being eyed to play the female lead, Daniel Richtman has heard that Katy O'Brian is also up for an undisclosed supporting role.
No details on who she would play, but there are really only two significant female characters in the book: Richards' wife Shelia and his hostage, Amelia.
O'Brian had a small role in season 3 of The Mandalorian, and also played Jentorra in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She's been getting a lot of attention in Hollywood thanks to her more recent work in Love Lies Bleeding.

After co-starring in Anyone But You, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell look like they’re set to reunite for Edgar Wright’s take on The Running Man.
While it’s by no means a done deal, reporter Daniel Richtman is claiming that Sydney Sweeney is in line to star in the new take on The Running Man alongside Glen Powell. The two actors generated lots of headlines for their 2023 romcom Anyone But You, with their very successful press tour lighting up the world of social media and presumably being one of the reasons that the film went on to gross $220m theatrically from a $25m budget. Cripes.
Onscreen, the duo enjoyed plenty of chemistry too and perhaps that’s why Edgar Wright is said to be looking at entreating Sweeney to star opposite Powell in his adaptation of Stephen King’s dystopian tale. The film is set to enter production...

Glen Powell is set to play Ben Richards in Paramount Pictures' and Edgar Wright's long-gestating adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man, and we may know who'll be joining him as the movie's female lead.
According to reliable insider Daniel Richtman, Sydney Sweeney - who previously starred alongside Powell in romantic comedy Anyone But You - is being eyed to play an undisclosed role. There are a number of characters from the book she could play, but we'd say Ben's hostage, Amelia Williams, is the most likely possibility.
Sweeney is fast-becoming one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood after starring in the likes of Anyone But You and Immaculate, and is also set to play the title role in another upcoming Edgar Wright sci-fi re-adaptation, Barbarella.
Of course, Sweeney also played Julia Cornwall/Spider-Woman in Sony Pictures' Madame Web, but is highly unlikely to reprise the...

Edgar Wright is officially making The Running Man, a new version of Stephen King’s novel last adapted in 1987. Here’s how it could differ from that earlier one:
Most readers would likely agree that The Running Man isn’t the best of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cycle of action movie vehicles from the 1980s and early 1990s, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t memorable. If you’ve seen it, you can probably quote a line or two (“Sub-Zero… now plain zero!”), or remember Richard Dawson’s captivatingly oily turn as game show host, Jack Killian.
You might recall the almost musical note that one of the villains, Buzzsaw (Gus Rethwisch), manages to hit when a chainsaw’s applied to his nether regions. Or even remember the bafflement of seeing rockers Mick Fleetwood and Dweezil Zappa show up.
Directed by Paul Michael Glaser and written by Steven E de Souza,...

Well, I warned you. Kind of. While today’s story is released with Stephen King’s name plastered all over it, at the time of its release The Running Man was under the name of Richard Bachman, who had some dark stories attached to him. I was planning on doing this for a while but with the news that Edgar Wright is going to tackle the story in a new version that hopefully is closer to the book, it makes too much sense to talk about this dystopian horror now. While it’s a stalwart of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s catalogue of action, especially that range from 1987 to 1991, it’s not often looked at as a premiere Stephen King adaptation. It’s not expressly seen as horror but when it gets boiled down, both book and film, it’s horrific what happens in both stories and what’s going on in the worlds of both medias.

Intro: At the time of writing this episode of Arnie Revisited, it’s just been confirmed that Hollywood is once again scouring popular IP with the upcoming reboot of The Running Man from Edgar Wright, with rising star Glen Powell attached to the project. The Top Gun: Maverick actor is certainly hot property right now, having just cosied up to Sydney Sweeney in Anyone But You. However, it was another actor, whose star was crashing through the sky in the 80s, who first took on the adaptation of Stephen King’s short story, which was written under his Richard Bachman pen name.
Arnie had just battled camouflaged alien hunters in Predator, released in June 1987, and the same year saw him take on another action sci-fi project, albeit this time with less aliens but similarly memorable action and one-liners. It was quite a departure from the original short story, but the...

The Running Man (1987) was one of Stephen King's earliest books. In a dystopian version of America's future, an impoverished family man named Ben Richards struggles to deal with unemployment and his daughter's mounting medical bills. In desperation, Richards signs up to be on 'The Running Man', a reality show where contestants try to evade highly trained killers. For every hour that they survive, they earn money. If they manage to live for 30 days, they win 1 billion dollars.
Richards has no hope of winning – he's just your average guy, without the physical prowess it will take to outrun and outfight his pursuers. He knows that competing on the show will kill him, but he hopes to live long enough to earn the money it will take to save his family.
Some Major Changes
Five years after the publication of The Running Man, the book was adapted for the big screen.

The ultra-charming and very handsome actor Glen Powell is having quite a run right now, but my dude is far from an overnight success. His first role was as "Long-fingered Boy" in Robert Rodriguez's "Spy Kids 3" more than 20 years ago, and since then, he's been steadily building his way to stardom. Small roles in "The Great Debaters," "The Dark Knight Rises," and "The Expendables 3" laid the groundwork for his star-making, charisma-filled performance in 2016's "Everybody Wants Some!!" In 2018, he helped resurrect the rom-com with the one-two punch of Netflix films "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" (a delightful and underrated gem) and the more popular "Set It Up" opposite Zoey Deutch, which launched him to Internet Boyfriend status.

In fact, the book is very different to the movie as a whole, so we're fascinated to see what Wright and his...

Three years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger – and even though that movie was very different from the source material, Schwarzenegger is still a tough act to follow. But now we know who’s brave enough to take on the challenge. Paramount has announced that Edgar Wright’s The Running Man is set to star Glen Powell of Top Gun: Maverick!
Wright is producing the film with Nira Park and Simon Kinberg.
King’s novel has the following description: It was the ultimate death game in a nightmare future America. The year is 2025 and reality TV has grown to the point where...

Originally reported way back in 2021, Edgar Wright is directing a new take on Stephen King’s The Running Man, and Paramount has announced out of CinemaCon today that Glen Powell will star.
Edward Wright will direct the brand new movie adaptation of Stephen King’s novel and he will also produce along with his producing partner Nira Park and Simon Kinberg.
King’s novel, published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, was released in 1982, loosely adapted into the same-titled Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring film in 1987.
Deadline reminds, “King’s futuristic novel is a chase thriller set in a dystopian America in the year 2025. The story centers on Ben Richards, a desperate man who participates in violent reality show “The Running Man” in order to win enough money to revive his gravely ill daughter. The show follows Richards being chased by numerous hunters, sent to kill him.”

Handsome man Glen Powell better get his sneakers on, because he's about to become "The Running Man." Powell will star in Edgar Wright's new adaptation of the Stephen King/Richard Bachman novel, as was announced today at CinemaCon, where we have boots on the ground in the form of our own Ryan Scott. Powell will play the lead character Ben Richards, a man living in a dystopian future where people desperate for money participate in a reality game show where they're hunted for sport. He'll also likely spend the movie looking very handsome and being very charming, because that's his whole thing.
Powell stole the show in "Top Gun: Maverick," and was recently seen in the surprisingly delightful rom-com "Anyone But You." Next, he'll appear in the "Twister" follow-up "Twisters" and the Richard Linklater comedy "Hit Man," which is headed to Netflix. Powell has been working for a while now,...

Stephen King is inarguably one of the most adapted authors in the world. The reigning overlord of the horror genre has seen his work translated to film and TV almost continually since his first novel, Carrie, was adapted in 1976. While he’s had his ups and downs in terms of success in those venues, it’s almost a certainty that the King adaptations will continue as the author himself keeps working well into his sixth decade as a published writer.
Naturally, most of the adaptations of King’s work focus on his horror or horror-adjacent output: just about everything from 1,000-page behemoths like the post-apocalyptic The Stand to 10-page short stories like the single-setting monster tale “The Boogeyman” have found their way to the screen. But while filmmakers and creators gravitate toward the King material that they think will scare audiences – after all, that’s his brand – some of the...

Chances are, if you’ve started watching Squid Game, then you’ve finished watching Squid Game. Netflix’s Korean social thriller is highly suspenseful, driving viewers through its nine episodes to its chilling conclusion with an anxiety-inducing urgency. The story of 456 desperate people who play a deadly game for the chance to win a ₩45.6billion ($39 million) prize, Squid Game is a familiar premise executed masterfully, which means that if you’re looking for more stories like Squid Game, then you’re in luck; the “deadly competition” trope is a very popular one. Like other standouts in the subgenre, there is nothing quite like Squid Game, but there’s still many, many TV shows and movies worth watching if you’re looking for something that delves into some of the same themes and scenarios as the addictive Netflix drama. Here are our recommendations…

“I’ll be back” is the signature line of the Terminator movie franchise, with either the catchphrase itself or a variation on it being said in all six films in the series to date. It’s such an iconic line, though, that it’s actually spread out into other movies totally unrelated to the James Cameron sci-fi saga. Well, apart from one thing: they all star Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Yes, the Austrian Oak has called back to his most famous role while playing various other characters across his career. In fact, there are a total of eight non-Terminator films in which he’s said the line, and here’s a quick rundown of them all…

The wave of movies and television shows based on Stephen King properties shows no sign of ending, and it seems that this will include even more reboots as after Pet Sematary back in the spring, we could now be getting a new version of The Running Man. The 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle represented a loose adaptation of King’s original book, which was written under his pseudonym of Richard Bachman, and according to sources close to We Got This Covered – the same ones who told us the leads in Ghostbusters 3 would be young teens, and that Jonah Hill would be starring in The Batman – a remake is now in the early stages development.
Unfortunately, we weren’t told which studio is handling it and domestic and international rights for the pic are heavily segmented. You see, TriStar Pictures (now Sony) had a theatrical release in 1987, but Lionsgate were behind a Blu-ray release in the 2010s.

The Dead Zone (1983)
It’s impossible to imagine another actor playing Johnny Smith, the clairvoyant coma survivor at the center of King’s creepy tale, with as much haunted intensity as Christopher Walken brought to David Cronenberg’s superb adaptation. That’s why a modern remake of “The Dead Zone” would be wise to expand the role of Greg Stillson, the unhinged political candidate portrayed by Martin Sheen the first time around. Luckily, King’s bestseller includes several frightening scenes with the deranged character that weren’t included in the original film. From campy to gruesome to terrifying, there's an adaptation for everyone. These are the best Stephen King movies.
This Stephen King article contains major spoilers.
Stephen King, the master of horror and one of America's most important writers, has enjoyed a very successful career, thanks to his prolific pen and the many adaptations his tales have inspired, whether it be in the movies or on TV. While for many fans, King means creepy novels like It or 'Salem's Lot and sprawling epics like The Dark Tower series and The Stand, others have flocked around the stuff based on his work. And for good reason: has any other modern writer inspired as many cinematic classics? King might even be the best-adapted writer in literary history. At least it's easy for a nerd to think so.
