Emily is married to actor Edward Petherbridge, with whom she costarred in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (1982), "Busman's Honeymoon" and "Pomp and Circumstance".

She has two children with her husband Edward Petherbridge, a daughter Dora (born 1983) and a son Arthur (born 1986). She also has a stepson David (born 1965), from her husband's first marriage.
