Studiocanal has announced a partnership with French production and sales company WTFilms (What The Films).
The collaboration will focus on genre films to produce and distribute French language and European content with global appeal.
The partnership is a further sign of Studiocanal’s desire to increase its presence in the genre space and follows the recent announcement of Jed Benedict’s return to the company to run a new genre label.
The French production team at Studiocanal will work together with Benedict on the WTFilms partnership and development slate.
The agreement was signed at the end of February 2024 follows a successful collaboration on Xavier Gens’ 2023 action movie Farang.
The France and Thailand-set picture, which Deadline spotlighted as a Global Breakout last summer, stars actor and former kickbox champion Nassim Lyes plays Sam as a prisoner forced on the run when his past violently catches up with him.

For an action movie called “Mayhem!” and produced by the French outfit known as WTFilms, “Cold Skin” director Xavier Gens’ latest genre exercise starts off as a rather subdued affair that doesn’t seem all that eager to earn its title. An enjoyably hackneyed and machete-happy tale about an ex-con’s tragic first stab at a second chance, Gens’ Thailand-set foray into Gareth Evans territory is more than 40 minutes old before it borders on anything worthy of an exclamation point, and even by the time it’s over this slow-bruising riff on “The Raid” barely rises to the level of a low-key hullabaloo despite its promise of absolute pandemonium.
That isn’t necessarily a knockout blow against it. Inspired by his collaboration with Evans on “Gangs of London,” but aware that he lacks his colleague’s bone-crunching touch, Gens does his best to make the movie’s simple revenge porn...

It’s been just over six months since Deadline launched our fortnightly Global Breakouts strand, in which we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. We therefore thought it high time that we remind you of some of the prospective hits we’ve profiled over the past half-year. From a Sopranos-esque Israeli drama to a buzzy French action movie to the next big Dutch format, scroll on for the best of the 2023 Breakouts.
Nordland (Denmark)
Our first Scandi drama of what we are sure will be many came from Denmark, where young filmmaker Kasper Møller Rask had followed the Coen Brothers’ lead by forging a crime series, with just a hint of irreverence, for local network Dr. “I wanted to make a young person’s crime show for my 15-year-old self,” Rask told Deadline, before spotlighting how his show was anything but the next Stranger Things.

IFC Films has acquired Xavier Gens’ action spectacle “Mayhem!” (“Farang”) from Studiocanal ahead of its premiere at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival.
Produced by Vincent Roget (Same Player) and Dimitri Stephanides (WTFilms), “Mayhem!” will be released in 2024.
“Xavier Gens has crafted an energetic and propulsive film, showcasing some of the most impressive fight choreography we have ever seen,” said Scott Shooman, head of AMC Networks’ Film Group.
“While winking at films like ‘The Raid’ and ‘Taken,’ Xavier has made a film which stands on its own as an iconic new member of the hand-to-hand action canon. We are thrilled to be working with the immensely talented team to bring this riveting story to theaters,” he added.
Shot in France and Thailand, “Mayhem!” stars Nassim Lyes as Sam. When he gets out of prison, he finds it difficult to escape the reach of a local gang lord. He heads to Thailand,...

This week we visit French director Xavier Gens’s Thailand-set fight-fest Farang, which has shown independent French action movies can hold their own in cinemas and find international buyers. Released against a real-life background of fury towards the police following the killing of a French teenager during a traffic stop in June, the film has shown there remains an appetite for genre movie in the country.

The London Action Fest’s weekend events kicked off on Saturday at Picturehouse Central with a screening of Chia-Liang Liu’s phenomenal The Legend of Drunken Master (Aka Drunken Master 2), a highly sought action classic that’s overdue a remastered Blu ray release.
Following this was the first panel event: The World in Action- Celebrating Asian Action Cinema with Joey Ansah, Mike Fury (journalist and author) and Jude Poyer.
The guests talked about what drew them to Asian cinema, citing early exposure to ninja films on VHS, a martial artist Pe teacher, and sneaking into late night screenings of Hong Kong films, in Soho.
A sequence from Sammo Hung’s Dragons Forever, starring Jackie Chan, was then presented, and the panel discussed why the film is so special, citing hand-to-hand combat and frenetic editing. They also talked about how Hong Kong cinema was better than American action films of the time,...

With Gangs of London out now in full on Sky Atlantic and Cinemax, and generating a lot of great buzz, it’s no wonder eyes are on what co-creator Gareth Evans will do next. While speculation is rife as to whether Gangs will get a second season, Evans has been working on a different project in lockdown.
“I’ve been developing a film while we’ve been in post-production. All of my energy and all of my thinking has been on the film at the moment,” he says, chatting to Den of Geek on Zoom from the back garden of his house.
“Hopefully when all of this craziness lifts and the industry kick-starts back into life, I can jump into that film then and then get that one off the ground,” he says. “I started writing it probably about five months ago now. Really since being in lockdown, obviously I...

He Who Dares, the latest film from Paul Tanter (The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan), has officially wrapped production. The movie is a British action thriller described as a cross between The Raid and Die Hard. And with a description like that, our interest is understandably piqued.
Due out at the end of the year, we’ve been given the first poster for He Who Dares to debut, bearing the slogan, ‘Fight. Kill. Win.’ Just the kind of sentiment you want from an action film.
On Christmas Eve a group of ruthless masked terrorists kidnap the Prime Minister’s daughter, fortifying themselves in an underground car park rigged with explosives. Crack Sas operative Chris Lowe and his team are sent in and must take the building one level at a time.
