Exclusive: Brett and Drew Pierce (The Wretched) have been tapped to write and direct the supernatural horror Room 428 for Screen Gems.
Details as to the film’s plot are being kept under wraps. But filmmaker Scott Derrickson, screenwriter C. Robert Cargill and Sherryl Clark are on board to produce for Crooked Highway. News of the trio’s latest project follows the release of their hit horror feature The Black Phone, which Derrickson directed from his and Cargill’s script, which was itself based on the short story of the same name penned by Joe Hill. The project also marks a return to Screen Gems for Derrickson, who previously directed the films The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Deliver Us from Evil for the studio. Scott Strauss and Giselle Johnson will oversee Room 428 for Screen Gems.

2020 has not been an easy year on cinemagoers, in fact it has been the worst since some of the earlier days of the medium. Still, despite the disappointed sighs that have grown among audiences when hearing another much anticipated film has been delayed further, there has been some plucky films that have thrived at this time of panic. Many of these films have been ones which have solely enjoyed huge VOD success but Brett and Drew T. Pierce’s (known and credited collectively as The Pierce Brothers) horror film The Wretched, is a film which has indeed hit VOD but also cinemas, doing particularly well at select drive-ins Stateside, as it topped the box office six weekends running. The first since Avatar to do so (obviously with wildly different box office takings). And little wonder too, because The Wretched is a film perfect for a drive-in experience and a brilliant throwback horror flick.

IFC’s horror movie “The Wretched” passed the $1 million mark after a month of drive-in movie theater buzz.
The indie film took in $162,000 at 95 sites over the weekend. After premiering at the 2019 Fantasia International Film Festival, it launched on May 1 at just 11 drive-ins, including the Mission Tiki in Montclair, Calif., where it had an informal premiere.
Written and directed by Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, “The Wretched” follows a young boy who discovers an evil witch in the nearby woods. The cast includes John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda, Zarah Mahler, Azie Tesfai and Jamison Jones.
“Anyone who at this point disputes or discounts the power of the big screen experience need only look at the stellar ongoing drive-in performance of IFC’s ‘The Wretched,'” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
Meanwhile, Quiver’s thriller “Becky” was at the top of the small but growing U.S. box office with $178,186 at 42 locations.

Something Derivative This Way Comes: The Pierce Bros. More Wicker than Wicked in Witchy Thriller
The dead aren’t so much evil in The Wretched, the highly polished sophomore effort from directing brothers Brett and Drew T. Pierce, as they are covetous of pricey lakeshore property. Or so one could assume for the motivation of the witches lurking in the woods from the duo who last tackled zombies with their 2011 debut Deadheads.

While vampires and zombies are evergreen horror movie favorites, the motion picture arts have not been particularly kind to that bush-league cousin, the killer tree-spirit. Two of the better-known among relatively few examples are esteemed by bad movie aficionados: There was 1957’s drive-in special “From Hell It Came,” in which an actor lumbering around in a large tree-stump costume squeezed victims to death with his branches; and 1990’s “The Guardian,” a homicidal-wood-nymph thriller that flopped so badly director William Friedkin omitted any mention of it from his otherwise comprehensive career memoir.
There will, happily, be no such cringing required by either makers or viewers of “The Wretched,” an accomplished second feature by Brett and Drew T. Pierce (billed as “the Pierce Brothers”) that is good fun in a vaguely retro, “Lost Boys”-type teen horror way. The absence of marquee value in cast or franchise terms may relegate it to home formats.

Directors/writers: Brett Pierce, Drew T. Pierce. Cast: John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda, Jamison Jones, Azie Tesfai and Zarah Mahler. The Wretched is the latest horror film from the Pierce Bros.. Recently completed, the film had its World Premiere in Montreal. At Fantasia, the cast and crew were in attendance to give a behind-the-scenes point-of-view on the film's production and story. Based on the Boo Hag, a witch has come to town and protagonist Ben (John-Paul Howard) has some strange, new neighbours. Meanwhile, there is lots of action on-screen to keep the film moving along at a quick clip. Not to be missed, The Wretched provides lots of chills and a great story to entertain film fans. The film begins with Ben. Ben is not happy with his parent's recent divorce. But, he is even less happy when his new neighbours begin to act strangely. One mother, Abbie (Zarah Mahler), is inhabited by a creature,...

A witch that feeds on forgotten children has taken hold of a sleepy lakeside village in Michigan. It’s because its victims are “forgotten,” however, that nobody ever seems to notice. Not only do the adults assist it by either providing themselves as vessel (it steps into the skin of women) or servant (men are turned to drones with a whisper), they have no reason to fight back since what they would be fighting for no longer exists to them. Maybe this “dark mother” will infiltrate a target’s home and steal away control from within or perhaps it will lure in unsuspecting bystanders who still remember and thus have become liabilities. We can never know how long it’s been happening and ultimately must assume it’s never stopped.
As a result, writers/directors Brett and Drew T. Pierce don’t have to pretend this supernatural creature isn’t real.

As the fort is surrounded by zombies and the zombies start to get in the fort, the geeks must decide what their next step is. Everyone knows that when two groups join up in a zombie movie, it means people are going to die. Do the geeks abandon these new people, kill them, or what?...

Right off the bat, I enjoyed DeadHeads for what it was and I had quite a few laughs along the ride. And this film is definitely a ride, it’s a zombie/comedy/buddy/roadtrip film and I am pretty sure I hadn’t seen one of those till now. It certainly is an ambitious film, and it should be in the wake of so many zombie related films out there. It has a pretty good hook, which sets it aside from the rest.
The film begins with a man named Mike (Michael McKiddy) waking up and finding there is a zombie attack in progress, however he doesn’t seem to notice that he himself is a zombie but a coherent one. He meets another coherent zombie Brent (Ross Kdder) and the pair decides to embark on a roadtrip to find Mike’s long lost love.

Deadheads is a zomedy in the vein of Shaun of the Dead, Aaah! Zombies!!, and A Little Bit Zombie. The film here is most remiscent of Shaun of the Dead in which two friends try to deal with the zombie apocalypse to moderate results. However in this film Mike (Michael McKiddy) and Brent (Ross Kidder) are not of the living. Instead, they are zombies released from a military lab'. The next 90 minutes is then a road trip styled film as the characters are pursued by the scientists. Deadheads blends genres along the way including: comedy, action and romance. Pandering to so many genres seems to weaken all of them, but overall this is a fun film for zombie movie fans.
Mike and Brent meet up with Cliff (Harry Burkey) after their escape. Cliff is burying the renowned prostitute Pei-Pei's ashes in Lake Michigan.

Directors/Writers: Brett and Drew Pierce.
Cast: Ross Kidder, Michael McKiddy and Markus Taylor.
The Deadheads is less about the horror of being undead and more about the relationships known back then and made now. When Mike Kellerman (Michael McKiddy) awakens to the unknown—and unaware he's technically a zombie of a new generation—the only help he's going to find is with Brent Guthrie (Ross Kidder), a drifter who's all about living life even though he’s dead too.
Part bro-rom-com and part adventure, this film quickly gets these two characters paired up for a look at what life is like for two outcasts. A part of what defines a horror film is retained, and that's to look deep into mankind's fears of acceptance within society.
Kellerman is an author, an individual who can hardly make ends meet, and he's in still in love with his high school sweetheart.

One flick we've been talking about a lot around here is the new zombie buddy comedy flick DeadHeads and with good reason, too. It looks like tons of fun. Apparently someone else thought so as the movie has finally found some Stateside distro.
From the Press Release:
Freestyle Digital Media has acquired the domestic rights to Deadheads, Best Horror Film Winner at the Traverse City Film Festival 2011 and Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking Winner at the Newport Beach Film Festival 2011. The film is slated for a domestic release in 1st quarter 2012.
Deadheads is a return to the great comedy/adventure films of the 80′s. The story follows two zombie slackers, Mike and Brent, who find themselves surprisingly reborn from the dead amid a disastrous zombie outbreak. After discovering an engagement ring in his coat pocket, Mike enlists his new found zombie pal, Brent, to embark on a quest in search of his lost love.

Deadheads
Directed by Brett Pierce, Drew T. Pierce
USA, 2011
The Pierce brothers have a strange brew in Deadheads. Zombie-comedy is an established genre at this point. The strangeness comes from the combining of bits of buddy comedy, teen movie, and road trip stuff they mix in; parts of Deadheads even feel like a Blink-182 music video, circa Enema of the State. For lurching corpses, zombies are pretty versatile.
This all works because Deadheads has a great premise. Mike (Michael McKiddy) wakes up in the middle of an undead outbreak and discovers two things. One, he’s a zombie. Two, he’s just not as much of a zombie as the other zombies. While they’re lurching, groaning, and gorging on flesh, he’s running, talking, and sick to his stomach. Enter Brent (Ross Kidder), a similarly dead but still talking goofball. The two aren’t quite zombies, but they aren’t human any more either.

The popularity of AMC's The Walking Dead series testifies to the longevity of this horror subgenre, with the success of Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland prompting more "zombedies." Both of these movies focus on the survival of unaffected individuals during a zombie apocalypse, but DeadHeads takes another road with the story of two zombies just trying to survive and fulfill unrequited love. Written, produced and directed by brothers Brett Pierce and Drew T. Pierce, DeadHeads pays homage to many of the classic zombie/undead films, especially Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead, for which their father Bart Pierce handled the photographic special effects.
DeadHeads centers around Mike Kellerman (Michael McKiddy), who awakens to find himself in a strange place. After escaping, he encounters and runs in fear from flesh-eating zombies. What Mike doesn't quite get is that he is also one of the "undead," as he is able to speak and think regularly.
