David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

After SAG-AFTRA leadership announced that the union would be going on strike, picketing began on Friday. In New York City and Los Angeles, actors have joined writers outside the studios, picketing and rallying outside of Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney, Amazon, NBCUniversal and others in both cities.
Corporate greed was at the center of messaging on day one of the joint picketing from SAG-AFTRA and the WGA.
When the bus carrying SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher and the rest of the negotiating committee arrived outside of Netflix’s LA offices, they were mobbed by media and fellow protesters as they inched their way down the sidewalk along Sunset Boulevard.
Drescher delivered a passionate speech at the Thursday press conference announcing the strike, and showed up to today’s protests equally ready to fight fire with fire. When asked by Variety Friday about Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recent comments about the strike,...

Nearly a week after Regis Philbin’s death, son-in-law and The Good Place creator Mike Schur memorialized the legendary TV host in an emotional Twitter thread.
Schur, married to Philbin’s daughter writer-producer J.J. Philbin, shared on Friday that he has had difficulty expressing the impact the beloved Who Wants to Be a Millionaire host’s career has had on the entertainment world.
“It’s too huge. You can’t wrap your arms around it. He literally holds the Guinness Book Record for most hours on TV,” the Emmy-winning TV producer and writer tweeted.
“For decades, Regis was always there, on TV, chatting and complaining and making people laugh. He needed no explanation,” Schur continued. He said that articulating the span and significance of Philbin’s career has been tough. But Memorabilia and old documents found in the late Hollywood star’s office do just the job, the producer said.

Michael Schur, the creator of “The Good Place” and co-creator of “Parks and Recreation” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” took to Twitter on Friday to pay tribute to television host and his father-in-law Regis Philbin, who died on July 24 at 88.
Not only did the two work in the same industry, but Schur has been married to Philbin’s daughter, J.J. Philbin, since 2005. In a lengthy thread, Schur — who goes by Ken Tremendous on Twitter — detailed the effect his father-in-law has had on his life.
“I’ve never really been able to articulate what his life and career meant. It’s too huge. You can’t wrap your arms around it. He literally holds the Guinness Book Record for most hours on TV.,” Schur wrote. “Luckily, I’ve never really *had* to articulate it, because most people just kind of get it. For decades, Regis was always there, on TV, chatting and complaining and making people laugh.

Regis Philbin’s veteran co-host Kathie Lee Gifford posted a moving tribute on Instagram after receiving news of Philbin’s passing.
Gifford wrote of her colleague, “there are no words to fully express the love I have for my precious friend, Regis. I simply adored him and every day with him was a gift. We spent 15 years together bantering and bickering and laughing ourselves silly—a tradition and a friendship we shared up to this very day. I smile knowing somewhere in Heaven, at this very moment, he’s making someone laugh. It brings me great comfort knowing that he had a personal relationship with his Lord that brought him great peace. I send all the love in my heart to Joy, to his children, to the rest of his family and to the innumerable people he touched over his legendary life. There has never been anyone like him. And there never will be.

ABC has canceled freshman drama Emergence and sophomore comedies Bless This Mess, Single Parents and Schooled as well as the new Kids Say The Darndest Things revival with Tiffany Haddish.
This cancelations are part of a big round of renewal decisions at the Disney-owned network today, which included the pickup of 13 current series for its 2020-21 slate.
While the cancellation of Emergence was considered likely, bubble comedies Single Parents, Bless This Mess and The Goldbergs’ spinoff Schooled all getting the axe was surprising, especially given the auspices involved. Two other ABC bubble shows, freshmen For Life and The Baker and the Beauty, remain in limbo.

Making half an hour of scripted, original television in the middle of a pandemic isn’t easy, but “Parks and Recreation” co-creator Mike Schur told press Tuesday that the current climate presented a “compelling reason” to create one more story for Leslie Knope and other beloved characters from the NBC series for the fundraising special that will air on Thursday.
At the heart of the reunion’s reason for being is the eternal optimism of Amy Poehler’s Knope, her belief that the incremental moments of connection were “vital to the social fabric,” as Schur puts it, and her faith in the government to be a force for good. The original show was forged in the economic crisis of 2007-2008, “when it was clear to Greg Daniels and me that government was going to be playing a very active role in people’s lives at the national level, the state level,...

In “Joust!”, the 21st episode of ABC’s freshman sitcom “Single Parents,” Will (Taran Killam) is rushing out of his house when he pauses to crack a joke. “Don’t steal anything,” he tells Angie, played by Leighton Meester. They both laugh — it’s a joke! — but then Will stops again at the door and repeats his request, sans frivolity. “Don’t steal anything,” he says.
“I’m going to steal some shit,” Meester told IndieWire when remembering the scene during a recent interview. “For some reason, that’s become an inside joke — that Angie’s a freaking klepto.”
What matters, though, is that Meester manages to build off that joke in just two seconds of screen time. As Will leaves, Angie turns toward the camera with an annoyed look on her face — as if to say, “How dare he think I’d steal from a friend!” — only to pivot...

Each year Variety’s New Leaders feature profiles the most prominent up-and-comers in the entertainment business. To determine this year’s worthies, Variety looked across disciplines, from television, digital, music and film, to law and finance, as well as content creators. They were proposed by their bosses and peers who have worked with them and seen their rise. All are age 40 or under, and Variety has measured them by the progress of their career trajectories: do they take calculated risks? How fast have they risen in their companies? Are they innovative and employ solutions to problems that are creative? As part of the salute to the qualities that keep the town humming, filmmaker/producer Travis Knight, who founded Laika Studios and is finishing up the anticipated “Bumblebee” for Paramount, as well as Variety‘s 10 Assistants to Watch along with the New Leaders will be recognized Oct. 17, at the Jeremy Hotel rooftop in West Hollywood.

Leighton Meester’s new role as a sharply-opinionated single mother in the ABC fall comedy “Single Parents” may seem like a departure for the one-time “Gossip Girl” star, but the actress said it’s a role that better reflects her current life and interests.
“I hadn’t been actively seeking [to play a mom], but I think it makes sense to me,” Meester, herself the mother of a young child, said in an interview with TheWrap. “Those roles, by their nature, are given the room to have a little bit more depth. … After having a kid, watching roles come in, I connect to those types of roles more now.”
Much like “New Girl,” co-creator Elizabeth Meriwether and J.J. Philbin’s last project, “Single Parents” revolves around a group of oddballs — in this case, solo parents of elementary school-aged kids. The pack of misfits develop a borderline co-dependent friendship out of proximity and necessity.

The affable “Single Parents” pilot plays out a lot like co-creator Elizabeth Meriwether’s last TV pilot — the Fox hit, “New Girl,” which ended earlier this year. There’s a lone weirdo in trouble, a group of friends who are hesitant to help, and, somewhat inexplicably, the group rallies around the outsider just as their personal crisis peaks.
In “New Girl,” said weirdo is Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel), a grade school teacher spinning out after a bad breakup with her boyfriend. Looking for a new home, she sits down for an interview with three dudes who need a roommate. For those who forgot, Jess pitches herself as a bit of an emotional wreck who sings to herself and watches “Dirty Dancing” on repeat — you know, the ideal roommate. Nevertheless, the guys accept her and even come together at episode’s end to save her from a terrible date.

In superficial terms, not much unites the shaggy group at the center of “Single Parents.” Angie (Leighton Meester) is a stressed out paralegal; Douglas (Brad Garrett) is a surly country club Republican; Poppy (Kimrie Lewis) is a frank sommelier; Miggy (Jake Choi) is a 20-year-old probable DJ. But by the time Will (Taran Killam) and his daughter join their school district, they’ve formed a single parent supergroup forged by their shared bonds of frustration and exhaustion. With heavy disdain for the chipper couples surrounding them, they share babysitting duties and horror stories with each other to keep themselves sane and upright as best they can.
The pilot of “Single Parents” — written by “New Girl’s” Liz Meriwether and J.J. Philbin — doesn’t try too hard to justify their friendship beyond that, which can be a little disorienting with so many disparate characters to juggle. It’s hard not to wonder,...

ABC scheduled only an afternoon at TCA, bailing on having an executive panel because, a network rep said on stage, they had an earnings report coming out today and “thought it best not to have an executive session compete.”
Instead, ABC’s first panel, Single Parents competed with news creator Liz Meriwether had extended her overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV for another year.
Meriwether created, wrote and executive produced all seven seasons of Fox’s New Girl, which has been one of 20th Century Fox TV’s most successful comedy series of the past decade with a lucrative Svod deal. She also co-created with Lake Bell 20th Century Fox TV-produced off-cycle Fox pilot Bless This Mess, which has been heating up for midseason consideration.
The extension keeps Meriwether in the 20th TV fold as the company transitions from 21st Century Fox to ABC parent Disney as part of the pending mega acquisition.

The 2018 pilot season is shaping up to be a landmark year for women behind the camera.
Female creators and directors saw gains virtually across the board, as networks ramp up efforts to include more women in the pilot process. As Variety previously reported, the Time’s Up and Me Too movements have played important roles this season, with the networks all looking for ways to increase female representation.
According to multiple TV literary agents who spoke with Variety, there was a clear shift within the networks this year to increase the number of women behind the camera, particularly in the director’s chair. One source also noted that the studios exerted “immense pressure” to increase the number of female directors this season.
ABC has 13 female creators on 9 of their 23 pilots this year, up from 9 creators in 2017. Of those, five are comedies, including originals from Liz Meriwether and J.J. Philbin, Diablo Cody,...

That Chris Pratt is the star of one of the biggest movies of the year (two, really, even if people didn't specifically see "The Lego Movie" for him) is perhaps surprising to filmgoers who didn't know him at all (or only knew him from supporting roles in films like "Moneyball" or "Zero Dark Thirty"). But it's almost certainly not surprising to TV fans who watched him grow up from the unexpected heart of "Everwood" as sensitive jock Bright Abbott, to a scene stealer on "The O.C." as rich kid revolutionary Che, through his current role as man-child musician Andy Dwyer on "Parks and Recreation" — three roles that, together, showed off the range, charisma and impeccable comic timing that he brought to the role of Star-Lord. And it is absolutely not a shock to the people he worked for on those shows. As "Guardians of the Galaxy" prepared for its second...

Will Ferrell pitched a sitcom about astronauts with the “tone of Anchorman” that got picked up for a pilot by NBC.
Will Ferrell To Play Astronaut On TV
