The British prime minister and leader of the U.K. Conservative Party, Rishi Sunak, has officially called a general election in what is set to be a historical year for global politics.
Britons will take to the polls on Thursday, July 4 after ministers had been assured a summer election will not take place. But off the back of good economic news for Sunak’s government as they hit a tricky inflation target, senior politicians frantically changed schedules to capitalize on the welcomed development.
“I have never been prouder to be British,” Sunak began in his statement outside London’s Downing Street on Wednesday afternoon. “I recognize that it has not always been easy. Some of you will only just be feeling the benefits (of inflation coming down)… Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future. Earlier today, I spoke to His Majesty the King to request a dissolution of Parliament.

By May 1945, Nazi Germany had surrendered the Second World War in Europe leaving only the fighting in the Pacific remaining. After threats from the USA, the UK and China to the Japanese of ‘utter destruction’, the Americans finally dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The combined death toll has been estimated up to a 250,000 people.
On March 1st 1954, a Japanese fishing boat called Daigo Fukuryu Maru (Lucky Dragon 5) was searching for tuna near the shores of a small ring of coral reef called Bikini Atoll near the Marshall Islands. After their haul, they returned to the port in Yaizu, Japan all suffering from headaches, nausea and bleeding from their gums and eyes. It was immediately clear what had happened to them – they all had radiation poisoning from the fallout of American atomic bomb testing.

The weak and the wounded rest on slabs of broken concrete in the fading sun. Around them, others are sifting through the rubble while armed soldiers train their vigilant eyes on any signs of danger. Godzilla has been here and this writer has been tasked to track his movements, get a good look at the creature and report back with my findings. This outdoor scene of carnage - a piece of smoldering, destroyed building littered with civilians and soldiers - speaks volumes about Godzilla’s strength. I’m told Godzilla is massive. Production designer Owen Paterson (of The Matrix trilogy) says he’s nearly 400 feet tall, bigger than any incarnation of Godzilla yet.

9.00am: It's a big day for Europe. Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy are meeting to thrash out details of a plan that could set up a fiscal union in Europe and may (or may not) lead to some sort of resolution of the debt crisis. But this blog - like the UK - is sitting on the sidelines. My colleague Alex Hawkes will be covering the Merkozy meeting on the business live blog. And I'll be covering events at Westminster, where the most lively before 4pm will be Leveson - The Sequel, a star-studded committee hearing featuring Hugh Grant, Steve Coogan and Max Mosley who may well spend an hour telling MPs and peers exactly what they told Leveson.
Here's the diary for the day.

With the inaugural Australian Production Design Guild Awards this month, Joanne Whitehead speaks with a selection of Australia’s leading production designers about the state of their sector in the industry.
While we so often hear the tired ‘it’s an honour just to be nominated’, during the awards season, for Australian production designers, the ceremony itself will feel like a reward, as their achievements are finally recognised on September 21, when the Australian Production Design Guild (Apdg) will hold their inaugural awards.
Though associations like Apdg existed in other countries before, the Australian guild is relatively new, created in 2009 by founding members Michael Scott Mitchell, Steven Jones Evans, George Liddle, Catherine Martin, Ian Gracie, Colin Gibson and Owen Paterson. With the awards approaching, it felt appropriate to delve a little further into the often misunderstood role of a production designer.

Nothing can spot Green Hornet now! Ok, there’s actually probably tons of things that could continue to interfere with this production going smoothly. The day that many thought might never come has finally arrived. "The Green Hornet," for all the roadblocks and pitfalls it experienced along the way, has begun production.
According to an announcement by Columbia Pictures, the Michel Gondry-directed, Seth Rogen-starring film has officially started production in Los Angeles, California.
The release date's change to December 17, 2010 is also confirmed by the press release, and while several long-rumored casting notes are also verified, there are some new additions as well.
As previously reported, Jay Chou has joined the cast as Kato and Cameron Diaz is also on board as Rogen's love interest. It also seems that Edward James Olmos's off-the-cuff remark about starring in "The Green Hornet" has panned out, as his name is listed amongst the credited actors.
Nicolas Cage, however, is only mentioned as being in negotiations for the movie—meaning his involvement isn't quite as set in stone as once believed.

Film Review: 'Red Planet'
Earthbound 'Red Planet' / Sci-fi thriller's eye-catching look can't
overcome clumsy script, thin characters
By Kirk Honeycutt
About all that survives in Warner Bros.' "Red Planet" is a sturdy turn by Carrie-Anne Moss as the movie's hero and arresting cinematography and production design by Peter Suschitzky and Owen Paterson, respectively, that give the planet a burnished, almost monochromatic look.
While Brian De Palma's "Mission to Mars" labored exhaustively to achieve an unstable mix of mysticism and studied realism, "Red Planet" crash-lands in a desert of one-note characters, banal dialogue and a general lack of excitement or tension. Mars apparently is not the planet on which to find a good script. Pluto anyone?
Few science-fiction movies in the past quarter-century have given off fewer sparks than "Red Planet". The film may concern the first manned expedition to Mars, but everyone appears to be going through the motions. Under the direction of tyro director Antony Hoffman, most of the performances contain a singular lack of energy. And plot turns in a script by Chuck Pfarrer and Jonathan Lemkin get telegraphed long before they arrive.
The year is 2050. Earth is dying because of massive pollution and global warming. A desperate humankind attempts to "terraform" Mars into a hospitable, oxygen-rich environment by seeding the planet with algae. But that project has gone awry, so Moss commands a scientific mission to the planet to figure out what went wrong and repair it.
Aboard are Val Kilmer, an all-purpose handyman; Tom Sizemore, a gregarious scientific analyst; Terence Stamp, the ship's spiritual guru; Benjamin Bratt, a moody and intense Air Force captain; and Simon Baker, a "last-minute replacement" who may not be cut out for space adventure.
The first 20 minutes are taken up with poorly scripted scenes of chitchat replete with flat dialogue and special "moments" between actors -- meant to establish characters and relationships -- that only emphasize their sheer superficiality. Especially annoying is an encounter between Kilmer and Moss, who has just stepped naked from a shower, that is designed to set up sexual electricity between the two.
Suddenly, everything goes haywire. A solar flare cripples the mother ship. Moss dispatches the others aboard an emergency shuttle to the surface of Mars while she stays behind to fix the ship. Then the shuttle crash-lands -- just isn't their day, is it? -- and Stamp sustains life-threatening injuries.
The crash also causes an exploration robot built something like a mechanical greyhound -- a creature we in the audience don't trust from the moment it comes onscreen -- to malfunction and turn its guerrilla-warfare tactics against the banged-up crew.
The beleaguered astronauts must now trudge around the barren landscape, meeting one obstacle or setback after another, while Moss putters in the ship, conversing occasionally with its mechanical navigator, named Lucille, a benevolent version of HAL from "2001". All these incidents and the solution to the disappearance of the seeded algae are pedestrian, to say the least. And no matter how many showers or revealing slips Moss slides into, it's hard to work up much excitement over the fate of these individuals.
The film is technically adroit. The spaceship and Martian surface have the true grit one imagines space travel a half-century from now might be like.

Film review: 'Noriega: God's Favorite'
An amazing movie about the downfall of scrappy Panamanian strongman Manuel "Tony" Noriega, "Noriega: God's Favorite" looked great on the big screen of the Granada Theatre, where the Roger Spottiswoode-directed film premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Alas, despite its availability to distributors, the less than-$6
million production has not landed a theatrical deal. It is set to air April 2 on Showtime.
Although more festival showcases are certainly in order, most of the intended mature audience will discover the project's many virtues over time through cable play dates and a long ancillary shelf life. Written by journalist and nonfiction author Lawrence Wright, adapting his just-published debut novel "God's Favorite", "Noriega" stars Bob Hoskins in another superb performance -- arguably his greatest yet -- with a well-picked supporting cast of veterans and relatively unfamiliar faces.
Starting with the torture and murder of Noriega's well-known foe Hugo Spadafora in 1985 and climaxing with the general's seeking shelter from American soldiers and outraged Panamanians inside the Vatican Embassy, "Noriega" is a wild tale that many potential viewers are probably not fully acquainted with.
The filmmakers and Wright make no promises of accuracy on every detail, conversation, date or even names and faces. But in the tradition of art "re-imagining" reality, "Noriega" is a major success, bringing to a potentially wide audience a film that is literate, challenging, even a tad controversial in its occasionally sympathetic portrayal of the "Little General".
Intricately constructed around the spiritual and international crisis Noriega confronts when the invasion of 1989 ends his corrupt career -- using a fictional confession to periodically provide insights into the protagonist's complex mind -- "Noriega" is intelligently lurid, unabashedly funny and sickeningly violent.
It holds too many oddities and subtle storytelling flourishes to begin to do justice to a one-of-a-kind experience that, for example, features a sunny scene on a boat with Gen. Tony, a bevy of topless girls and Oliver North (Edward Edwards) talking about their troubles with Contras and Colombians.
Or, if that's not wicked enough, there's the scene where tough chit-chatting Fidel Castro (Michael Sorich) sticks Tony with the bill at an intimate summit in a Havana nightclub.
An alcoholic despot whose primary beliefs are "forget the past" and that God has given him extraordinary luck, Tony is a big, bad, bisexual barrio boy turned "tin-pot fascist," with a sultry mistress (Rosa Blasi), a witch doctor, loyal second in command Roberto (Tony Plana), who "knows too much," and, last but not least, a jealous wife (Denise Blasor).
After the Spadafora affair, Noriega drives Panamanian President Nicky Balretta (Luis Avalos) to resign and also banishes Roberto, while making a big show of holding elections. As the forces of betrayed drug lords, American intelligence and military and his own internal critics close in, Noriega brutally overturns the results of the election and stops a coup by Roberto's replacement (Nestor Carbonell) in its tracks with a well-placed phone call and his own fierce personality -- a tremendous sequence that Hoskins pulls off spectacularly.
With an excellent soundtrack of Latin-flavored songs and instrumentals, the well-paced, entirely absorbing scenario concludes with Noriega and a savvy papal nuncio (Jeffrey Demunn) enduring the U.S. military's barrage of hard-rock music in a bizarre standoff.
And Tony's story is not over yet, we learn in the finale. Convicted of racketeering and drug trafficking and serving a 30-year sentence in federal prison in Miami, Noriega is eligible for parole this year.
Filmed in the Philippines, the production is first-rate in all regards. Pierre Mignot's cinematography, Owen Paterson's production design and Florence-Isabelle Megginson's costumes work together magically to help fully realize the perceptive, at times playful, cinematic ministerings of Spottiswoode ("Tomorrow Never Dies", Showtime's "Hiroshima").
