It is almost like a Shakespearean drama with a lot of cool action,” says two-time Oscar-winning film editor Pietro Scalia of Michael Mann’s new Ferrari, which is based on the biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine and explores the life of the eponymous automaker (played by Adam Driver) as he struggles personally and professionally in 1957.
In his first pairing with the director, Scalia — who won his Oscars for JFK (shared with Joe Hutshing) and Black Hawk Down — emphasizes that while thrilling race scenes were created, Mann’s focus was first on character and key relationships, like those between Enzo and Laura (Enzo’s wife, portrayed by Penélope Cruz) and Enzo and Lena (his lover, portrayed by Shailene Woodley). “I remember that he loved to see the contrast between how Driver would play his character in front of Laura or with his mother or with Lena,...

The nominees list for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Board of Governors has been revealed before its June 6-10 balloting.
The candidates are hoping to fill the open seats on the 54-member board. Up to four candidates are set for the open seat at each each branch, which carries three governors with staggered terms per branch.
Board members who have termed out include Academy president David Rubin (from the casting directors branch), Jan Pascale (production designers), Mark Johnson (producers) and Nancy Utley (PR).
Candidates vying for a seat include actress Marlee Matlin, composer Hans Zimmer, and executive Toby Emmerich.
The slate faces some crucial tests once installed, including selecting a new Academy president and new CEO to replace outgoing Dawn Hudson. The Academy also must overcome perceptions created in a rocky year, with its Will Smith Oscars slap incident and the uproar over what categories would make it into the Oscars broadcast.

Karol Urban has been elected president of the Cinema Audio Society, succeeding Mark Ulano, who has been termed out after four years. Urban, a veteran re-recording mixer, is only the second female president in the organization’s 55-year history, and the first since 2002.
The Cas, whose membership is 95% male, was founded in 1964 to advance the specialized field of cinematic sound recording and to achieve recognition for its members.
“I am so incredibly honored to have garnered the confidence of our esteemed members,” Urban said. “After years of serving under different presidents and managing the content for the Cas Quarterly, I have learned so much about the achievements, interests, talents and concerns of our membership. I am excited to be given this new platform to celebrate the achievements and herald new opportunities to serve this incredibly dynamic and talented community.”
Urban joined Cas in 2008 and began contributing articles for the Cas quarterly magazine.

The Cinema Audio Society Awards nominees for Best Sound Mixing are: “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “First Man,” “A Quiet Place” and “A Star is Born.” Historically, only about two-thirds of the Csa nominees go on to contend at the Oscars. However, we are predicting that all five of this year’s guild nominees will go on to reap Oscar bids for Best Sound Mixing. “A Star is Born” is our overwhelming frontrunner to win both awards.

Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, and A Star Is Born have been nominated by the Cinema Audio Society, which announced its nominees for the 55th Annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing on Tuesday.
The nomination marks the eighth nod for A Star Is Born from a Hollywood guild or professional society. The Bradley Cooper drama fared poorly at the Golden Globes on Sunday, but it is the only film to receive nominations from the Producers Guild, Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild, Art Directors Guild, American Society of Cinematographers, American Cinema Editors, Casting Society of America and now Cinema Audio Society.

Oscar-winning production sound mixer Lee Orloff is set to receive the Cinema Audio Society’s 2019 Career Achievement Award. He will be celebrated during the 55th Cas Awards on February 16 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown hotel.
Orloff launched his sound-mixing career with 1984’s Blood Simple, the first film from Joel and Ethan Coen. A half-decade later he would grab the first of seven career Oscar noms for The Abyss, which began a three-film collaboration with James Cameron that also included the 1991 smash Terminator 2: Judgment Day — for which Orloff scored an Academy Award — and 1994’s True Lies.
He went on to nab sound-mixing Oscar noms for each of the first two Pirates of the Caribbean films and also mixed the next two. Along the way he also landed Best Sound Oscar noms for Geronimo: An American Legend (1993), The Insider (1999) and The Patriot (2000). Orloff’s resume of 80-plus titles also includes such features as Blade,...

'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,...

'JFK' movie with Kevin Costner as Jim Garrison 'JFK' assassination movie: Gripping political drama gives added meaning to 'Rewriting History' If it's an Oliver Stone film, it must be bombastic, sentimental, clunky, and controversial. With the exception of "clunky," JFK is all of the above. It is also riveting, earnest, dishonest, moving, irritating, paranoid, and, more frequently than one might expect, outright brilliant. In sum, Oliver Stone's 1991 political thriller about a determined district attorney's investigation of the assassination of U.S. president John F. Kennedy is a slick piece of propaganda that mostly works both dramatically and cinematically. If only some of the facts hadn't gotten trampled on the way to film illustriousness. With the exception of John Williams' overemphatic score – Oliver Stone films need anything but overemphasis – JFK's technical and artistic details are put in place to extraordinary effect. Joe Hutshing and Pietro Scalia's editing...

'The Insider' movie: Al Pacino and Russell Crowe 'The Insider' movie: 1999 exposé of CBS news show barks, but doesn't bite Michael Mann's 1999 movie The Insider quote exchange: "It's old news. ... We'll be ok," says Don Hewitt (Philip Baker Hall), the creator of the CBS news show 60 Minutes. "These things have a half-life of 15 minutes." "No, that's fame," replies 60 Minutes anchor Mike Wallace (Christopher Plummer). "Fame has a 15-minute half-life. Infamy lasts a little longer." The infamous "things" referred to by Hewitt and Wallace are the series of scandals that erupted in early 1996, when it was revealed that CBS had refused to air an interview with a tobacco company whistleblower because the network feared the (financial) consequences. What Freedom of the Press? Based on Marie Brenner's Vanity Fair article about the events that led up to that embarrassing – and disturbing – incident, The Insider tells the story of scientist Jeffrey Wigand...

Nearly three decades ago, two young Minnesotans named Joel and Ethan Coen went down to Texas to shoot a film called "Blood Simple." It was their first feature. And to use a cliché, "the rest is history." But they were not the only artists making their debuts on that film who would later go on to become staples in the American film industry. Actress Frances McDormand, sound designer Lee Orloff, cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld, composer Carter Burwell, sound editor Skip Lievsay and boom operator Peter Kurland also cut their teeth on "Blood Simple." Lievsay, now sound re-recording mixer and supervising sound editor,...

I guess I could look at the win last night from the American Cinema Editors (Ace) for The Descendants for Best Editing in a dramatic feature as a sign we may still have an upset at the Oscars, but I think that would be overstepping my bounds. I will, however, say I think it shows The Descendants is a stronger #2 candidate for Best Picture than Hugo is as The Artist remains the clear front-runner in the Best Picture category as it also won last night for Best Editing in a comedy or musical. In the lackluster animation category Rango took the win over Puss in Boots and The Adventures of Tintin where, I guess, we could have seen Tintin win, but I'm having a hard time mustering up any kind of passion one way or another to really care. The Ace winners are listed below along with the other nominees.

2012 Oscar Predictions: Sound Mixing Contenders as the Cinema Audio Society Announces their Nominees
Two categories I have yet to predict in my Oscar predictions are Best Sound Editing and Sound Mixing, primarily because I've been waiting for the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) and Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) to weigh in with their nominees. Today, the Cas delivered and I'm expecting the results from the Mpse today or tomorrow as we are now only a few days away from the Oscar nominations. As for the Cas noms, over the last five years there has been a pretty good track record of the nominees matching Oscar's nominees. From 2006-2009 the nominees matched four out of the five Oscar nominees. Last year, however, was a bit different as only two of the five nominees matched. This year, I'm aiming for four of the five nominees to match once again as my only difference is I have Transformers: Dark of the Moon in my top five over Moneyball.
