2024 was a quiet year for comic book movies, though Marvel, DC, and the wider comic book sphere still managed to provide audiences with some stellar moments. Despite a lower number of releases, Marvel had a solid year in terms of its box office, with Deadpool & Wolverine gaining over $1.3 billion worldwide, delivering a win for the MCU. DC didn't see similar success with Joker: Folie à Deux, and Sony had two flops between Madame Web and Kraven The Hunter's box office results and reviews - though Venom: The Last Dance fared much better, despite mixed reviews.
Still, every film has value, even if it may be harder to find. Deadpool & Wolverine had many of 2024's best comic book movie moments, thanks to a hilarious script that delivered excellent cameos, meta references, and action scenes that audiences were begging for. Although Elvis Presley was Lisa Marie Presley’s father, he was also her favorite performer. She loved watching him on stage and recording the songs that have since become industry classics. However, Lisa Marie had her favorite Elvis songs. She always asked him to perform these two classic tunes from his extensive catalog.
Lisa Marie Presley’s two favorite Elvis Presley songs were soulful classics
Elvis Presley’s music catalog consisted of hundreds of songs. With so many to pick from, Lisa Marie Presley narrowed her choices to two.
Lisa Marie’s daughter, Riley Keough, shared her mom’s choices in her late mother’s soon-to-be-released autobiography, From Here to the Great Unknown. People Magazine published an excerpt.
“I had certain songs that I liked; “Hurt” and “How Great Thou Art.” I would ask him to sing those songs for me, and he would always say yes,” Lisa Marie revealed.

Needle-drop music cues have been a hallmark of the "Deadpool" franchise stretching back to the opening credits of the first film, which kicks off with an amusingly chaotic freeze-frame action sequence set to Juice Newton's cover of "Angel of the Morning." This was a strong statement of irreverent purpose, and a signal to the audience that the artists behind this big-screen take on Marvel Comics' had a mile-wide sentimental streak.
The one constant through all three films has been the trio of star Ryan Reynolds and screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. After the travestying of the Merc with a Mouth in 20th Century Fox's botched "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," these gentlemen have worked overtime to deliver a version of Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza's character that respects the fans who keep this superhero movie train chugging. Constructing a soundtrack album is a gentle -- and perhaps lost -- art. This author is old enough to remember the 1990s heyday of movie soundtracks, when film producers would regularly license charting pop hits, obscure deep cuts, upcoming rappers, and underappreciated indie bands to construct carefully curated and meticulously produced albums that lived happily in your friends' cars all summer. There was a time when an unsuccessful film could recoup a lot of its theatrical losses with overwhelming soundtrack record sales. See: "Dead Man on Campus."
As the music industry collapsed in the early 2000s, however, soundtrack records fell out of favor. Movie songs became mere playlists, neither arranged on a CD in any cogent order nor lending themselves toward a general thematic thrust. We '90s teens can now whine (as is our wont) that soundtrack albums are, in the '20s, rarely more than "pile of neat songs.

Elvis Presley inspired more country songs than you can shake a pair of blue suede shoes at. One of the more famous ones is Patty Loveless’ “I Try to Think About Elvis.” The track was initially more masculine. Here’s why it got changed.
Patty Loveless’ ‘I Try to Think About Elvis’ was originally about handguns and red meat
While Loveless brought “I Try to Think About Elvis” to life with her vocals, she had nothing to do with its writing. “I Try to Think About Elvis” was written by Gary Burr. Burr is also known for writing country classics like Juice Newton’s “Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me” and Tim McGraw’s “Can’t Be Really Gone.”
During a 1995 interview with American Songwriter, Burr discussed how “I Try to Think About Elvis” evolved. “I had to rewrite ‘Elvis’ because it was a very testosterone-driven song,...

While it sounds like a lot of country songs, Blake Shelton’s “God Gave Me You” has some unusual lyrics. The rock singer who wrote the song gave fans insight into his lyricism. Shelton also discussed what he thought when he first heard the track on the radio.
The writer of Blake Shelton’s ‘God Gave Me You’ likes the track’s line about martyrdom
Christian rock singer Dave Barnes wrote and recorded the original version of “God Gave Me You.” During a 2012 interview with American Songwriter, Barnes was asked about the writing of “God Gave Me You.”
“It didn’t take long at all to write,” he said. “I really do think I wrote it in an afternoon. Those are the nice ones, where a melody and lyric idea match up perfectly. It was quick.”

“Reptile” opens on the plaintive notes of Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning” wafting through a sequence in which realtor couple Will (Justin Timberlake) and Summer (Matilda Lutz) prep a lavish property for a showing. It then splits to Will presenting to a conference as Summer hangs out in a gym’s locker room. Newton’s tune stutters and stops. These mundane moments with an oddball soundtrack are meant to create early suspense: Summer will eventually be murdered in a vacant property. And Will is the prime suspect.
And yet, “Reptile,” the directorial feature from Grant Singer — a music video director known for his collaborations with The Weeknd and Taylor Swift — isn’t really about Summer or Will. It concerns Detective Tom Nichols.

2016's "Deadpool" was ridiculous, silly, juvenile, and more fun than you can stuff in a unicorn piñata. I could certainly be talking about the actual film here, but at the moment, I'm giggling over the opening credits. Set to Juice Newton's "Angel of the Morning," the slow-motion battle that leads into the opening car chase is a riot of irreverence with silly names and jokes and Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) giving someone a slo-mo wedgie, all the while being made fun of by the title cards. I don't know about you, but I'd like all comedy opening credits to be like this.
As it turns out, the names given to the cast and crew in the "Deadpool" credits weren't supposed to make it into the actual film. They were placeholders, as was revealed during a panel at 2016's Silicon Valley Comic Con (via ComicBook.com) featuring Franck Balson, the layout director...

With the recent release of Rihanna's newest track for the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, many film fans on Reddit have begun to discuss their favorite (and least favorite) uses of music in iconic movies over the years.
A film's soundtrack can often make or break the experience for most audiences, and if the music doesn't fit the tone of the story, it can often be a jarring experience that distracts from its true purpose. Reddit users have offered several examples of movies where the distracting music ruined the experience for them - for several different reasons.

Warning: Spoilers for The Simpsons season 34, episode 5.
While The Simpsons devoted a whole episode to parodying Stephen King’s It, one of the outing’s funniest moments came from spoofing the movie’s 2019 sequel It: Chapter 2. The blockbuster adaptations of Stephen King’s 1986 doorstopper It were massive financial successes, but both movies had their faults. In particular, It: Chapter 2’s tone was inconsistent, something that The Simpsons touched on when the show’s Treehouse of Horror Halloween special series spoofed the sequel.
In The Simpsons' “Not It,”, the long-running cartoon comedy devoted an entire episode to spoofing Stephen King's It and It: Chapter 2. The second Simpsons season 34 episode to focus on Krusty, “Not It” saw the character play Krusto the Clown, a malevolent entity based on It’s Pennywise. Krusto appeared to Moe, Marge, Carl, Homer, and Comic Book Guy, taking on a different creepy guise each time. However,...

Four of the five contenders in the editing race this year are newcomers, with only Alan Baumgarten (“The Trial of Chicago 7”), who snared an Oscar nom for 2013’s “American Hustle,” being recognized previously by the Academy.
“The Father” might have landed six nominations including best picture, but to land a win here it would need to beat frontrunners “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
However, historically, to be considered the Oscar frontrunner for best picture, you need to land picture, director, original or adapted screenplay, editing and acting nominations. There are only two films that check that: “Nomadland” and “Promising Young Woman.”
Confused? This is where Oscar watchers will need to be following what Ace Eddies pick come April 17.
The Ace Eddies track record for guiding who wins the editor prize on Oscar night stands at 89%. It also is a solid guide to predicting best picture.

Frédéric Thoraval had a difficult task ahead of him as the editor on “Promising Young Woman.” The film, about a young woman named Cassie (Carey Mulligan) who seeks vengeance after a traumatic event that happened years ago to her best friend, balances many tones including dark satire, thriller, horror and even rom-com. But the editor credits writer-director Emerald Fennell‘s script for crafting an emotional through-line to keep the film feeling of a piece. “We had a very clear path to follow,” says Thoroval in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “I think very quickly in the cut, there was one thing that was obvious: we needed to keep an emotional connection with the character of Cassie.” Watch the full interview above.
What also helped Thoraval greatly was Mulligan’s concentrated performance. Like Thoraval, Mulligan was focused on bringing out the core of Cassie, even through the very different...

First of all, for the love of God, do not read this story or watch the video unless you’ve seen Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman.” Just stop now — unless, of course, you love spoilers, in which case… go forth.
In “Promising Young Woman,” Carey Mulligan plays Cassie, whose childhood best friend, Nina, was raped during a raucous party in medical school. While we never find out exactly what happened afterward, what emerges is that Nina dropped out of school after a sham investigation — and so did Cassie, in order to take care of her. We also know that Nina is dead.
At some point before the movie’s action starts, Cassie began devoting herself to avenging Nina. She goes to bars and acts wasted, and inevitably a man picks her up in order to, he tells himself and possibly his bros, get her home safely. When he, again inevitably,...

Emerald Fennell’s directorial debut Promising Young Woman could have easily been your classic revenge fantasy thriller, with its tale of Cassie, a grief-stricken, silently enraged woman on a mission to expose every last sexual predator in town. Only it’s so much more. Styled like an entrancing ’90s romcom, it wrongfoots the viewer at every turn with its fluffy-sweatered, heart-printed world, punctuated by cupcakes and pop songs. With Carey Mulligan’s blood-curdlingly underplayed performance as Cassie, Fennell leads us down a deceptively pretty garden path to the real truth about sexual assault and society’s turning of the other cheek, in a journey so twisty we never see its end coming. Antonia Blyth meets Fennell and Mulligan to find out how they disguised a truly thought-provoking shocker as a pretty pink love story.

In the early '80s, MTV hadn't begun airing black artists in regular video rotation. Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and subsequent Thriller videos helped to change that, but in 1983 it was a pretty steady stream of Pat Benatar, Air Supply, Juice Newton, and the like. During an on-air interview with original VJ Mark Goodman, the legendary David Bowie -- who passed away at age 69 after a battle with cancer -- wondered aloud why the network's preferences were so blatantly white. "David Bowie: “Why are there practically no blacks on the network?” Mark Goodman: “We seem to be doing music that fits into what we want to play on MTV. The company is thinking in terms of narrowcasting.” David Bowie: “There seem to be a lot of black artists making very good videos that I’m surprised aren’t being used on MTV.” Mark Goodman: “We...
