Director John Crowley’s romantic drama We Live in Time, which has a poster that has inspired many memes and stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, is said to be “breaking hearts on the fall film festival circuit” and will be receiving a limited theatrical release in the US on October 11th, with a UK release to follow on January 1st and a Spanish release set for January 3rd. While we wait for these We Live in Time release dates to come around, Crowley has already signed on to direct his next film. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Crowley will be directing a psychological thriller called Five, which is being produced by the team behind The Menu (you can read our 9/10 review of that thriller at This Link).

Like a Bansky of the crypto world, little is known about Satoshi Nakamoto, the reputed creator of the digital currency Bitcoin. What’s his real name? What’s he worth? Who is he, really?

The film executive produced by Adam McKay will debut on HBO on Tuesday, October 8, and will be available to stream on Max. Watch the trailer below.

"If you dig deep enough, the inconsistencies will emerge." HBO has revealed the trailer for a documentary film titled Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, another investigative look at Bitcoin and the world of cryptocurrency. This would play well as a double feature with Alex Winter's excellent doc Trust Machine: The Story of Blockchain a few years back. "In the future of money, who holds the power?" Indeed. In Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, intrepid filmmaker Cullen Hoback dives into the origins of Bitcoin and the identity of its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The captivating new doc film offers a thrilling, globe-spanning investigation, with Hoback immersing himself with key players, uncovering never-before-seen clues, and humorously unraveling Bitcoin's meteoric rise. It's executive produced by Adam McKay (director of The Big Short), Todd Schulman, Cullen Hoback, and Taylor Jones. And it'll be streaming on Max later this month. I'm always fascinated by these kind of investigations,...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill on Sunday that sought to ward off catastrophic risks of highly advanced artificial intelligence models.
The bill, Sb 1047, was the most controversial AI bill of the legislative session, with dozens of activists and AI companies lining up on either side. The authors warned that if left unregulated, AI models could be used to develop chemical or nuclear weapons, which could lead to mass casualties. Opponents argued that heavy-handed regulation would strangle the development of AI, and force AI companies to leave the state.
In a veto message, Newsom said the bill is addressing a genuine problem, but does does not establish the right regulatory framework.
“I do not believe this is the best approach to protecting the public from real threats posed by the technology,” he wrote. “Ultimately, any framework for effectively regulating Al needs to keep pace with the technology itself.”

Before Kathryn Hahn went mainstream in 2021 for her portrayal of Agatha Harkness in Disney+’s WandaVision, she was known for starring in many comedy films. Interestingly, one of her previous works did not appeal to her son.

Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha All Along has just dropped its first two episodes on Disney+. Hahn returns to her role as Agatha Harkness, the villain that she played to perfection in Elizabeth Olsen’s WandaVision. While fans were initially excited to see her back, the further updates about the series and Marvel’s fall from grace in the intervening years have been bad news for Agatha.

However, fans who want more of Hahn’s performance can root for another sequel starring the actress. Hahn played the s*x-crazed wife in the 2008 comedy flick, Step Brothers. While a sequel for the film has been in the air since its release, fans never got one. But it might not be too late for an entertaining sequel from that IP.

‘Mickey 17’ Trailer: Robert Pattinson Keeps Getting Killed in Bong Joon Ho’s Follow-Up to ‘Parasite’
Robert Pattinson hates dying, especially after kicking the bucket 17-plus times for Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi-novel adaptation “Mickey 17.”
The feature, which marks writer/director Bong’s long-awaited follow-up to his Best Picture-winning “Parasite,” centers on Pattinson’s title character Mickey, who is a disposable employee called an Expendable. Mickey is sent on a human expedition sent to colonize ice world Niflheim; any mission that is considered too dangerous for humans is a task for Mickey. And of course, there are more than a few Mickey-related fatalities.
Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and “Blink Twice” breakout Naomi Ackie also star.
Bong adapted Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7” but added more deaths for the lead character. The film project was first announced in January 2022, which came before the novel’s release in February via Macmillan imprint St. Martin. The film was originally set for a March 29, 2024 release before being...

The 71st Primetime Emmys were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 22nd, 2019. While it was a big night for shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Fleabag,” and “Chernobyl” in their respective genre fields, there were a fair amount of surprises that the Gold Derby odds didn’t predict. Perhaps the biggest shock of the night was Jason Bateman winning Best Drama Directing for “Ozark’s” season two premiere, “Reparations.” How was he able to overcome his sixth place odds and win his first Emmy for directing?
When the nominations were announced on July 16th, 2019, “Game of Thrones” led the drama field with 32 bids for its eighth and final season. It was followed by “Better Call Saul,” “Killing Eve,” “Ozark” and “This Is Us,” all earning 9 noms each. “Game of Thrones” was touted to handily win its fourth Drama Series Emmy as well as its third for directing.

HBO has picked up to series The Chair Company, its half-hour comedy pilot starring Tim Robinson who co-wrote it with his writing partner Zach Kanin.
The pickup for The Chair Company, which Robinson and Kanin executive produce with Adam McKay and Todd Schulman, follows the series order earlier this week for HBO’s other 2024 comedy pilot, an untitled ensemble half-hour written, executive produced by and starring Rachel Sennott, making for a 2-for-2 pilot-to-series batting average.
With HBO also recently handing a straight-to-series order to a Bill Lawrence-Matt Tarses comedy starring Steve Carell, this marks the largest contingent of new comedy series at the premium network in years as it has ramped up half-hour development in light of stalwarts Curb Your Enthusiasm and Barry coming to an end and the pending departure of Somebody, Somewhere.

Robinson writes, stars in, and executive produces the half-hour show, which was picked up by HBO. The official logline reads: “After an embarrassing incident at work, a man named William Ronald Trosper (Robinson) finds himself investigating a far-reaching conspiracy.”
Lake Bell, Sophia Lillis, Will Price, Joseph Tudisco, and Lou Diamond Phillips co-star.
“With an imprint only Tim and Zach can have on a character, William Ronald Trosper follows in the strong tradition of HBO comedy leads,” Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO & Max Comedy Programming, said. “I couldn’t be happier to announce the pickup of this wildly enjoyable show.”

How does one become one of the most celebrated and commercially successful comedy multi-hyphenates of all time? Surely not by dropping out of college before receiving their bachelor’s degree and joining an improv comedy group, right?
Wrong. Thus was the journey for Adam McKay, the immensely talented and successful director, writer, and producer behind such classics as ‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,’ ‘Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,’ ‘Step Brothers,’ ‘The Other Guys,’ ‘The Big Short,’ and ‘Vice.’ McKay has had a fascinating and very versatile career, going from directing Will Ferrell at his absolute best, making people’s stomachs hurt from laughing too hard, to tackling academy-award nominated films revolving around climate change, corrupt politicians, and the recession of 2008. With his long hair, sunglasses and bellbottoms, Hal Ashby was the epitome of the 1970s flower child, even though he was a decade older than most of the filmmakers working at the time. Though his flame burned brightly and briefly, he left behind a series of classics that signified the nose-thumbing, countercultural attitude of the era, with a bit of humanism and heart thrown in for good measure. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born on September 2, 1929 in Utah, Ashby ambled around before becoming an apprentice editor for Robert Swink, working for Hollywood legends William Wyler and George Stevens. He moved up the ranks to become an editor for Norman Jewison, with whom he shared a fraternal and professional relationship. They cut five films together, including “The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!” (1966), which earned him his first Oscar nomination,...

A story that doesn’t seem fresh on paper — and one previously explored in Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” — may be a barrier to entry for some audiences. But Swiss director Tim Fehlbaum’s “September 5,” which takes audiences inside the airtight, under-air-conditioned ABC News control room as terrorists commandeered the 1972 Summer Olympics mere yards away, is a gripping, singular depiction that stands on its own merits.
In a tight 94 minutes, Fehlbaum pivots from the mayhem outside and solely toward the handful of sports broadcasters forced to improvise as eight Palestinian militants, known as Black September, took the Israeli Olympic team hostage. All 11 hostages were killed. Though going into this movie with that historical perspective doesn’t impede the tension onscreen — even if “September 5’s” psychological inquiry into the crisis and how it reshaped TV news, and how that very broadcast coverage may have spurred a nightmare to its worst possible horizon,...

John Cena says he understands why David Zaslav decided to cancel the release of Coyote vs. Acme after its completion, a corporate line-toeing that aligns with his personal philosophy of, “You can’t see me.”
In late 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Zaslav shelved the half-animated, half-live-action Looney Tunes movie about a hapless antagonist’s quest for justice after suffering decades of misfortune thanks to ineffective products purchased from the Acme corporation. Coyote vs. Acme, which began development long before Zaslav’s Discovery merged with WarnerMedia in 2022, was a labor of love that brought together such comedic talents as Adam McKay, James Gunn, Will Forte and Cena in an homage to the characters and cartoons that have enriched so many childhoods for the better part of the last century.

Update: Five defendants have been charged concerning the ketamine-related death of Matthew Perry. The five individuals include a live-in assistant, two doctors, and a woman known as the “Ketamine Queen.” According to U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada, the five are associated with a “broad underground criminal network” that provided Perry and others with ketamine. Estrada says the group “took advantage of Mr. Perry’s addiction issues to enrich themselves.”
The individuals charged include Jasveen Sangha, 41, a.k.a. “The Ketamine Queen,” of North Hollywood; Dr. Salvador Plasencia, 42, a.k.a. “Dr. P,” of Santa Monica; and Eric Fleming, 54, of Hawthorne. On August 8, Fleming pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and one count of distribution of ketamine, resulting in death, admitting to distributing the ketamine that killed Perry.
Other defendants arrested include Kenneth Iwamasa, 59, of Toluca Lake, Perry’s live-in assistant, who allegedly conspired with Sangha, Fleming,...

Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Dead Snow, Violent Night) is headed into the open waters for a shark attack horror movie that’s been newly titled Beneath the Storm, and we’ve learned that it’s swimming our way next year.
Columbia Pictures will release Beneath the Storm in theaters August 1, 2025.
Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play), Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2) and Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place: Part II) star in Beneath the Storm, produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.
Plot details, at this time, are still under wraps. Stay tuned for more.
Wirkola’s project is one of many new shark attack movies in the works, with Lizzy Greene starring in High Tide and Sean Byrne directing Dangerous Animals, to name just a couple.
The prospect of a shark attack movie directed by Tommy Wirkola is particularly exciting, however, as Wirkola’s movies are always wildly entertaining and extremely bloody.

Tommy Wirkola’s shark film has a flashy new title and a release date. More on Beneath The Storm below.
We first heard of Tommy Wirkola’s shark film last May when we reported that Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor was in talks to join the then-untitled film.
That film now has a title: Beneath The Storm. Deadline also reports that the film is heading to US cinemas on 1st August next year, courtesy of Sony Pictures. There’s no word on a UK release but we’re sure it’ll show up on a release schedule eventually.
In May, the plot details were kept under wraps and unfortunately that hasn’t changed. All we know is that the film is directed by Wirkola, stars Dynevor and it’ll have sharks. It’s not much to go on, but fans of films like Deep Blue Sea and The Shallows have plenty to get excited about here.

Kathryn Hahn has always been more than happy to take on a supporting role. Her comedic career blossomed in the early 2000s with bit parts in Adam McKay films like “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” and “Step Brothers,” and she also garnered dramatic bonafides with Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road” and M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Visit.” Most recently, she’s helped fill out ensembles in live-action projects like “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and animated ones such as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” As her career has developed in the last decade, so too has her center-stage appeal, with roles in HBO’s “Mrs. Fletcher” and Tamara Jenkins’ “Private Life” placing her in lead position. Now, it seems, Marvel is taking notice as they’ve decided to spin her side character from “WandaVision” off into her own Disney+ show with “Agatha All Along.”

Steve Carell first came to prominence as a correspondent on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” appearing as a regular cast member from 1999 to 2005. He left the nightly news satire to play bumbling boss Michael Scott in “The Office,” a role which brought him six Emmy nominations as Best Comedy Actor and a Golden Globe win in 2006.
After supporting roles in such films as “Bruce Almighty” (2003), “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” (2004), “Melinda and Melinda” (2004), and “Bewitched” (2005), Carell moved into leading man status playing a middle-aged man seeking to have sex for the first time in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” (2005). The Boys is probably one of the most gory and violent series out there. What’s one more franchise that is gory, disgusting, and, foul-mouthed? Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool.
A still from The Boys | Amazon MGM Studios
The similarities between the two franchises are many. However, one thing that the world can agree upon is that both franchises feature anti-heroes going up against the good/bad guys, foul language, nudity, and, very many gore scenes. Back in 2008, however, this was not what people were ready for.

When The Boys premiered in 2019, the Amazon original dealt an immediately impressionable blow to the audiences with its shocking episode 1 plot twist ending. The road to the finale ever since has been paved with bloody fights, grisly deaths, and disturbing s-x scenes.
The Boys – Billy Butcher vs Homelander [Credit: Prime Video]
But after sitting through four diabolical seasons of the twisted superhero series, one thing becomes quite clear to the fans of The Boys, and that is, shock value has taken precedence over quality storytelling as far as the writers’ room is concerned. The fact, however, may not necessarily be a bad one, especially in the current age of sensitized media and the ubiquitous Cancel Culture (more on that later).

The Boys adult superhero comic book series is one of the most successful source materials that has been adapted into a live-action series. Originally created by Garth Ennis, the saga has easily cemented itself as one of the strongest fan-favorite comic book storylines of all time. So much so that it was even going to have its own live-action movie as well.

This would have taken place under the guidance and supervision of Ennis. However, its success wouldn’t have been guaranteed to reach the same heights as the smash hit television series due to one too many reasons. For one, it just may have led to Ennis sacrificing some major satirical elements of his blockbuster storyline just to get the movie greenlit.

We all know that San Diego comes from the German for whale’s vagina, but did you know that a lot of the banter between Ron Burgundy and co-anchor Veronica Corningstone was off the cuff? As much as TV anchors need their scripts to deliver the news, Will Ferrell and Christina Applegate were encouraged to venture far off of theirs when making 2004’s Anchorman.
Ferrell and Applegate recently got together on the latter and Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s joint podcast, MeSsy (via EW), to reflect on their time filming Anchorman, particularly how director Adam McKay would make frantic calls from behind the camera. As Ferrell put it, “A lot of that stuff, Christina and I going back and forth insulting each other, some of that was scripted, but so much of that was like, ‘Just keep going!’ Adam just wouldn’t yell cut, so you just had to keep going. At...
