Maria Bello (Beef) is set as a series regular opposite Holt McCallany in the new Netflix family drama series The Waterfront, written and executive produced by Kevin Williamson.
Bello will play Mae Buckley, a complex woman who’s married to Harlan (McCallany) and the mother of their two children. After her husband took a step back from the family business, together with their son, she has been running the fishery in very questionable ways in a desperate attempt to save the family.
Williamson and Ben Fast executive produce for Outerbanks Entertainment. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where Williamson is under an overall deal, is the studio.
Bello won the Critics Choice Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress this year for her role in Beef. Her film works includes The History of Violence and The Cooler. She’ll next be seen in the French/English language film Hell in Paradise.

Kevin Williamson is keeping busy like it’s 1998! Best known for writing Scream, Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Faculty, producing Halloween H20 (while doing uncredited work on the script), and creating Dawson’s Creek, Williamson is currently gearing up to direct his second feature film, Scream 7. Back in February, we heard that he and his producer banner, Outerbanks Entertainment, were developing four major projects as part of an overall deal with Universal Television. One of those TV series projects, a crime drama called The Waterfront, was picked up by the Netflix streaming service back in May. Now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Holt McCallany (The Iron Claw) and Maria Bello (A History of Violence) are set to star in that series!

Netflix and Kevin Williamson’s drama series The Waterfront is adding to its cast.
Maria Bello, an Emmy nominee for the streamer’s Beef, will star opposite Holt McCallany in the series. She’ll play the matriarch of a family that runs a “crumbling fishing empire” in North Carolina. Netflix announced the series in May at its upfront presentation to advertisers.
The Waterfront marks a return to North Carolina for Dawson’s Creek creator Williamson, who shot his breakout series (though it was set in Massachusetts) in Wilmington.
The logline for The Waterfront reads, “Inspired by true events, The Waterfront dives into the flawed Buckley family as their attempts to retain control of their crumbling North Carolina fishing empire drive them to increasingly dangerous means to keep themselves afloat.”
Bello will play Mae Buckley, who has been running the family business with her son after her husband, Harlan (McCallany), took a step back.

It can be tough to catch the magic of unease that “Longlegs” has laid on people during and after seeing the film.
Since seeing the latest Oz Perkins horror film, many have been clamoring to recapture that magic. Luckily there are plenty of TV shows that balance the supernatural with the everyday when it comes to hunting and tracking down a serial killer — and worse.
These are the seven TV shows you should check out once you see “Longlegs” and are needing to extend that pit-in-your-stomach feeling.

A legal thriller series, the 61st Street TV show stars Mark O’Brien, Courtney B. Vance, Aunjanue Ellis, Andrene Ward-Hammond, Mark O'Brien, Holt McCallany, Bentley Green, and Jerod Haynes. The story is set in the dark heart of the infamous Chicago criminal justice system. After Officer Logan (O’Brien) kills an innocent man, attorney Franklin Roberts (Vance) agrees to represent him in hopes of putting Logan’s corrupt department on trial. Franklin Roberts has another major case in the second season of the 61st Street TV show on The CW. Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are joined by Stephen Oyoung for Mission: Impossible 8, which continues to film.
The production of Mission: Impossible 8 feels like it’s been going on for a very long time now. In part, in fairness, because it started shooting back to back with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, which landed in cinemas all the way back in the summer of 2023.
Christopher McQuarrie has written and directed the film, which of course is being led by Tom Cruise. Production has been held up by, amongst other things, a global pandemic, a writers’ strike, an actor’s strike, and a malfunctioning submarine. As such the film continues to shoot, and over two years since film began, the cast is still expanding.
Enter stage left Stephen Oyoung, who’s popped up last week in cinemas in Twisters. He’s been added to the Mission: Impossible 8 ensemble in an undisclosed role,...

Max announced on Friday that the acclaimed wrestling drama The Iron Claw from Cannes and Sundance prize-winning filmmaker Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) will begin streaming exclusively on the platform through its output deal with distributor A24 on May 10.
Based on a true story, The Iron Claw follows the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day. The film specifically hones in on the supposed “Von Erich curse,” which would see one Von Erich brother after another meet their untimely end, leaving just Kevin Von Erich (Zac Efron) left.
Written and directed by Durkin, the film also stars Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany, Maura Tierney and Lily James, among others. A24 financed the pic alongside Access Entertainment and BBC Films. In addition to A24, producers included Tessa Ross,...

Get your tissues ready: “The Iron Claw” will be available to stream on Max on May 10.
The A24 biographical sports drama debuted in theaters on Dec. 22 and received critical acclaim. Starring Zac Efron, Sean Durkin’s latest feature is based on the Von Erich wrestling dynasty, who suffered a series of tragic deaths in the family. Efron plays Kevin Von Erich, alongside Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich and Holt McCallany as patriarch Fritz Von Erich. Lily James plays Kevin’s wife Pam Adkisson and Maura Tierney plays matriarch Doris Von Erich.
Efron famously packed on pounds of muscle to portray the professional wrestler. “That necessity to be perfect — it became an obsession,” he told Variety for his December cover story. “It was a singular focus for months. And your life goes out the window during prep.

The breakout star of Love Lies Bleeding, Katy O’Brian, is also seeing her fair share of franchise roles. Prior to her latest A24 movie, O’Brian has played parts in projects for Disney like The Mandalorian and Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She will also be seen in the upcoming Twisters, where she says, “We filmed a tornado movie during tornado season in Tornado Alley.” She would reveal that her character is “a little sillier” than she has been used to, but she won’t go as far as to call it a comic relief role. “I don’t want to say comedic role, and then everyone’s like, ‘She wasn’t funny.’ We’ll say it’s silly and fun.”

As last year’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (which has dropped the “Part One” subtitle since it hit home video) wrapped up, we saw that Tom Cruise’s Imf agent lead character Ethan Hunt would live to run another day – and pictures from the set of Mission: Impossible 8 (which won’t be called Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two after all) show him doing just that! Cruise running is a big part of these movies and his overall career, so it’s nice to see that Mission: Impossible 8 will indeed have him moving across the screen as fast as his legs can carry him. There’s even some video from the set as well, if you want to see this run in action.

Five years have gone by since Tom Cruise announced that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to two more Mission: Impossible movies, with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) writer/director Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm. At one point, we thought these movies were going to carry the titles Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two… but Paramount is backtracking from that decision. After Dead Reckoning Part One underwhelmed at the box office when it was released last year, the studio has dropped Part One from the subtitle and has let it be known that the next film, which is still in production, will have a different title. A decision they really should have made before releasing the first half of the story. At least we’re still getting the second half of the story, with the...

One of the most acclaimed movies of 2023 is coming home: A24 has announced that "The Iron Claw" will be available on Blu-ray and DVD next month. But for those who aren't committed to picking up a physical copy of the film, it is also available to rent on VOD from a variety of digital retailers right now. So there are plenty of options, with even more on the way in the coming months (we'll get to that in a moment).
A24's wrestling drama about the Von Erichs "The Iron Claw" (read /Film's review here) is currently available to rent from retailers such as Apple TV+, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube, among others. It is priced at $19.99 for a 48-hour rental, which is the standard premium VOD price that studios began running with a few years ago. That price typically drops several weeks after the initial Digital release date.

Stars: Holt McCallany, Harris Dickinson, Jeremy Allen White, Stanley Simons, Zac Efron, Maura Tierney, Lily James | Written and Directed by Sean Durkin
For his third film, writer/director Sean Durkin delivers a feature based on the tragic true story of the Von Erich family. Believing that he was denied the chance to become a wrestling champion, the embittered Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany) has driven his sons to take that chance and become victorious. Set across the 1980s, The Iron Claw captures the familial triumphs and the tragedies which befell them inside and outside the ring.
As the Von Erich’s driving force, whether they like it or not, McCallany exceptionally brings alive the domineering father who uses his sons to achieve his unfulfilled dreams. There is never a threat of the character becoming cartoonish, as the verbally abusive figure proclaims his manipulations as being for the family’s good.

For my money, The Iron Claw was one of the best films of 2023. Many JoBlo readers seemed to agree, with our review for the movie getting loads of clicks, and so far, it seems to be doing quite well in our annual Golden Schmoes awards. It also did quite well at the domestic box office, grossing about $35 million, which is significantly more than other, more hyped awards contenders like Poor Things, American Fiction, and The Holdovers. Even still, it was mostly shut out of the main awards conversation despite career-best work from star Zac Efron, who plays the last surviving Von Erich brother, Kevin.
So, if you happened to miss The Iron Claw in theatres, now’s your chance to catch up with director Sean Durkin’s take on the infamous “Curse of the Von Erichs” with it making its VOD debut today. You can get it through whatever streamer you like the most,...

A career-best turn from Zac Efron, plus a tide of true-life triumph and tragedy, power director Sean Durkin’s bone-crunching drama
“There’s nothing fake about what we do,” says wrestler Kevin Von Erich. He’s fielding a coy question from flirtatious fan (and girlfriend in waiting) Pam (Lily James), and he fervently believes what he’s saying. She, reasonably, asks him how anyone can call themselves a “world champion” wrestler when so much of what plays out in the ring is “pre-arranged”. Kevin argues that the performance is the point; that the difference between a Speedo-clad lunk sweating it out on the provincial circuit and a bona fide champion boils down to self-belief and the quality of the show that they put on for the audience.
And this is a central idea in writer-director Sean Durkin’s powerful third film, a factually based account of the larger-than-real-life Von Erich wrestling dynasty,...

Exclusive Updated: Re-start of production has been postponed on season 3 of Foundation, the Apple TV+ saga that’s based on Isaac Asimov’s trilogy.
Issues with budgeting and physical production/ prompted the delay of filming in Prague and Poland, which had been scheduled to begin this month, sources tell Deadline. Cast and crew who had already convened for the shoot were told to return home while production issues are sorted out, with the budget brought down. No new start date has been set.
This is the second time Season 3 production has been paused on the series that stars Jared Harris and Lee Pace and chronicles the saga of The Foundation, a band of exiles who discover that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it. According to sources, the sci-fi drama filmed for several weeks in spring 2023 before shutting down due to the strike.
