She is the author of many novels and short story collections, including Mary Reilly, Italian Fever, The Great Divorce, and Property, which won the 2003 Orange Prize for fiction.
She has taught writing and literature at colleges and universities
including The University of New Orleans, Mount Holyoke College, The
University of Alabama, and Sarah Lawrence College.
